Description

Your financial figures are in Excel or in your accounting package, but you want to get more out of them than separate overviews. In this Financial Analysis with Power BI course you learn how to turn financial data into interactive dashboards and clear reports without any programming knowledge.

On the first day you work with Power BI sample files and practice data. You import data from Excel, CSV and accounting packages, clean it up with Power Query and build financial tables around financial year, month and cost centres. You will also be introduced to simple DAX formulas and your first visualisations.

The second day focuses on financial analysis and reporting. You calculate KPIs such as EBITDA, margin, cash flow and ROI, carry out variance and trend analyses, and build interactive dashboards with drill-through and slicers. Finally, you work on your own practical case and are given tools to present your insights convincingly to management.

You receive reference material, the checklist 'Your first financial dashboard' and a set of commonly used templates for financial dashboards. The course is classroom-based and includes plenty of practical assignments, so that you get to grips with Power BI straight away.

Day 1. The basics of Power BI for financial data

  • Exploring Power BI: environment, components and data model
  • Importing data from Excel, CSV and your accounting package
  • Cleaning and transforming data with Power Query
  • Building financial tables: financial year, month and cost centres
  • Simple DAX formulas for totals, averages and growth percentages
  • Building your first dashboards with tables, bar charts and maps

Day 2. Financial analysis and reporting

  • Calculating KPIs: EBITDA, margin, cash flow and ROI
  • Variance analyses: budget versus actuals
  • Trend analyses and moving averages
  • Interactive dashboards with drill-through and slicers
  • Layout and storytelling: how do you present data to management?
  • Practice case: build your own financial dashboard

Result

After this course you turn financial data from Excel, CSV or your accounting package into clear reports with Power BI in no time. You import and structure your data, clean it up with Power Query and build financial tables around financial year, month and cost centres.

Using DAX formulas you calculate KPIs such as EBITDA, margin, cash flow and ROI, and visualise profit, liquidity and other key figures in no time. Variance analyses (budget versus actuals), trend analyses and moving averages will no longer be a mystery afterwards.

You know how to build interactive dashboards with drill-through and slicers, and how to present them in an understandable way to management. You automate periodic reports, so that you can support financial decisions with visual insights. You go home with your own financial dashboard that you can build on straight away.

A good knowledge of Microsoft Excel is important. Experience with Power BI is useful, but not a requirement. You do not need any programming knowledge.

Teaching method

You follow this course in a classroom setting in a small group, so that you receive plenty of personal attention from an experienced trainer with a background in finance. The emphasis is on doing it yourself: following a clear step-by-step plan, you work with Power BI sample files and realistic practice data from the financial world.

Theory and practice alternate throughout. After each explanation you get straight to work on exercises, so that you really get to grips with Power BI. On day 2 you build your own financial dashboard during a practical case, which you can continue to use after the course.

You receive a reference guide, the checklist 'Your first financial dashboard' and a set of commonly used templates for financial dashboards. Optionally, you get access to our recorded video explanations so you can review parts at your own pace later on. Afterwards, you receive a certificate of participation.

Prior knowledge

You are comfortable with Excel. Experience with Power BI is useful, but not a must. You do not need any programming knowledge.

Can I cancel free of charge?

Yes. Up to four weeks before the first day of the course you can cancel free of charge, without giving a reason. You then receive a credit note or, if you have already paid, a refund. If you cancel later, you pay part of the course fee: 25% between four and two weeks before the start, 75% in the two weeks before it and 100% in the final week. Moving to another start date is free of charge up to two weeks before the start, after that 50%. Sending a colleague in your place is always possible. Read the cancellation terms.

How does this course compare with a Power BI course for data analysts or marketers?
The Financial Analysis with Power BI course focuses entirely on financial data and reporting. General Power BI courses cover Power BI broadly, with examples from marketing, sales or operations. In this course you work on cases involving financial years, cost centres, budget versus actuals, EBITDA, margin, cash flow and ROI. The DAX formulas and data models have also been chosen to reflect what a finance professional encounters in practice. You will also receive templates for financial dashboards and the checklist 'Your first financial dashboard'. Choose a general Power BI course if you mainly analyse commercial or operational data. Choose this course if you work as a controller, accountant or finance employee and want to build reports, KPIs and management dashboards around financial figures. What follow-up steps can I take after this course if I want to specialise further in Power BI for finance?
After the Financial Analysis with Power BI course there are four logical directions for going deeper, depending on where you want to grow. Would you like to go further into the technical side? Then choose Power BI Advanced, focusing on DAX in more depth and performance optimisation. Do you work a lot with forecasts and planning? Then Power BI for Forecasting & Budgeting is a better fit. If you want to take the step towards predictive analysis, for example adding Python or R, then Finance meets Data Science is a good follow-up choice. If your interest lies more in the presentation and usability of reports, choose Dashboard Design & UX for financial reporting. The basic course lays the foundations; the follow-up courses build on them. You do not have to take them all. Choose on the basis of your role and the questions that arise in your own practice.
How soon after the Financial Analysis with Power BI course can I actually deliver a dashboard at work?
You go home with your own working dashboard that you can develop further. That is deliberate: in the practice case on day 2 you start from your own financial context, so you don't have to start from scratch back at the office. In practice this produces the following rhythm: in the first week after the course you can import your own data via Power Query and deliver a basic report with KPIs such as margin, EBITDA and cash flow. For variance analyses (budget versus actuals) and interactive elements such as drill-through and slicers, allow for two to four weeks of additional practice. A full management dashboard with a storytelling layer takes longer, depending on how clean your source systems are. The reference material and the checklist 'Your first financial dashboard' will help you along the way.
Can I use my own financial data from our accounting package during the course, or do I only work with practice files?
During the course you will mainly work with Power BI sample files and practice data supplied by Learnit. That is a deliberate choice: everyone works with the same dataset, so that the trainer can explain step by step how to import data, clean it up with Power Query and apply DAX formulas. On day 2 you build your own financial dashboard in a practice case. Would you like to work with your own figures from Excel, CSV or an accounting package? That is often possible in consultation with the trainer during the hands-on moments, provided you can export the data securely beforehand. For a full set-up based on your own company data, an in-company course is usually more sensible than a classroom course. You will, however, go home after the course with a dashboard you can build on further.
Which DAX formulas and KPIs will I actually learn to calculate during this course?
On day 1 you start with simple DAX formulas for totals, averages and growth percentages. On day 2 you move on to financial KPIs: EBITDA, margin, cash flow and ROI. You will also build variance analyses (budget versus actuals), trend analyses and moving averages. In addition, you will work with drill-through and slicers to make dashboards interactive. The course focuses on applied DAX for finance, not on the language as a whole. For more in-depth DAX topics such as time intelligence, CALCULATE patterns or performance optimisation, you can take the follow-up Power BI Advanced course. In this course you therefore lay the foundation you need to automate standard financial reporting, including a practice case in which you build your own financial dashboard.
