Want to set up, steer and complete projects successfully? During the Project Management course you get a grip on planning, budget and team roles. You learn to work through all the phases of a project and to avoid the pitfalls, so that you bring every project to a successful conclusion with confidence.

Description

In this Project Management course you learn how to set up and guide a project from start to finish using the working in projects method. You go through all the phases of a project, from definition through to completion, and you get a grip on the structure needed to achieve a predetermined goal within time and budget.

You work on skills to keep an overview of and control over the planning, allocate tasks and take the lead. You also pay attention to the roles of everyone involved, to communication within the project team and to finances and risk management. Common pitfalls and setbacks are covered, so that you know how to anticipate them.

The course alternates theory with practical cases and discussions in which you link what you have learned directly to your own working situation. The course material includes a syllabus with step-by-step plans, checklists and overviews that you can continue to use alongside your work.

Topics

  • The entire project cycle
  • Setting up the project and the organisation around it
  • Tasks, people and planning
  • Breaking projects down, phasing and planning them
  • Managing and steering projects professionally
  • Leading in projects
  • Communicating within projects, including remotely and in hybrid teams
  • Working as part of a team
  • Working to deadlines
  • Evaluating results
  • Pitfalls and risks

Result

After this course you will know how to set up and manage a project from start to finish. You will work through all the project phases independently, from definition to completion, and keep control of planning, budget and risks.

You will recognise the various roles within a project and know how to manage and communicate with the staff involved. You will be able to draw up a project plan, schedule and risk analysis, and you will spot pitfalls in time.

With the practical checklists and overviews from the course material you can get started straight away in your own working situation as a project leader or project team member.

Target audience

This course is particularly suitable for (aspiring) project leaders and project managers, and for employees who carry out project management tasks within profit and non-profit organisations.

Teaching method

During this course you alternate theory with discussions about its application in your own working situation and short practical cases. This way you apply the theory covered directly to recognisable situations. The link back to your own practice is central, because that gives you the grounding to put what you have learned to use straight away in your own environment.

The course material contains many practical overviews and checklists that you can keep using alongside your day-to-day work.

Prior knowledge

No specific prior knowledge is required for this course. Do you already have experience with projects or do you work in a team that works on a project basis? Then you will recognise many situations more quickly, but that is certainly not necessary.

  • "The Project Management course I attended was extremely good: it was genuine training in working on a project basis and in setting up, controlling and managing projects. Because of the small number of participants, everyone had the opportunity to raise their practical questions and have them explained. What was covered in the course can be applied directly by me in practice. In short, this is not a course but training as training should be."

    A. Sjauw, Gemeente Almere - Project Management

  • “Enjoyable and interesting course. The material is not drummed into you but is presented in the right doses. The practical assignments were fun to do. I also thought it was good that the class is capped at 4 participants, which makes the most of the interaction between trainer and participant. That is what you come for, after all...!”

M.G. Zonneveld, Marco Zonneveld- Project Management
    Rating 7.7
  • “A substantively strong and practice-oriented course in which all the points I raised beforehand were covered in detail. The alternation between theory and practice was pleasant and immediately applicable. Thanks to Hans's extensive practical experience, I picked up valuable tips and learned to look at everyday work challenges in a different way. The course was excellently run, well organised and the contact was pleasant. As an addition, I would like to see soft skills practised through role-play as well.”

    N. Smit - Retail Solutions- Project Management
    Rating 8.4
  • “The course provides both a sound theoretical basis and its practical application. This is done through a well-structured treatment of the material combined with some case studies to put it into practice. Ultimately you want the subject matter to become second nature, rather than a trick you have learned. They have found a good method for that. The small group size is also very pleasant. Plenty of room for personal questions.”

    J. de Jonge- Project Management
    Rating 9.0
  • “I have rarely attended a course that was so engaging from the very first moment. Very clear, with plenty of tools to apply straight away. Recommended for beginning and experienced project leaders alike.”

W.H. Zoeten, Danielson Europe- Project Management
    Rating 8.6
  • "The Project Management course works perfectly well online: it gives a lot of insight into the process theories and methods. But it also leaves plenty of room to bring in your own practical questions and cases and discuss them with the group, which is why this course remained interesting throughout. The trainer has a great deal of practical experience and combined that well with the theory."

    - Project Management
  • “A very complete course on how to approach projects. A good basis to get started with. Plenty of practical examples are used and the trainer tries to apply the material to your own working environment. It is not just theory; every day there are one or two practical assignments. You are in a small group, so there is a lot of personal attention. The participants come from a wide range of sectors, so the material is looked at from different perspectives, which is very enjoyable. All in all, recommended!”

My new knowledge is not only immediately applicable, but also a sound basis for a follow-up course."

    J. de Heij, Picturae- Project Management
    Rating 8.8
  • "Excellent training course, excellent venue (Zwolle) and the trainer manages to discuss the core aspects of project management clearly in 3 days, but above all in an informal way. Theory and practice are well alternated through individual as well as group assignments. The group consisted of 3 participants, so you get a lot of personal attention. In addition, we came from completely different organisations, so you pick up a range of experiences. I am very satisfied with having taken this course!"

    G. Keulen, SRAM Europe Sales & Services BV- Project Management
    Rating 8.3
  • “For project leaders/project managers who are just starting out, this is an extremely useful course. Working in phases and in a structured way is central to it. The tricks of the trade for working on a project basis are all covered. For more experienced PLs/PMs it is also a useful course as a refresher or as confirmation (or adjustment) of the working methods they already have in place.”

Frequently asked questions

During the Project Management course you work through the complete project cycle: from definition and planning to execution, control and evaluation. You learn to divide projects into phases, allocate tasks, monitor deadlines and assess risks. Leadership, communication within projects and working together as a team are also covered. You take away practical checklists and tools that you can apply directly in your own work.

The Project Management course is suitable for (prospective) project leaders, project managers and staff who carry out project management tasks. Both profit and non-profit organisations are welcome. No prior knowledge is required, so you can join without any previous experience. During this classroom course you learn to manage projects successfully from definition through to completion.

No, no prior knowledge is required for the Project Management course. You can start straight away, whatever your background or work experience. The course begins with the basics of working on a project basis and builds up step by step to the complete project cycle. It is useful if you deal with projects in your work, so that you can apply what you have learnt immediately during the practical cases.

With the Project Management course you receive an extensive syllabus containing a step-by-step plan for setting up a project, practical checklists and cases. You also receive tools for drawing up your own project plan, risk analysis and schedule. This material can be applied directly alongside your own work, so that you can put what you have learned into practice straight away.

The Project Management course combines theory with discussions and short practical cases. In a classroom setting you work on assignments that you link directly to your own working situation. As a result, you take concrete material back to your workplace. The course material contains checklists, overviews and tools for project plans, risk analyses and schedules, among other things, which you can continue to use alongside your day-to-day work.

Learnit's Project Management course is method-independent and focuses on working in projects in practice: setting up, phasing, planning and controlling projects. You learn to keep an overview of planning, finances, risks and the roles of those involved. The course lasts and, classroom-based. Choose this option if you lead projects or work in projects and are looking for direct applicability, without an exam or certification requirements. A PRINCE2 or PMP route, by contrast, focuses on a specific methodology with an exam, a longer lead time and a higher investment. If you do not need a formal certificate but do want practical tools (checklists, project plan, risk analysis, planning tools) that you can apply straight away in your own working situation, this course is the better fit. No prior knowledge is required.

Learnit's Project Management course is method-neutral and teaches you to work on a project basis using the project cycle: definition, design, preparation, delivery and aftercare. You practise with phasing, planning, risk analysis, finances, team roles and communication. The course takes and, classroom-based. A PRINCE2 Foundation course focuses on one specific method with a fixed vocabulary and concludes with a certification exam. Choose the Learnit course if you are looking for practical skills to set up and steer projects in your own organisation straight away, without being tied to one framework. Choose PRINCE2 if your employer or client explicitly asks for that certification.

You can apply what you have learnt directly to a project that is already under way. The course is structured around working on a project basis: definition, design, preparation, delivery and closure. During the course you continually relate the theory back to your own working situation through discussions and short cases. If your project is already in the delivery phase, you can immediately put tools such as risk analysis, planning techniques and checklists to work to get a grip on scope, lead time and budget. For a project that has yet to start, you use the step-by-step plan from the syllabus to draw up a project plan. The overviews and checklists provided are deliberately practical, so that you can use them alongside your day-to-day work. Even if you are not a formal project manager.

The Project Management course focuses on setting up, steering and controlling projects in full. You learn the complete project cycle, finances, risks, leading in projects and monitoring planning and deadlines. This suits (future) project leaders and project managers who bear final responsibility for a project. A Project-Based Working course is generally shorter and aimed at employees who take part in projects or carry out sub-tasks. They mainly learn to understand the method and to fulfil their own role within a project. Not sure which to choose? Choose Project Management if you are going to lead, plan and steer projects yourself. Choose Project-Based Working if you mainly want to take part effectively in other people's projects. The Project Management course at Learnit is classroom-based.

The Project Management course at Learnit is based on working in projects with clear phases: definition, design, preparation, realisation and aftercare. That structure combines well with agile working methods used within a phase. In practice you often see the overall planning, scope and budget being managed at phase level, while realisation takes place in sprints. During the course you discuss how to manage phase transitions, deadlines and risks, even when teams work iteratively. You learn how to set up roles, communication and management information, so that a client keeps a grip on results and lead time. Pure Scrum ceremonies and roles are not covered; a separate Scrum course is more suitable for that. For project leaders in a hybrid environment, the course mainly provides the framework to let both worlds function alongside each other.

Yes, that distinction is explicitly covered. Working on a project basis pays off when an assignment has a clearly defined goal, a fixed deadline, its own budget and temporary collaboration between people from different disciplines. Routine tasks, ongoing management or work without an end result belong in the line organisation, not in a project. In the Project Management course (classroom-based) you learn to make this assessment via the definition phase: objective, scope, stakeholders, preconditions and risks. You receive checklists with which you can test an assignment before drawing up a project plan. This prevents you from setting up unnecessary overhead for small jobs, or steering too lightly on something that is in fact a full-fledged project. Particularly useful if you have to argue within your own organisation why something is or is not a project.
