What prior knowledge do I need for the IPMA-C course?

For the IPMA-C course you need no compulsory prior education, but you do need relevant work experience. The course is intended for project managers or project leaders at the start of their career who already have experience of running projects and want to move on to more complex ones. A completed IPMA-D is not required. During the course you are fully prepared for the official IPMA-C exam set by IPMA Certificering Nederland.

Is the IPMA-C course good preparation for the official IPMA-C exam?

Yes, the IPMA-C course prepares you specifically for the official exam of IPMA Certificering Nederland. On day 5 you receive exam training in which you revise the material and practise with exam questions. All the competences tested in the exam are covered: project preparation, project set-up, project control and project closure. You sit the exam itself separately at IPMA.

Who is the IPMA-C course intended for and which subjects are covered?

The IPMA-C course is intended for project managers and project leaders at the start of their career who want to progress and learn to manage complex projects. In you cover project preparation, project set-up and execution, project control and project closure. Think of risk management, planning techniques, control factors (time, money, quality, information, organisation), earned value management, team management and financial project reporting. Is the IPMA-C course taught in a classroom or also online?

IPMA-C is a level higher and is aimed at project managers who lead complex projects independently, manage a project team and steer on time, money, quality, information and organisation. How will I know whether, after the IPMA-C course, I am really ready to lead a complex project on my own, or will I still need experience or guidance afterwards?

The IPMA-C course gives you the framework for managing complex projects: you learn project phasing, risk management, earned value management, control of time, money, quality, information and organisation, and how to manage a project team. That is the theoretical and methodical basis. Whether you will then immediately lead a complex project independently depends on your practical experience. IPMA-C is designed for project managers and project leaders with some work experience who want to progress to more complex projects. Compare it to a driving licence: you master the rules and techniques, but you build up routine in practice. Many participants apply the material directly to a current project. If you still have little experience, IPMA-D is a more logical first step. including exam preparation.

What will I learn in the IPMA-C course that I would not get from a book or self-study?

Self-study helps you understand the IPMA-C theory, but the course adds three things you will not find in a book. First: practising with your own project case. You apply topics such as risk management, earned value management and phasing directly to a project you are actually working on. Second: feedback from an experienced trainer and from fellow participants with comparable challenges, particularly on the behavioural competences such as negotiating, leadership and conflict handling. Those are difficult to learn from a book. Third: targeted exam training on day 5, including recognising how questions are phrased. In the classroom course you systematically work through all the competences that IPMA-C tests, instead of only the parts you are already strong in.
