Target audience

The IPMA-C course has been developed for project managers who are just starting out, or project leaders who want to progress to project manager and learn to control complex projects.

Teaching method

During the IPMA-C course you work in a small group together with an experienced trainer. We alternate the theory with practical assignments, examples from your own projects and practice questions in line with the IPMA-C exam.

You will work actively with cases, group discussions and reflection on your own role as a project manager. In this way you build up your helicopter view step by step, along with the confidence to steer complex projects.

You will receive course materials that you can also use as a reference work after the course. Afterwards you will receive a certificate of participation and you will be well prepared for the official IPMA-C exam.

Prior knowledge

You have some experience as a project leader or project manager and want to move on to managing more complex projects. A completed IPMA-D is a good basis, but not a requirement. What matters more is that you already work on projects in practice.

Comments

What is the difference between IPMA-C and IPMA-D, and when should you choose which?
IPMA-C and IPMA-D are two different certification levels within the IPMA system. IPMA-D is aimed at project staff who are just starting out and mainly tests knowledge of project management: you understand how a project is put together, but you do not yet run one independently. IPMA-C is a level higher and is aimed at project managers who lead complex projects independently, manage a project team and steer on time, money, quality, information and organisation. Our classroom-based IPMA-C course matches that role and covers subjects such as project preparation, risk management, earned value management and project closure. Choose IPMA-D if you are just starting out and want to build up knowledge. Choose IPMA-C if you already have project experience and want to progress towards managing more complex projects independently.
How will I know whether, after the IPMA-C course, I am really ready to lead a complex project on my own, or will I still need experience or guidance afterwards?
The IPMA-C course gives you the framework to manage complex projects: you learn project phasing, risk management, earned value management, control of time, money, quality, information and organisation, and how to manage a project team. That is the theoretical and methodical basis, including preparation for the exam. Whether you then go straight on to lead a complex project independently depends on your practical experience. IPMA-C is designed for project managers and project leaders with some work experience who want to move on to more complex projects. Compare it to a driving licence: you master the rules and techniques, but you build up routine in practice. Many participants apply the material directly to an ongoing project. If you still have little experience, IPMA-D is a more logical first step.
What will I learn in the IPMA-C course that I would not get from a book or self-study?
Self-study helps you understand the IPMA-C theory, but the course adds three things you will not find in a book. First: practising with your own project case. You apply topics such as risk management, earned value management and phasing directly to a project you are actually working on. Second: feedback from an experienced trainer and from fellow participants with comparable challenges, particularly on the behavioural competences such as negotiating, leadership and conflict handling. Those are difficult to learn from a book. Third: targeted exam training on day 5, including recognising how questions are phrased. In the classroom course you systematically work through all the competences that IPMA-C tests, instead of only the parts you are already strong in.
How does the IPMA-C course compare with PRINCE2 Practitioner, and when should you choose which?
IPMA-C and PRINCE2 Practitioner are both aimed at experienced project managers, but they place the emphasis differently. IPMA-C is competence-based: you are assessed on a combination of knowledge, behaviour and context, such as leading, negotiating, resolving conflicts and developing a helicopter view. PRINCE2 is method-based and revolves around a fixed process model with principles, themes and processes. You opt for IPMA-C if you work in an environment where you determine your own approach and where personal effectiveness and stakeholder management carry a lot of weight. You opt for PRINCE2 if your employer or client works with that methodology and you need a standardised approach. The IPMA-C course at Learnit and concludes with exam training in preparation for the official exam of IPMA Certificering Nederland.
What does a typical IPMA-C course day at Learnit look like and how big are the groups?
The IPMA-C course at Learnit is taught in a classroom setting by a fixed trainer with experience as a project manager. Each day consists of a morning and an afternoon part, in which theory alternates with practical assignments, case studies from your own working environment and group discussions. Days 1 and 2 focus on project preparation, day 3 on set-up and execution, day 4 on control and day 5 on closure and exam training. The groups are small, which leaves room to bring in your own projects and receive targeted feedback. That is an important difference compared with large-scale programmes or e-learning: you have direct interaction with the trainer and fellow participants, including course materials and a certificate of participation.
During the IPMA-C course, what is the best way to approach preparing for the assessment, alongside the classroom days themselves?
The IPMA-C course at Learnit The course days lay the foundations: project preparation (days 1-2), project set-up and execution (day 3), project control (day 4) and project closure plus exam training (day 5). For the official IPMA-C assessment run by IPMA Certificering Nederland you should also allow for self-study between and after the course days. Plan for roughly 40-60 extra hours to work through the IPMA Competence Baseline, practice questions and the write-up of your own project case, which you submit for the assessment. The assessment itself consists of a written exam, a report on your own project and an interview. The exam training on day 5 helps you practise in a targeted way, but you arrange registration for and sitting of the assessment separately through IPMA Nederland.
