Yes. Before the course we discuss with you what the group can already do, where things go wrong in practice and what should be different afterwards. The trainer uses examples and exercises from your own work.
How large can the group be?
That depends on the course. For a skills course we prefer to work with a small group, so that everyone can really practise. If more people are involved, we schedule several groups or set up a fixed programme.
What does Absence Management: Conducting Absence Interviews in-company cost?

Yes. For in-company courses we deliver the training in the language of your choice, Dutch or English. Mention it in your request.
Do participants receive a certificate?
Yes, every participant receives a certificate of attendance afterwards.
How do I request a quote?
Via the quote form: state the course, the number of participants and roughly where and when you would like it. An adviser will then contact you.
Who is the Absence Management course: Conducting Absence Conversations suitable for?
The Absence Management: Conducting Absence Interviews course is ideally suited to managers and (HR) managers who regularly speak with employees who are absent. You learn how to conduct different types of conversations: the signalling interview, the absence management interview and the return-to-work interview. The course is also a good fit if you want to distinguish more clearly between unjustified absence and genuine incapacity for work.
Which types of absence conversations will you learn to conduct during the Absence Management course?
During the Absence Management course you will learn to conduct three types of absence conversation: the signalling conversation, the absence support conversation and the return-to-work conversation. Each conversation has its own angle, depending on the moment within the period of absence. In the classroom you will practise how to clarify absence, explore its causes and arrive at a solution together with the employee.
Do you receive a certificate after the Absence Management: Conducting Absence Interviews course?
Yes, after completing the Absence Management: Conducting Absence Interviews course you will receive a certificate of participation from Learnit. This certificate confirms that you have fully attended the classroom-based training course and have practised the conversational skills covered on identifying, supporting and returning to work. The certificate is a useful addition to your HR or management profile.
Is prior knowledge required for the Absence Management: Conducting Absence Interviews course?
No, no specific prior knowledge is required for the Absence Management: Conducting Absence Interviews course. The classroom training course is built up from the basics and is suitable for managers and (HR) managers who want to learn how to conduct absence interviews. Practical experience of managing staff is an advantage, as during the course you will immediately make links with your own cases.
What does the teaching method of the Absence Management: Conducting Absence Interviews course look like?
The Absence Management course is taught in a classroom setting and combines theory with plenty of practical exercise. You alternate between experiencing, experimenting with behaviour and conversation techniques, reflecting and exploring theory. Through role plays and practice situations you immediately experience the effect of new behaviour. An intake interview takes place beforehand, so that the programme matches your learning objectives and your own working situation.
What is the difference between this Absence Management course and a Bad News Conversations course or general conversation techniques?
The Absence Management: Conducting Absence Interviews course focuses specifically on the three types of conversation surrounding sickness absence: the signalling interview, the absence management interview and the return-to-work interview. Each conversation has its own moment in the absence process and its own angle. In addition to conversation skills, the course also covers incapacity for work, unjustified absence, the causes and consequences of absence, and relevant figures, facts and rules. A general conversation techniques course mainly deals with structure and conversation skills, without the legal and organisational context of absence. A Bad News Conversations course focuses on one type of conversation about a one-off message. Choose this classroom course if, as a manager or HR manager, you deal with absence on a structural basis and want to be able to tackle both the conversations and the underlying absence issues.
When should you opt for a classroom absence management course instead of leaving absence interviews to the company doctor or occupational health service?
The company doctor assesses medical incapacity for work; as a manager or HR manager you conduct the identification, support and return-to-work interviews yourself. That division of roles is both legal and practical: you are responsible for the working relationship and reintegration, the doctor for the medical assessment. Choose this classroom-based training course if you conduct absence interviews on a regular basis and find that you get stuck with unjustified absence, relational causes or long-term absence. You practise the three types of interview live and receive direct feedback from a trainer – something an occupational health service does not provide and which is missing in self-study or e-learning. It is not useful if absence in your organisation is incidental and limited to short-term sick leave.
What do you learn on this training course that you would not get from a book or an online article about absence management?
Books and articles explain perfectly well what a signalling, support or return-to-work interview is. What they do not teach you is how you yourself react when an employee becomes emotional, remains vague about their symptoms or places the cause outside themselves. The Absence Management: Conducting Absence Interviews course works with concrete experience, experimenting with behaviour, reflection and theory. You practise conducting interviews in practice and receive direct feedback from the trainer and fellow participants. You also discuss how to remove internal causes of absence and when absence is unjustified. The difference from self-study therefore lies in practising under guidance and experiencing the effect of your own behaviour in a conversation. Something that reading alone does not provide.
