Absence is part of every organisation, but structural or long-term absence calls for a different approach. In this course you learn how to use signalling, support and return-to-work interviews effectively in order to make absence a subject for discussion and to resolve it.
Absence occurs in every organisation. Usually it is no more than a bout of flu, but what do you do when absence becomes structural or when the causes are more serious, such as long-term illness, tensions in the workplace or problems in the relational sphere?
In this course you learn how to support absent employees effectively by means of absence interviews. You gain insight into the causes and consequences of absence, and you practise with different types of conversation that suit the stage of the absence process: the signalling interview, the absence support interview and the return-to-work interview.
You will work on themes such as incapacity for work, unjustified absence, conducting conversations and removing internal causes. You will also be given the relevant figures, facts and rules surrounding absence. The course alternates theory with practical exercises, so that you can apply what you have learned directly in your daily work.
After this training course you will recognise signs of absenteeism at an early stage and know how to respond to them as a manager or HR manager. You will conduct signalling, support and return-to-work interviews with more composure and direction, and know which approach suits which moment in the absence process.
You will learn to distinguish unjustified absence from genuine incapacity for work and will be able to raise underlying causes for discussion, whether these lie in the work situation, in relationships or in private life. You will also know the key figures, facts and rules surrounding absenteeism, so that you conduct your conversations from a solid basis.
The result: less unnecessary absence, a faster and more sustainable return of employees and conversations in which you and your employee make progress.
This training course is particularly suitable for managers and (HR) managers who regularly deal with employees on sick leave in their role and who want to take an active supporting role in this.
During the course you alternate between concrete experience, experimenting with behaviour and techniques, reflecting and exploring theory. As a result, the programme suits every type of participant. There is a great deal of action in the course, so that you actually experience the effect of new behaviour. That way you recognise more quickly what works.
We also place the emphasis on ownership: you are responsible for your own development process. We invite you to reflect continuously and to make connections with your own practice. The aim is to increase your insight and to let you make the translation to your own situation. That increases the chance of a lasting change in behaviour.
You do not need any specific prior knowledge for this course. It does help if you deal with absent employees in your work, for example as a manager or HR professional. That way you can apply what you learn directly to your own practice.
Nothing in particular. The course is aimed at team leaders and (HR) managers who want to learn how to conduct absence interviews. An individual intake takes place beforehand to identify your learning objectives and tailor the programme accordingly.
Would you like to organise this training for a whole group or several groups? This can be cost-effective. For example, we can tailor the content entirely to your organisation, and training a whole group is also cheaper.
Are you looking at large numbers of participants or a complete academy? That involves a great deal. Consider planning and communication, for example, or identifying and agreeing the objectives and content of the training. Or differences in level, feedback mechanisms and safeguarding. Fortunately, Learnit has extensive experience in this field (more than 25 years) and we are happy to help you through this process.
The training is given in Dutch as standard. The trainer has a good command of English. English-language course material can be used. With a minimum enrolment of 3 participants, the training can also be given entirely in English.
At Learnit you will always find a course that takes you further. From (technical) IT skills to communication or personal leadership. You can also choose the training format that suits you best: a classroom course, a tailor-made course at your own office, an online course or an e-learning. We have the right course and the right format for everyone. Because learning in the way that suits you best delivers the best results.
Personal attention and a pleasant atmosphere. Whether you take a course with us, at your office or on your own PC, we make sure you feel at home enough to push your boundaries.
New opportunities arise when you get moving. Stay sharp. Keep taking new steps. We encourage you to take the plunge and really go for it.
Discover something new. Build on your strengths. And choose your own path. We help you grow with training courses and learning formats that genuinely suit you.
We always think in terms of possibilities and win-win. And every day we work on new solutions for tomorrow. By offering training courses that leave you well prepared for the future.
We don't make empty promises. What we do offer is quality, knowledge and experience. A broad range of courses, made possible by our inspired staff and trainers.
We listen to what matters to you. To what you need. Because that is where our solution, our tailored approach, begins. Understanding each other properly and communicating clearly: that is what we believe in.
Taking a training course at Learnit means learning together. Together with your experienced trainer, together with your course group or together with your colleagues. And whether you take the training at home, at your office or at one of our training locations, we are always available to help you. To share our knowledge with you in a way that is genuinely useful to you. Getting further together through personal attention and understanding each other well; that is what we believe in.
Learning theory from a book that you can then hardly use in your work? Not at Learnit! Whichever training you take with us, you can put it to use at your workplace straight away. Because of the unique learning objectives you set together with the trainer at the start of the training. Because of the alternation between theory and (interactive) practical assignments. And by bringing the challenges you face in your daily work along to the training.
No suitable start date? Send us a date request. Then we will look together at how we can still meet your training needs.

"It is a course you can apply in practice, and you learn a great deal about communication. You gain a new perspective on your own role in it."
- Conversation techniques and influencing
“I thought the course was good and, above all, useful and instructive. Even though I am not feeling great at the moment and am not quite myself, I still got a lot out of it. Most people dread role-plays, but once you are over the 'fear', doing a role-play is great fun and very instructive.”
M. Mulder, Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations (BZK) FMHaaglanden – Conversation Techniques
“I had a private course instead of a two-day course. It was intensive, but incredibly instructive. I notice that filming gives a lot of insight into the way you conduct a conversation. Beforehand I thought it would be a long day, but in the end the time went very quickly. We were able to cover a lot of topics and the variety keeps you sharp. I am very satisfied with the trainer. The personal approach and the link to the previous course in particular were very good.”
C. Zanoni, Stg. Werkgever Sportclubs- Conducting Performance and Appraisal Interviews
“Valuable tools that can be applied in practice!”
J. Hartmann - Free Conversation Techniques webinar
“I found the 'confrontational conversation skills and delivering bad news' course interesting. There is a theoretical grounding (general communication, communication specifically aimed at the 'roles' you can adopt in communication, the distinction between the questions 'do I have something to ask?' and 'do I have something to say?' when giving feedback, an explanation of the 4G model that you can apply in practice straight away, using INGE and LSD, etc.) and also a large practical element. That keeps the participants active. The role-play actor was experienced and responded well to the participants' input. The trainer is experienced and managed to put us at ease and offer a clear and safe environment, so that we could make good use of the training day to practise common situations from our own work. In the end we spent most of the time on confrontational conversation skills and less on delivering bad news, but we were given a number of useful pointers on that too.”
B. Koch - Stichting Jados - Holding Confrontational Conversations
“Very well thought-out course. Theory, applying it yourself, role play (which elements work and which do not), role play again. So that all facets were covered through repetition. Training is repetition. The trainer created a very pleasant atmosphere and had perfect expertise.”
H. Hofland, P-Services HR Group- Conducting Performance and Appraisal Interviews
"In this course I learned to analyse why conversations go the way they do. What does a conversation trigger in me, how do I then react, how would I like to react and how can I go about that? What might a conversation trigger in the other person and how can I deal with that? A lot of attention was paid to personal learning objectives. As a result, the content of the course matched what I wanted to achieve well."
- Conversation Techniques
“Good preparation, good content, well delivered.”
R. Koops, Ministerie van Binnenlandse Zaken en Koninkrijksrelaties (BZK) FMHaaglanden - Conversation Techniques
“My experience is very positive; the material is presented in a playful way, so you take it in easily. You can then apply it smoothly in your own situation. I have certainly taken good things away from it.”
E. Lammertink, Vestia- Conversation Techniques (follow-up course)
“I found the content of the course very good. The trainer addressed all the cases and went into each one individually. The feedback given was received very positively.”
J. Schuurman, FM Laaglanden - Conversation Techniques
"There was plenty of room to address everyone's personal issues. The trainer gave clear explanations and good examples. He really made me think!"
- Motivational interviewing
“Tailor-made course, matching your learning objectives!”
D. Hanemaaijer, Regenboogschool - Conversation Techniques
“Despite its short duration, this course answered my question exactly. There was ample room for practice, relevant input and materials from the trainer, and it was delivered in a particularly pleasant atmosphere. A great deal of attention was paid to tailoring it to the participants' wishes, without losing direction. That makes the course itself an example of good conversation techniques/communication.”
G. de Boer, ORETC - Conversation Techniques
“The tips and tricks you get from this course are highly applicable to day-to-day practice. It is good to sharpen your focus again in this way.”
S. Kortekaas, Beter:- Absence support: Conducting absence interviews

“In a short space of time, this webinar provides a few important tools for conversation techniques that can then be used in a great many different situations. It is done clearly and with great expertise.”

“The content of the course is easy to apply in practice”
C. Brandsen-Nicolai - Vattenval N.V. - Motivational Interviewing
“The course was well put together and I got a lot out of it. You could clearly tell that the trainer is an expert in this field and beyond. We also covered a number of matters (briefly) that were not directly related to the course itself. I found the intake interview beforehand surprising. I noticed that it allows you to make a good start on the course straight away.”
