Frequently asked questions
- Who is the Conflict Management course suitable for?
- The Conflict Management course is suitable for anyone who regularly has to deal with conflict situations, or who tends to avoid them. Think of managers, team members, HR staff, customer contact staff and professionals who want to feel more confident. No prior knowledge is required. You work in a small group of no more than eight participants, so there is plenty of room to practise with your own real-life situations.
- Which topics are covered during the Conflict Management course?
- During the Conflict Management course you cover, among other things: different types of conflict, verbal and non-verbal communication, causes of miscommunication, conflict management styles, core qualities and pitfalls, limiting beliefs, conversation techniques for de-escalation, dealing with resistance and emotions, and discovering mutual interests. You practise extensively with real-life situations, so that you apply what you have learned straight away.
- Which conversation techniques do you learn during the Conflict Management course?
- During the Conflict Management course, you learn concrete conversation techniques to de-escalate conflicts: active listening, summarising, asking follow-up questions and identifying causes and sticking points. You also practise recognising resistance and emotions, using verbal and non-verbal communication and making constructive use of openings. By practising extensively in a group of no more than eight participants, you experience the effect of a different approach straight away.
- What is the approach of the Conflict Management course?
- The Conflict Management course works with a personal intake beforehand, in which the trainer identifies your learning objectives and tailors the programme accordingly. The course is classroom-based and is given in groups of no more than eight participants. The approach is active: you learn mainly by doing and by practising with realistic conflict situations, not by listening to theory.
- Which conflict management styles will you learn to apply during the Conflict Management course?
- During the Conflict Management course you gain insight into different conflict management styles and learn which style best suits which situation. You examine your own preferred style, discover your core qualities and pitfalls, and practise with alternative styles. This allows you to switch flexibly and to respond more decisively, more convincingly and more empathetically in difficult situations.
- What is the difference between the Conflict Management course and a Conversation Techniques or Negotiation course?
- The Conflict Management course focuses specifically on situations in which emotions, resistance and conflicting interests play a role. You learn to analyse conflicts, de-escalate them and turn them into a constructive outcome. A Conversation Techniques course is broader and mainly covers general communication skills such as listening, summarising and asking follow-up questions. Without the specific focus on escalation dynamics. A Negotiation course is about reaching a deal in which both parties agree on terms, often in a business context. In Conflict Management, by contrast, you work on your own role, core qualities, pitfalls and limiting beliefs around conflict. You practise different conflict management styles and learn to deal with resistance in yourself and in the other person. The course is delivered in a classroom setting in groups of no more than eight participants.
- When should you choose a classroom-based Conflict Management course instead of a book or online course?
- A book or e-learning gives you theory about conflict styles, communication and de-escalation, but you do not practise with your own reaction patterns under pressure. It is precisely the latter that makes the difference during a real conflict. The classroom Conflict Management course In a group of no more than 8 participants you practise with realistic conversation situations, receive direct feedback from the trainer and see how others respond to your attitude and tone. Beforehand there is an intake in which your learning objectives are identified. Choose a classroom course if you notice that you avoid conflict, react emotionally or get stuck in repeating patterns. Choose self-study if you are mainly looking for conceptual understanding and rarely need to conduct such conversations yourself.
- How can I tell in advance whether the Conflict Management course matches my personal situation?
- Before the Conflict Management course (classroom-based) begins, the trainer holds an intake interview with you. In that conversation, the trainer establishes which conflict situations you encounter in practice, which role you usually take on and what your personal learning objectives are. The final programme is determined on this basis. Think of an emphasis on de-escalation, dealing with resistance, or recognising your own core qualities and pitfalls. The group has a maximum of eight participants, which leaves room for you to bring in and practise your own cases. Not sure whether the course suits your role or type of conflict? You can discuss this during the intake interview before you make a definite booking.
