Inappropriate behaviour in the workplace calls for recognition, understanding and action. In this course you gain insight into causes, dynamics and approaches, and you practise skills that help you contribute to a safe and respectful working environment.

Description

In this course you get to grips with inappropriate behaviour in the workplace. You look in depth at what it actually is, how it arises and how it manifests itself in practice. Alongside the theory, you actively work with interactive exercises and practice-oriented assignments, so that you recognise this behaviour sooner and can respond to it effectively.

You gain insight into the underlying causes and triggers of inappropriate behaviour. This allows you to act proactively and contribute to a safe, respectful working environment. You practise conducting conversations, giving feedback and using intervention techniques, and you also look at the subject from a legal and organisational perspective.

The course alternates between experiencing, experimenting, reflecting and theory. This variation lets you experience the effect of new behaviour for yourself and translate it to your own working practice.

Topics

  • What inappropriate behaviour is and how it arises
  • The benefits of a proactive approach
  • The impact of unwanted behaviour on the individual and the team
  • The role of leadership in a safe working culture
  • Starting the conversation about unwanted behaviour
  • Group dynamics and behavioural patterns
  • Using feedback as a tool
  • Practical conversation techniques and interventions

Result

After this course you will recognise inappropriate behaviour at an early stage and understand where it comes from. You will know how group dynamics play a part and which triggers keep behaviour in place.

You will have sharpened your communication and conversation skills and will be able to address unwanted behaviour, even when it becomes uncomfortable. Giving and receiving feedback will come more easily to you.

You will also have concrete strategies for intervention and prevention, and an understanding of the legal and organisational framework. This allows you to contribute actively to a safe, respectful working environment.

Target audience

This course has been developed for professionals who want to recognise, discuss and address inappropriate behaviour in the workplace. Think of managers, HR professionals, confidential advisers and team leaders. As an employee or project leader you will also get a great deal out of this course, because a safe and respectful working environment is something you create together.

You do not need any specific prior knowledge. We do ask you to be open and willing to look at your own role and behaviour.

Teaching method

During the course you alternate between concrete experience, experimenting with behaviour and techniques, reflecting and exploring theory. This means the programme suits all types of participant. There is plenty of action in the course, so that you genuinely experience the effect of new behaviour. That way you recognise what works and what does not.

You are responsible for your own development and take ownership of it. During the course we invite you to reflect continuously and to make connections with your own practice. The aim is to increase your insight and to let you make the translation to your own situation yourself. That increases the chance of genuine behavioural change.

Prior knowledge

You do not need any specific prior knowledge. An open attitude and a willingness to reflect on your own behaviour and that of others are enough to take full part in this course.

Who is the Inappropriate Behaviour course suitable for?
The course is suitable for anyone who wants to contribute to a safe and respectful working environment. It was originally designed for managers and HR professionals, but employees, team leaders, confidential advisers and prevention officers also get value from it. You do not need any specific prior education. What counts is your commitment to a healthy organisational culture and your willingness to reflect on behaviour.
Do you receive a certificate after the Inappropriate Behaviour course?
Yes, on completion of the Inappropriate Behaviour course you receive a certificate of participation from Learnit. This certificate confirms that you took an active part in the course and covered the topics relating to recognising, understanding and addressing inappropriate behaviour. No test is required; participation and active contribution during the classroom day form the basis for the certificate.
Can the Inappropriate Behaviour course also be taken in-company?
Yes, the Inappropriate Behaviour course is also available in-company. In that case we deliver the course at your organisation's premises, tailored to your practical situation and specific issues. Beforehand we establish the learning objectives through an intake, so that the programme matches the prior knowledge and experience of the group. In the classroom, the standard version takes
Which topics are covered during the Inappropriate Behaviour course?
During the Inappropriate Behaviour course you cover eight core topics: recognising inappropriate behaviour, the benefits of a proactive approach, the impact of unwanted behaviour, the role of leadership, holding a dialogue about unwanted behaviour, group dynamics, feedback as an instrument and practical conversation skills. The course lasts
Is prior knowledge required for the Inappropriate Behaviour course?
No, no specific prior knowledge is required for the Inappropriate Behaviour course. The course is accessible to anyone within an organisation who wants to contribute to a safe working environment. Beforehand, an individual intake takes place in which your learning objectives and practical experience are mapped out. On that basis, the programme of this classroom course is tailored to the group.
What will you learn on this course that you would not get from a book or an e-learning on inappropriate behaviour?
The difference lies in practising with real behaviour. A book or e-learning gives you the theory on inappropriate behaviour, legal frameworks and conversation models, but it does not train your conversational skills. During this classroom day you alternate theory with practical exercises: you hold conversations about unwanted behaviour, experience group dynamics first-hand and receive direct feedback from the trainer and fellow participants. You work towards four concrete outcomes: insight into the dynamics of inappropriate behaviour, communication skills, strategies for intervention and prevention, and the legal and organisational perspective. An e-learning is suitable for learning concepts; this course is what you need as soon as you actually have to hold the conversation with an employee, colleague or team.
How does this course relate to having a code of conduct drawn up or to confidential adviser training?
A code of conduct and a confidential adviser are formal instruments: they set out what is undesirable and provide a point for reporting after the fact. This course focuses on the behaviour before that stage: recognising signals, starting the conversation and intervening in the group dynamic. You learn to interpret inappropriate behaviour, use feedback as an instrument and handle difficult conversations. That makes it an addition, not a replacement. Organisations that only have a code of conduct often lack the conversational skills to make that code work in practice. If you already have a confidential adviser, this course helps managers and colleagues to spot situations earlier, so that fewer cases escalate into a formal report. For a complete policy you combine both: structure and behaviour.
When do you opt for an Inappropriate Behaviour course rather than a longer programme or team coaching?
A training course works best when you, as a manager, HR professional or employee, want to build up your own individual toolkit: learning to recognise signals, daring to have the conversation and knowing which interventions are appropriate. During the course you receive theory, exercises and feedback in a classroom setting with participants from various organisations. That also brings in fresh perspectives from outside your own team. Opt for a longer in-company programme or team coaching when there is already a concrete problem within a specific team, or when you want to guide a cultural change. In that case several sessions, observation and follow-up are needed. A code of conduct or confidential adviser course is something you address separately. Many participants take this course as a starting point and then decide whether follow-up interventions are needed within their organisation.
How do I know whether a course is enough to really tackle inappropriate behaviour in my team, or do I need more?
The course is enough if your aim is to recognise, raise and intervene in concrete situations. You work on understanding the dynamics, conducting conversations and using feedback as an instrument. That gives you a workable framework for picking up signals and starting the conversation. Do you have structural cultural problems, ongoing incidents, or do you want to revise policy? Then this is a starting point, not a final destination. In that case, combine the course with a confidential adviser structure, a code of conduct or team coaching. For managers and HR who want to sharpen their own skills, the format is a good fit; for a complete cultural change within an organisation, a multi-track approach is needed. In the intake beforehand you determine together whether the content matches your situation.
What is the difference between addressing inappropriate behaviour as a manager and as a confidential adviser, and which role do you learn in this course?
A confidential adviser receives reports, offers a safe place for the person reporting and refers them on. That role is reactive and confidential. A manager or HR professional acts proactively instead: recognising signals in the group dynamic, starting the conversation, giving feedback and intervening before behaviour escalates. This course focuses on that second role. You learn how to recognise undesirable behaviour, interpret the underlying causes, and how to intervene through practical conversation techniques and feedback. The legal and organisational perspective is also covered. If you are a confidential adviser, a specific confidential adviser programme makes more sense. If, as a manager, HR professional or committed employee, you want to contribute to a safe culture, this course is a good fit.
How do you tackle inappropriate behaviour in a hybrid working environment where teams hardly ever see each other in person?
Hybrid working makes signals of inappropriate behaviour harder to spot. Much unwanted behaviour shifts to chat, video calls and email, where non-verbal signals disappear and exclusion becomes more subtle. On the Inappropriate Behaviour course (classroom) you learn to analyse group dynamics and behavioural patterns, including when these play out digitally. You practise conducting conversations and using feedback as an instrument, skills you apply directly in one-to-one conversations by video or at the office. For hybrid teams this specifically means: scheduling short check-ins more often, taking written communication into account as a signal, and making clear team agreements about online conduct. The course does not provide a ready-made hybrid protocol, but it does give you the framework to choose interventions that suit your own working situation.
