As a project manager, you want to be in control of your project and your team. In this course you work on the competencies, planning techniques and personal skills you need for this. You prepare specifically for the official IPMA-D exam.

Description

In the IPMA-D course you work on the competencies and personal skills you need as a project manager. You learn all about the general management activities involved in a project: setting project objectives, assembling and leading a project team, project phasing and project control. You also work on planning, structuring and project communication.

You develop the skills you need as a project manager: listening, organising, taking the initiative at the right moment, an eye for detail and a helicopter view. You also learn to anticipate problems, communicate clearly and delegate effectively. The course prepares you specifically for the official exam for IPMA-D Certificering Nederland.

For teams and organisations. If you want to prepare a group of project leaders for IPMA-D certification, we deliver the preparation in-company, using your own projects as case material. The exam itself is not included in the price; you sit it with IPMA Certificering Nederland.

Result

After the IPMA-D course you know which personal skills a good project manager needs and you are familiar with the phases of a project and your role in each phase. You recognise the control factors time, money and quality, and you know what distinguishes a project organisation from a line organisation.

You can apply various project models, structures and methods, and you work with planning techniques such as CPM, PERT and Gantt. With a Work Breakdown Structure you break project activities down into manageable parts. You also give your project team purposeful direction during delivery and keep the client, team members and other stakeholders clearly informed of progress.

And you will be well prepared for the official IPMA-D Certification Netherlands exam.

Target audience

The IPMA-D course is intended for project staff who want to start leading projects themselves and for starting project managers without concrete project experience. Are you already working on projects and would you like to move up to a project manager role? Then this course is a good next step.

The course is theoretical in nature and prepares you for the official exam for IPMA-D Certification Netherlands. If you are looking for a more practice-oriented course, our Project Leadership course is probably a better fit.

The programme is also suitable for a group of project leaders who want to work with the same approach and terminology.

Teaching method

During the IPMA-D course you alternate theory with practical exercises and assignments. You work actively with project management models, planning techniques and real-life cases. The experienced trainer explains the material, answers your questions and gives you personal feedback.

You work in a small group, so there is ample scope for interaction and for exchanging experiences with other participants. Day four focuses on targeted exam preparation, in which you practise with exam questions and prepare for the official IPMA-D exam.

You receive the course materials in advance so that you can prepare properly. Afterwards you receive a Learnit certificate of participation.

Prior knowledge

You do not need any specific prior knowledge for this course. Some affinity with working on projects or experience as a project team member is useful, but not a requirement. You learn all the basic concepts of project management step by step during the course.

Can I cancel free of charge?

Yes. Up to four weeks before the first day of the course you can cancel free of charge, without giving a reason. You then receive a credit note or, if you have already paid, a refund. If you cancel later, you pay part of the course fee: 25% between four and two weeks before the start, 75% in the two weeks before it and 100% in the final week. Moving to another start date is free of charge up to two weeks before the start, after that 50%. Sending a colleague in your place is always possible. Read the cancellation terms.

What prior knowledge do you need for the IPMA-D course?
No specific prior education is required for the IPMA-D course. The course has been developed for project staff who want to lead projects themselves and for starting project managers without concrete project experience. An affinity with working on a project basis is an advantage, but concrete project experience is not necessary. During the classroom-based course you build the theoretical foundation you need for the official IPMA-D exam from Certificering Nederland.
Is the IPMA-D course good preparation for the official IPMA-D exam?
Yes, the IPMA-D course prepares you specifically for the official exam set by IPMA Certificering Nederland. Day 4 is devoted entirely to exam training, in which you work through practice questions and refresh your knowledge. Do you mainly want to work on practical skills without certification? Then Project Leadership is a better fit.
How does a classroom-based IPMA-D course compare with self-study using a book or e-learning?
Self-study and e-learning work for the theory, but IPMA-D also tests behavioural competences and calls for reflection on your role as a project manager. In the classroom-based IPMA-D course you practise with cases, receive direct feedback from an experienced trainer and exchange experiences with other participants. That speeds up the learning process, particularly on subjects such as leadership, team building and communication with clients. Self-study takes more time on average and offers no practice in interaction. The classroom-based version is suitable if you want to work towards the official IPMA-D exam in a structured way and want to develop your personal skills. Only choose self-study if you already have project experience and can work through exam material independently.
What does the classroom-based IPMA-D course give me that I cannot get from an exam trainer or practice exams?
An exam trainer or online practice exams mainly test your theoretical knowledge. The classroom IPMA-D course adds three things you do not get from those. Firstly, you practise the behavioural competences (leadership, team building, communication with the client and team members) in interaction with other participants. IPMA-D also assesses behaviour, not just knowledge. Secondly, you apply techniques such as CPM, PERT, Gantt and Work Breakdown Structure directly to cases, instead of merely recognising them in multiple-choice questions. Thirdly, on day 4 you receive targeted exam training in which you practise questions and get feedback on your approach. That way you are prepared both in terms of content and at exam level. Practice exams remain useful as a supplement between the course days.
How do I know whether IPMA-D suits me, or whether I would be better off choosing a different project management certification?
IPMA-D suits you if you are a project team member or are just starting out as a project manager and still have little concrete project experience. The certification focuses on knowledge and personal skills, not on demonstrable project hours. That is what distinguishes IPMA-D from the higher IPMA levels (C, B, A), where you do have to prove experience as a project leader. Compared with PRINCE2 Foundation, IPMA-D has a broader focus: alongside methodology, it also covers leadership, team building, communication and planning techniques such as CPM, PERT, Gantt and WBS. PRINCE2 is more strongly method-driven and process-oriented. If you mainly want to train practical skills without an exam, the Project Leadership course is a better fit. Choose IPMA-D if you want to pass the official exam for IPMA-D Certificering Nederland. The classroom-based course takes several days and prepares you fully for the exam.
How soon after the IPMA-D course can I sit the exam and obtain the certificate?
You sit the IPMA-D exam at IPMA Certificering Nederland, separately from the course itself. Learnit's classroom-based course prepares you in terms of content, including a full exam training day on day 4. You schedule the exam yourself via IPMA-NL; the lead time depends on the next scheduled exam date, usually within a few weeks to months after your course. The IPMA-D exam consists of a written theory exam. One important note: IPMA-D tests knowledge of project management, not practical experience. You can therefore obtain the certificate without having led any projects yet. If you subsequently want to progress to IPMA-C or IPMA-B, demonstrable project experience is required.
What exactly does the exam training on day 4 involve and how does it differ from a separate IPMA-D exam training course?
Day 4 of the IPMA-D course at Learnit is entirely devoted to exam preparation. You practise with exam questions in the format used by IPMA Certificering Nederland, discuss pitfalls and revise the core theory from days 1 to 3: setting objectives, phasing, control, control factors (time, money, quality), planning techniques such as CPM, PERT and Gantt, and the Work Breakdown Structure. The difference with a stand-alone exam training course: that assumes you already have a command of the material and focuses purely on exam technique. Day 4 builds directly on the three preceding content days, in the same group and with the same trainer. That makes sense if you are taking on IPMA-D from scratch or with limited project experience. If you have already attended a course and are only looking for fine-tuning, a separate exam trainer is more efficient. The full course.
What happens if I discover during the IPMA-D course that project management is not for me after all?
The IPMA-D course is deliberately a combination of theory and self-reflection, precisely because project management demands so many personal skills: listening, delegating, anticipating, resilience under pressure and a helicopter view. During the course you work with models and planning techniques (CPM, PERT, Gantt, WBS). You also gain a realistic picture of the role: dealing with clients, team dynamics and the control of time, money and quality. Some participants discover that they would rather remain a specialist project team member than become a project manager with ultimate responsibility. That insight is valuable in itself. After all, you can also apply the knowledge as a project support officer or team member. If you want to test in advance whether the role suits you, the more practical Project Leadership course is a more logical starting point than IPMA-D, which is primarily aimed at certification.
