When should you choose this classroom course instead of learning on your own via YouTube or a free online basics course?
Teaching yourself via YouTube works if you already know where to start and you don't mind working out which video matches your version of Windows or Office. On this course you are in a small group with a trainer who looks over your shoulder as soon as something doesn't work. That saves frustration if you are still unsure about the mouse, saving files or the difference between a browser and a program. The course gives you structure: from computer basics to Windows, the internet, email, Word and Excel. Choose it if you want a solid starting point and then want to move on to, for example, a follow-up Outlook or Word course.
What is the difference between this basic course and a specific Office course such as Word or Excel Basics?
The Computer Skills course focuses on the absolute basics: how a computer and Windows work, how to use the mouse, start up programs, save and move files, send email and look up information on the internet. Word and Excel are covered briefly, only to show what you can do with them. A Word Basics or Excel Basics course assumes you can already work with Windows and goes deep into one program: formatting, templates, formulas, tables. This course is therefore a stepping stone. If you have little or no experience with computers, this is where you start. If you already work routinely with Windows and want to become better at one Office program, choose the specific course straight away, such as Outlook Basics, Word Basics or Excel Basics.
