You will discover how to look up information on the internet and how to communicate by email. You will also practise writing a text in Word and making a simple calculation in Excel. Afterwards you will have a solid basis for working with a computer independently and you will know which next steps suit you.

For teams and organisations. For a group of employees we also deliver this basic course in-company. In consultation, we align it with the programs you use.

Result

After this course you know how a computer works and you can use Windows and Office independently. You open and close programs, work smoothly with the mouse and find your way around your desktop.

You search for information on the internet, send and receive emails and know how to work safely online. In Word you draft a tidy letter or text and in Excel you make a simple calculation.

You will also be able to save, find, move, copy and paste files. You will know the main do's and don'ts and have a solid basis for developing your computer skills further, for example with a follow-up Outlook, Word or Excel course.

Target audience

Do you have little or no experience with computers and would you like to learn to work with Windows and Office? Then this course is right for you. You build a solid foundation in general computer skills and are well prepared if you then want to move on to a specific Office course, such as our Outlook Basics course.

The course is suitable for employees who have worked little with a computer so far and now have to do their scheduling, emailing or record-keeping digitally.

Teaching method

During this course you work in a small group under the guidance of an experienced trainer. You first receive a brief explanation and then immediately get to work on the computer yourself. That way you experience straight away how it works and remember it better.

The trainer walks around, looks over your shoulder and helps you personally where needed. You set your own pace and ask questions whenever something is unclear. Everything is explained step by step, without complicated jargon.

You practise with hands-on examples you will recognise from everyday life: sending an email, looking something up on the internet or typing a letter in Word. Afterwards you receive a certificate of participation and you will have a solid basis for developing your computer skills further.

Prior knowledge

No prior knowledge is required for this course. You don't need to know anything about computers, Windows or Office yet. Can you switch on a computer? Then you can take part. We really do start at the beginning and take you through it step by step.

"It is an organisation that asks in advance what the training course should be about and with how many participants, so you know straight away where you stand. I found the collaboration pleasant. We were given a lot of information but also applied it in practice."

All you need to bring is the willingness to learn.

Is the Computer Skills Windows and Office course classroom-based or online?
The Computer Skills Windows and Office course is taught in a classroom at a Learnit location. You follow the course in a small group, together with an experienced trainer who guides you step by step. Classroom learning works well if you have little experience with computers, because you can ask questions straight away and practise together.
When should you choose this classroom course instead of learning on your own via YouTube or a free online basics course?
Teaching yourself via YouTube works if you already know where to start and you don't mind working out which video matches your version of Windows or Office. On this course you are in a small group with a trainer who looks over your shoulder as soon as something doesn't work. That saves frustration if you are still unsure about the mouse, saving files or the difference between a browser and a program. The course gives you structure: from computer basics to Windows, the internet, email, Word and Excel. Choose it if you want a solid starting point and then want to move on to, for example, a follow-up Outlook or Word course.
What is the difference between this basic course and a specific Office course such as Word or Excel Basics?
The Computer Skills course focuses on the absolute basics: how a computer and Windows work, how to use the mouse, start up programs, save and move files, send email and look up information on the internet. Word and Excel are covered briefly, only to show what you can do with them. A Word Basics or Excel Basics course assumes you can already work with Windows and goes deep into one program: formatting, templates, formulas, tables. This course is therefore a stepping stone. If you have little or no experience with computers, this is where you start. If you already work routinely with Windows and want to become better at one Office program, choose the specific course straight away, such as Outlook Basics, Word Basics or Excel Basics.
What will I actually be able to do on a computer after this course?
After the classroom course day you can carry out the basic operations independently. In concrete terms this means: starting up and shutting down a computer with Windows, navigating with the mouse, opening and closing programs, and saving, moving, copying and pasting files. You can look something up on the internet via a browser, compose and send an email, type a simple letter or text in Word, and make a basic calculation in Excel. This will not yet make you fluent at a productive working level. The follow-up courses such as Outlook Basics, Word Basics or Excel Basics are intended for that. The course is enough to find your way around a computer without help and to understand which next step suits your goal.
How do I know whether this basic course is enough for me, or whether I would be better off booking a follow-up course straight away?
This course is intended for people who have barely worked with a computer before. You learn the basics of Windows, the mouse, the internet, email and the first steps in Word and Excel. Do you already have experience with starting up, browsing and emailing, and do you mainly want to become more skilled in one specific program? Then you are better off choosing a targeted follow-up course straight away, for example Word Basics, Excel Basics or Outlook Basics. Not sure? A good rule of thumb: if you cannot currently save a file, send an attachment or open a tab in your browser on your own, then this basic course is the right place to start. A follow-up course then follows on logically.
Do you work on your own laptop during this course or on a Learnit computer, and does that make a difference to what you learn?
On the classroom-based Computer Skills course you work on a computer that Learnit sets up for you, running Windows 10 or 11 and a current version of Microsoft 365 (Word, Excel, Outlook). You do not need to bring a laptop of your own. This has a practical advantage: everyone in the group works with the same version, the same settings and the same screen layout. The trainer can follow along step by step without differences between devices getting in the way. Do you have a different operating system or an older version of Office at home? The basic principles you learn, such as saving files, copying and pasting, sending email and searching the internet, work in much the same way everywhere.
What is the difference between Windows 10 and Windows 11 for a beginner, and will I learn to work with both on this course?
The course focuses on the basics of working with Windows and Office, and those basics are largely the same in Windows 10 and Windows 11. You learn actions that work in both versions: starting and closing programs, using the mouse, saving and moving files, copying and pasting, and using the internet and email. The visible differences lie mainly in the design: in Windows 11 the start button is in the middle by default and menus look slightly different. The underlying logic remains the same. The same principle applies to Office: whether you work with Office 2019 or Microsoft 365, Word and Excel work identically in broad terms. After this classroom course day you will be able to carry out the basic actions independently on both Windows versions.
