What is the STAR method and how do you use it in selection interviews?
The STAR method is an interviewing technique in which you ask questions around Situation, Task, Action and Result. Using a concrete situation from the applicant's work history, you find out what tasks the person had, how they acted and what it produced. This gives you a realistic picture of competencies and behaviour instead of fine words.
How long does the Selection Interviews with STAR course last and what does it cost?
The Selection Interviews with STAR course lasts one classroom day. All course materials are included. You practise in a small group with case studies and practice interviews, so that you can apply the STAR method directly in your own selection interviews. No prior knowledge is required. You will find the current price on the course page, or you can ask us.
Who is the Selection Interviews with STAR course suitable for?
The Selection Interviews with STAR course is ideally suited to HR managers, line managers and recruiters who conduct job interviews. No prior knowledge is required. You learn to apply the STAR method in practice, so that you can probe specifically for competencies and behavioural indicators. Even if you only conduct selection interviews occasionally, you will gain tools to form a realistic picture of candidates.
Do you need prior knowledge for the Selection Interviews with STAR course?
No, no prior knowledge is required for the course Selection Interviews with STAR. You can start straight away, whatever your experience with selection interviews. It is useful, however, if your work involves job interviews or appraisal interviews, so that you can work with your own real-life examples during the practice interviews. An intake takes place beforehand to establish your learning objectives.
Which topics are covered in the Selection Interviews using STAR course?
The Selection Interviews with STAR course covers five main topics: the steps of the STAR model, questioning techniques, competencies and behavioural indicators, targeted probing, and practising with your own examples from work. You work on case studies and practice interviews in the classroom, so you apply the technique directly to recognisable situations from your own recruitment or HR practice.
How is the Selection Interviews with STAR course delivered and which working methods are used?
The Selection Interviews using STAR course is a classroom course in which theory and practice alternate. You work with case studies, practice interviews and examples from your own practice in order to apply the STAR method straight away. The approach combines concrete experience, experimenting with behaviour, reflection and exploring theory, so that you understand how STAR works and really master it.
What is the difference between the STAR method and an ordinary competency-based interview?
A competency-based interview is the broader category: you assess whether an applicant has certain competencies by asking about behaviour in the past. The STAR method is a specific interview structure within that approach. STAR stands for Situation, Task, Action and Result, and forces you to explore one concrete work situation fully per competency along these four steps. The difference lies in the discipline. Without STAR you often get general answers ('I'm good at working with others'). With STAR you keep probing until you know what someone did themselves, in which situation, and what it produced. In the classroom course you practise this questioning technique with case studies and your own real-life examples, including targeted follow-up questions on behavioural indicators.
When should you choose a classroom-based Selection Interviews with STAR course rather than a book or e-learning on the STAR method?
You can read up on the STAR method in an hour from a book or an article. The problem is not the theory but the application: probing vague answers, recognising when a candidate shifts from the situation to a general opinion, and linking behavioural indicators to competencies. You only learn that by practising with feedback. In this classroom course you conduct practice interviews and work with case studies and examples from your own practice. A trainer and fellow participants give immediate feedback on your questioning technique. Choose self-study if you only want to understand what STAR involves. Choose the classroom course if you genuinely want to conduct better selection interviews and learn how to probe for concrete behaviour.
