Do you really want to know who is sitting opposite you in a job interview? With the STAR method you bring past behaviour to the surface and gain a realistic picture of your candidate's competencies. In this course you put STAR straight into practice.
In a selection interview the applicant will naturally present themselves in the best possible light. The only question is whether that picture matches what they will actually deliver in the workplace. The STAR method helps you with this: a structured interview technique that starts from a concrete situation from the candidate's work history. STAR stands for Situation, Task, Action and Result.
In this course you will put the principles of STAR into practice. You work on questioning techniques, learn to probe specifically for competencies and behavioural indicators, and practise with case studies and interviews from your own practice. In this way you build up a realistic picture of what a candidate really has to offer.
The course alternates theory with practice, reflection and experimenting with new behaviour. You are given plenty of scope to make links with your own work situation, so that what you have learned sticks after the course as well.
After this course you will conduct selection interviews using the STAR method. You know how to select a concrete work situation and probe it in a targeted way: what task did the applicant have, what actions did he or she take and what was the result? This gives you a realistic picture of someone's competencies and behaviour, instead of a rehearsed story.
You recognise evasive or socially desirable answers and know how to probe further. You also link competencies to concrete behavioural indicators, so you can compare candidates more effectively and make a well-founded selection decision.
This course is particularly suitable for (HR) managers, team leaders and recruiters who conduct selection interviews and want to gain a sharper picture of candidates. Even if you only occasionally sit on selection panels, it gives you tools to probe more effectively and assess competencies better.
During the course you alternate between concrete experience, experimenting with behaviour and techniques, reflection and exploring theory. As a result, the programme suits every type of participant. There is plenty of action in the course, so that you genuinely experience the effect of new behaviour. That way you recognise more quickly what works.
We also place the emphasis on ownership: you are responsible for your own development. We invite you to reflect continuously and to make connections with your daily practice. Our aim is to increase your insight and to let you make the translation to your own work yourself. That increases the chance of lasting behavioural change.
No specific prior knowledge is required for this course. A role in which you conduct, or will be conducting, selection interviews will help you to link the STAR method directly to your own practice.
None in particular.
Would you like to organise this training for a whole group or several groups? This can be cost-effective. For example, we can tailor the content entirely to your organisation, and training a whole group is also cheaper.
Are you looking at large numbers of participants or a complete academy? That involves a great deal. Consider planning and communication, for example, or identifying and agreeing the objectives and content of the training. Or differences in level, feedback mechanisms and safeguarding. Fortunately, Learnit has extensive experience in this field (more than 25 years) and we are happy to help you through this process.
The training is given in Dutch as standard. The trainer has a good command of English. English-language course material can be used. With a minimum enrolment of 3 participants, the training can also be given entirely in English.
When would you like to start?
At Learnit you will always find a course that takes you further. From (technical) IT skills to communication or personal leadership. You can also choose the training format that suits you best: a classroom course, a tailor-made course at your own office, an online course or an e-learning. We have the right course and the right format for everyone. Because learning in the way that suits you best delivers the best results.
Personal attention and a pleasant atmosphere. Whether you take a course with us, at your office or on your own PC, we make sure you feel at home enough to push your boundaries.
New opportunities arise when you get moving. Stay sharp. Keep taking new steps. We encourage you to take the plunge and really go for it.
Discover something new. Build on your strengths. And choose your own path. We help you grow with training courses and learning formats that genuinely suit you.
We always think in terms of possibilities and win-win. And every day we work on new solutions for tomorrow. By offering training courses that leave you well prepared for the future.
We don't make empty promises. What we do offer is quality, knowledge and experience. A broad range of courses, made possible by our inspired staff and trainers.
We listen to what matters to you. To what you need. Because that is where our solution, our tailored approach, begins. Understanding each other properly and communicating clearly: that is what we believe in.
Taking a training course at Learnit means learning together. Together with your experienced trainer, together with your course group or together with your colleagues. And whether you take the training at home, at your office or at one of our training locations, we are always available to help you. To share our knowledge with you in a way that is genuinely useful to you. Getting further together through personal attention and understanding each other well; that is what we believe in.
Learning theory from a book that you can then hardly use in your work? Not at Learnit! Whichever training you take with us, you can put it to use at your workplace straight away. Because of the unique learning objectives you set together with the trainer at the start of the training. Because of the alternation between theory and (interactive) practical assignments. And by bringing the challenges you face in your daily work along to the training.
No suitable start date? Send us a date request. Then we will look together at how we can still meet your training needs.

J. van Hoof, ALLSAFE Group- Selection Interviews with STAR
“A small-scale training course with plenty of personal attention, so it was well tailored to everyone's learning needs. This course offers a good combination of theory that can be put into practice straight away and can also be applied well in practice afterwards.”

"Very interesting and instructive, even though the material on certain topics was already familiar. Every trainer comes up with new and different tips and tools. A good alternation of theory and exercises. Plenty of personal attention, thanks to the small group size. Professionally set up; well prepared, a pleasant intake interview beforehand and a handy reference work. I have gained a lot of knowledge. I am fully engaged with it and apply it daily. Great!"
J. Versluys, Mooiland - Conversation Techniques
“Very instructive course. The trainer is professional and takes the time for you.”
B. Pennings - De Volksbank - Motivational Interviewing
“A very worthwhile course given by a trainer with a passion for the subject, expertise and a sense of humour. The lessons were well structured, with clear explanations of the theory, and on the second day the theory was applied to practice, from which you also learn a great deal. The actor – who joins on the second day to apply the theory to practice – is also very friendly and very good. He has a thorough knowledge of the theory, which means you can practise it properly in real-life situations.”
B. Bock - Gemeente Amsterdam - Conducting Conversations course
“In a short time you get a good idea of what you can apply perfectly well yourself in conversations with residents or organisations. The trainer is presented in a “playful” way and remains engaging. Working with actors gives even better insight.”

J. van Hoof, ALLSAFE Group- Selection Interviews with STAR
"In this course I learned to analyse why conversations go the way they do. What does a conversation trigger in me, how do I then react, how would I like to react and how can I go about that? What might a conversation trigger in the other person and how can I deal with that? A lot of attention was paid to personal learning objectives. As a result, the content of the course matched what I wanted to achieve well."
- Conversation Techniques
“A good course that is tailored well to your learning objectives. The atmosphere is relaxed, and thanks to the small groups you can open up quickly!”
Silvia Vermeulen, Bartimeus- Conversation Techniques

This has a positive influence on and effect on customer friendliness, service to others and ultimately on overall cooperation and improved relationships."
M.J.H. van de Wetering, Advaita Yogacentrum- Conversation Techniques
“Interesting to pause and consider situations at work and to reflect on your behaviour and performance in a professional environment.”
A.G. Weisz, Gemeente Amsterdam Stadsdeel Centrum – Conversation Techniques
“The conversation exercises in this course really took me outside my comfort zone, and I learned a great deal from it as a result. After all, by exploring your limits you are able to grow. The trainer conveyed the material enthusiastically, kept the participants engaged and gave useful tips during the various exercises. The use of an actor for the conversation training was also very effective!”
R. Mentink - Bejo Zaden - Early Warning and Absence Interviews

E. Nolsen, Pactum- Selection Interviews with STAR
“I thought the course was good and, above all, useful and instructive. Even though I am not feeling great at the moment and am not quite myself, I still got a lot out of it. Most people dread role-plays, but once you are over the 'fear', doing a role-play is great fun and very instructive.”
M. Mulder, Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations (BZK) FMHaaglanden – Conversation Techniques
“This course is always instructive! They teach you how best to deal with certain situations!”

K.P.J.H. Rutte, PWC - Recruitment and Selection: Conducting Job Interviews
“I found the content of the course very good. The trainer addressed all the cases and went into each case individually. The feedback given was received very positively.”
J. Schuurman, Ministerie van Binnenlandse Zaken en Koninkrijksrelaties (BZK) FMHaaglanden- Advisory and Conversation Techniques
“The course was very manageable. A great many topics were covered in two days, with the needs of the group taken into account. Because the group was small, everyone had plenty of opportunity to take part. A hugely enthusiastic, inspiring and very versatile trainer. A good mix of theory and exercises. She explains things well and makes good use of telling examples. Every available resource was put to use (the room was covered in sheets). She is skilled with video and uses it convincingly to hold up a mirror to the participants.”
K. van Wieren - Conversation Techniques
“I thought it was a good session, instructive and at a good pace. Sufficient attention was paid to the topics we had asked about, and time was taken for them. The trainer was also good, calmly explaining the topics we wanted to discuss. Thank you, Marco Schmidt, Reintegration Work Supervisor”
Marco Schmidt, DZB Leiden - Conversation Techniques
“It is an instructive course. The information you receive suits you as a person. During the lessons this is further refined to what you need. After the course you become more aware of what you are doing and of what is said during a conversation.”
A. Kool, Luba Personele Diensten - Conversation Techniques
"A well-organised course with a method you can apply in practice. The clear explanations and general communication made it a pleasure to take this course."
- Selection interviews using STAR
"The content is instructive, but the trainer also makes it usable. With the course material alone you would certainly gain the knowledge, but to apply it you need guidance. Useful material that really benefits you and helps you find out how you come across and how you want to come across. Our trainer was excellent and listened to us in order to address our concerns."
- Conversation Techniques
“A very useful course that was well adapted to the wishes and needs of the group. Highly recommended!”
J. Meijer, Universitair Medisch Centrum Rotterdam (Erasmus MC) - Selection Interviews with STAR
"I like this kind of trainings, so I consider it should be done more often"
- Planning, performance and appraisal interviews
“Very well thought-out course. Theory, applying it yourself, role play (which elements work and which do not), role play again. So that all facets were covered through repetition. Training is repetition. The trainer created a very pleasant atmosphere and had perfect expertise.”
H. Hofland, P-Services HR Group- Conducting Performance and Appraisal Interviews
