Recruitment and Selection: Conducting Job Interviews course: average 8.5 from 13 reviews

“The recruitment and selection course is really worth recommending. You learn how to use the STAR method to get far more information out of your applicant than they would normally give, because applicants often give the answers to standard questions that you would like to hear. The art is to put situations to them and ask follow-up questions about those, which gives you a much better and more honest picture of your applicant. Great tips and tricks.”

The course is aimed at HR staff, managers and recruiters who interview candidates regularly. In an intake beforehand, your learning objectives are identified so that the programme matches your level.

What is the difference between the Conducting Job Interviews course and an assessment skills course?
This course focuses specifically on the job interview: how to prepare, structure, steer and interpret it. You learn questioning techniques such as criterion-based interviewing and the STAR(R) method, as well as how to read non-verbal signals. Assessment training is broader: there you work with psychological tests, aptitude measurements, role plays and simulations in order to assess candidates from several angles. Choose this course if you regularly conduct job interviews as an HR officer, manager or recruiter and want to improve your judgement within the interview format. Choose assessment training if you are responsible for more extensive selection procedures involving measurement instruments. The course is classroom-based, with plenty of practice and immediate feedback from the trainer.
What is the STAR(R) method and why does it work better than standard interview questions?
The STAR(R) method is a structured interview technique that stands for Situation, Task, Action, Result and Reflection. Instead of asking what someone would do ('How do you deal with conflict?'), you ask about concrete behaviour from the past ('Describe a situation in which you resolved a conflict with a colleague'). Past behaviour is the best predictor of future behaviour. That is the rationale behind this method. In the classroom course you learn to prepare STAR(R) questions, probe further on vague answers and use the reflection step to test whether a candidate learns from experience. You practise this in role plays with other participants and receive feedback from the trainer. That practice is what sets it apart from reading theory: you notice for yourself when an answer remains too superficial.
How do you deal with doubts about a candidate or gaps in a CV during a job interview?
Naming doubts and making them open to discussion is a skill that is addressed explicitly during the course. You learn to spot contradictions and gaps in a CV while preparing, and to raise these in the interview in a neutral way without putting the candidate on the defensive. In concrete terms, you practise with formulations such as 'I see that an earlier period has not been filled in, could you tell me a bit more about that?'. You also learn the difference between observation and interpretation: separating a factual observation from your own judgement. The course is classroom-based. You practise these situations in role plays with feedback from the trainer, so that you can apply the technique in practice straight away.
