Your bookkeeping in order, without the headache. In this practical course you set up the basis of your administration together with an experienced trainer. Using your own practical examples you apply what you have learned straight away and get a grip on your figures.

Description

For many entrepreneurs, bookkeeping is a necessary evil: not the most enjoyable job, but one of the most important. In this course you set up your bookkeeping together with an experienced trainer and get to know the elements that matter for starting entrepreneurs.

You will work with the most commonly used and simplest bookkeeping methods and become familiar with widely used online accounting packages. Using practical cases, you practise with the material straight away, so that you can apply what you have learned to your own administration immediately. You may bring your own practical examples or email them to Learnit in advance, so that the course fits your situation as closely as possible.

There is ample time during the course to ask questions and discuss your own cases. This gives you a clear, practical overview of your finances and shows you how to keep your own books independently.

Topics

  • Financial terms
  • Setting up a bookkeeping system
  • Creditors and debtors
  • Drawing up an opening balance sheet
  • Drawing up a financial journal
  • Recording financial transactions
  • Working with a general ledger
  • Working with VAT
  • Preparing reports for the VAT return
  • Taxes and tax returns
  • Payroll Administration
  • Depreciating assets
  • Loans and interest
  • Checks and reconciliations

Result

After this course you will independently set up clear bookkeeping for your business. You understand the most important financial terms and know how to set up an administration, draw up an opening balance sheet and record financial facts correctly in a general ledger.

You will work confidently with accounts payable and receivable, process VAT and draw up the reports you need for your tax return. You will also know how to deal with depreciation, loans and interest, and how payroll administration and tax returns work.

You will know the most common bookkeeping programmes and which method suits your situation. This gives you a grip on your figures and quick insight into how your business is doing financially.

Target audience

This course is ideally suited to entrepreneurs and employees who want to gain a deeper understanding of the financial and administrative process. Whether you have just started your own business, want to keep your own accounts as a freelancer or take on supporting bookkeeping tasks within an organisation: you will get to grips with the basics.

No prior knowledge is required. A calculator and a healthy dose of curiosity about figures are enough to get started.

Teaching method

During the course you put the theory into practice straight away using recognisable real-life cases, so that you really master the material. There is plenty of personal attention and room for your own questions. Our experienced trainers make sure you can apply what you have learnt directly in your own work situation.

It is useful and instructive to bring your own practical examples, so that we can tailor the learning process to them. Preferably let Learnit know about these before the course. You can bring your own files on a USB stick or email them to us in advance.

Prior knowledge

You need no prior knowledge to start this course. Do you already have some experience with administration or figures? That is a bonus, but not a requirement. You simply start with the basics and build on from there.

Comments

You can bring your own practical examples to the course, for example on a USB stick. Emailing is also fine: send your files to Learnit in advance and the trainer can work with them specifically.

In-company

Would you like to organise this training for a whole group or several groups? This can be cost-effective. For example, we can tailor the content entirely to your organisation, and training a whole group is also cheaper.

Are you looking at large numbers of participants or a complete academy? That involves a great deal. Consider planning and communication, for example, or identifying and agreeing the objectives and content of the training. Or differences in level, feedback mechanisms and safeguarding. Fortunately, Learnit has extensive experience in this field (more than 25 years) and we are happy to help you through this process.

Language

The training is given in Dutch as standard. The trainer has a good command of English. English-language course material can be used. With a minimum enrolment of 3 participants, the training can also be given entirely in English.

  • "I was pleasantly surprised by the course. What I have learned is very applicable to my working situation. To be honest, I had expected the course to be rather dull, especially for someone who is not really interested in bookkeeping as such. This course proved the opposite."

  • "Bookkeeping? A necessary activity for every entrepreneur. For me, not the most fascinating subject matter. Thanks to the clear explanations and full commitment of the trainer, who managed to create a lively collaboration among the participants (and maintain it over three days) and to engage every participant effectively, all my expectations were exceeded. The good location and catering also deserve a mention. All in all: three instructive, enjoyable course days."

    Frequently asked questions

No prior knowledge is required for the Bookkeeping for Beginners course. The course is designed for beginners and covers all the basic concepts from scratch, such as setting up an administration, working with accounts receivable and payable, VAT returns and the general ledger. During the course you build up a working set of accounts step by step, using your own practical examples.

In the Bookkeeping for Beginners course you learn the basics of setting up a complete set of accounts. Topics include financial terminology, debtors and creditors, drawing up an opening balance sheet and financial journal, working with the general ledger, VAT returns, payroll administration, depreciation, loans and interest. You practise straight away with recognisable real-life cases, so that you apply the material immediately in your own work situation.

The Bookkeeping for Beginners course is intended for entrepreneurs and employees who want to gain a deeper understanding of the financial and administrative process. No prior knowledge is required. During the course you learn how to set up an administration, work with VAT, keep a general ledger and produce reports. Ideal if you are just starting out as an entrepreneur or have just become responsible for the bookkeeping.

The Bookkeeping for Beginners course is taught in a classroom setting in a small group. You work straight away with recognisable practical cases and may bring your own records or files to practise with. The experienced trainer offers plenty of personal attention, so you can apply what you learn immediately in your own working situation.

Yes, you can bring your own practical examples and files to the Bookkeeping for Beginners course. Send your documents to Learnit by e-mail in advance or bring them along on a USB stick. During the classroom training you work with your own input, so that what you learn ties in directly with your own working situation and you apply the material straight away.

A classroom course makes more sense if you want to set up your own records and need targeted feedback on them. At Learnit, in a small group with an experienced trainer. You work on the basis of your own figures and cases, and you can ask questions straight away about situations such as VAT returns, debtor management or drawing up an opening balance sheet. Online self-study is cheaper and more flexible, but lacks that personal check: you don't know whether your journal entries or ledger structure are correct. Choose the classroom course if you want working knowledge quickly that you can apply directly in your own bookkeeping. Choose self-study if you mainly want to pick up general theory without guidance on your own records.

The Bookkeeping for Beginners course focuses on the accounting principles themselves, not on operating one specific software package. You learn concepts such as debit and credit, drawing up an opening balance sheet, keeping a general ledger, VAT returns and depreciation. During the course the trainers do introduce commonly used bookkeeping methods and programmes, but the focus is on understanding the financial and administrative process. A package-specific course (Exact or Moneybird, for example) assumes that you already know the underlying bookkeeping logic and mainly teaches you which buttons to press. Take this course if you want to understand what you are recording and why; choose a package-specific course if you have mastered the theory and simply want to work more efficiently in a particular tool. This course is taught in a classroom setting.

You will immediately be able to set up and maintain the basics of your own bookkeeping. You will have practised setting up an administration, processing accounts payable and receivable, recording financial transactions in the general ledger, VAT returns and simple reporting. Because you work with your own practical examples during the course (which you can submit in advance), you apply what you learn directly to your own situation. The course is classroom-based. For more complex elements such as payroll administration, depreciation of assets and loans with interest, the following applies: you will master the principles, but for implementation in a larger company more experience or the guidance of an accountant is usual.

The Bookkeeping for Beginners course suits start-up entrepreneurs, freelancers and employees without a financial background who want to get to grips with their own administration. In classroom sessions you learn the basics: opening balance sheet, general ledger, accounts receivable/payable, VAT returns, depreciation and payroll administration. The course is suitable if you want to do your own bookkeeping or better understand the figures from your accountant. The course falls short if you already have experience with double-entry bookkeeping and are looking for more depth in annual accounts, tax advice or consolidation. A follow-up course would then be more appropriate. For anyone who specifically wants to learn one software package (such as Exact, Moneybird or e-Boekhouden), a package-oriented course makes more sense. The course includes course materials and a certificate of participation.

Online tutorials explain individual concepts: what a general ledger is, how VAT works, how to enter an invoice. What they don't do is work through your own situation. In this classroom course you use your own accounts as the starting point. Step by step you set up a working set of books, from opening balance sheet to VAT return, and you receive direct feedback from an experienced trainer on the choices you make. That is the difference with self-study: at the end you not only know how it works in theory, but also whether your own accounts are correct. Practical cases from other participants provide extra insight into situations you have not yet come across yourself. Course materials are included.

Learnit's Bookkeeping for Beginners course is a short, practical classroom course that teaches you the basics of keeping your own or a small administration. You work with concepts such as the general ledger, opening balance sheet, journal entries, VAT returns and depreciation, applied to your own situation. A formal qualification as a bookkeeper or assistant accountant (such as PDB, MBA or an mbo/hbo programme) takes months to years, leads to a recognised diploma and is aimed at keeping the books for third parties. This course does not lead to a professional diploma. Choose Learnit if, as an entrepreneur or employee, you want to understand the financial and administrative processes and carry them out yourself. If you want to become a bookkeeper professionally, a multi-year programme is the right route.
