A correct income tax return calls for up-to-date knowledge of tax credits, deductible items and boxes. In this course you get to grips with income tax, including the consequences of the Wet VBAR for freelancers and changes in personal or income circumstances.

Description

In this Income Tax course you will gain insight into all the aspects that matter for filing a correct tax return. You will learn how tax credits work and at which rate you calculate deductible items and annuities. You will also gain a clear understanding of the effect that changes in income or personal circumstances have on the tax return.

You will work with taxable income and the various boxes, tax partnership and the distinction between resident and non-resident tax liability. In addition, profit from business activities, entrepreneur's allowance and income tax for self-employed professionals are covered, including the consequences of the Wet VBAR. You will complete the course with knowledge of the current legislation and regulations and the audit methods used by the Dutch Tax Administration.

Topics

The following topics are covered during this Income Tax course:

  • Income tax return and assessment
  • The relationship between payroll tax and income tax
  • Resident or non-resident tax liability
  • Tax partnership
  • Taxable income and the boxes of the income tax system
  • Tax credits
  • Income tax deductions, such as owner-occupied home deductions and travel allowance
  • Annuities and income tax
  • Profit from business activities and entrepreneur's allowance
  • Income tax for freelancers and the consequences of the Wet VBAR
  • Audit methods of the Dutch Tax Administration
  • Current legislation and regulations on income tax

Result

After this course you will file a correct income tax return and recognise how it relates to payroll tax. You will know when someone is a resident or non-resident taxpayer and how to assess tax partnership.

You correctly process changes in income or personal circumstances in the tax return and apply the right tax credits and deductions, including owner-occupied home, travel deduction and annuities. You understand how profit from business activities and the entrepreneur's allowance work through into the return, and you know the tax consequences of the Wet VBAR for self-employed workers. You are up to date with current income tax legislation and regulations and answer questions from colleagues and clients about income tax with confidence.

Target audience

Do you work at an accountancy or administration firm and prepare income tax returns as well as annual accounts? Then this course is exactly what you are looking for. Payroll administrators, financial administrators and other finance professionals responsible for personnel administration and payroll tax returns will also get a great deal out of it.

Teaching method

During this Income Tax course you work in a small group with an experienced trainer from the field. Theory and practice alternate: you receive clear explanations of the current legislation and regulations and then get straight to work with recognisable examples and practice cases from your own work.

You discuss situations you encounter in your day-to-day practice, such as tax credits, deductions, tax partnership and the consequences of the Wet VBAR for self-employed workers. Questions from your own work are welcome and are dealt with straight away. This way you take away knowledge you can apply the very next working day.

You receive course material that you can also use as a reference work after the course. Afterwards you receive a certificate of participation.

Prior knowledge

No specific prior knowledge is required for this course. It is helpful, however, if your work already involves salary, payroll or financial administration. That way you will recognise the terminology more quickly and can link the material directly to your day-to-day practice.

Who is the Income Tax course suitable for?
The Income Tax course is intended for staff at accountancy and administration firms who, alongside the financial statements, also prepare income tax returns. Payroll administrators, financial administrators and finance professionals responsible for payroll tax returns also take this course. You are taught in a classroom setting and learn all about current legislation and regulations, deductions, boxes and tax credits.
Which topics are covered in the Income Tax course?
The Income Tax course covers all the elements of a correct tax return: the box system, tax credits, deductions (such as the owner-occupied home and the travel deduction), annuities, tax partnership and resident versus non-resident tax liability. In addition you cover profit from business activities, the entrepreneur's allowance, the consequences of the Wet VBAR for self-employed professionals and the audit methods of the Dutch Tax Administration. You finish with current legislation and regulations.
Do you receive a certificate after the Income Tax course?
Yes, on completing the Income Tax course you receive a certificate of participation. This certificate shows that you have attended the classroom course and have knowledge of tax returns, tax credits, deductions, tax partnership and current legislation and regulations. You can use the certificate for your CPD portfolio or as evidence for your employer and clients.
What prior knowledge do you need for the Income Tax course?
For the Income Tax course you need basic knowledge of tax concepts and experience with payroll or financial administration. The course is designed for staff at accountancy and administration firms, payroll administrators and finance professionals who already work with tax returns. No specific prior education is required, but practical experience with payroll taxes or financial statements will help you to apply the material to best effect.
Is the Income Tax course classroom-based or online?
You take the Income Tax course in a classroom setting in a small group. You are taught by an experienced trainer, so you can ask questions straight away and put practical situations to them. The classroom format ensures interaction with fellow participants and the trainer, which helps you grasp current legislation and regulations and complex deductions better than through self-study.
What is the difference between the Income Tax course and a Payroll Taxes course, and when do you choose which?
The Income Tax course focuses on income tax returns for private individuals, business owners and self-employed people. You learn to work with boxes, tax credits, deductible items (such as owner-occupied homes and travel deductions), annuities, tax partnership and profit from business activities. A Payroll Taxes course deals with what the employer withholds and remits: wage tax, national insurance contributions and employee insurance contributions. Choose Income Tax if you prepare income tax returns at an accountancy or administration firm, or if, as a payroll administrator, you receive questions about employees' private tax returns. Choose Payroll Taxes if you handle the payroll administration and the payroll tax return. The Income Tax course covers the relationship between wage tax and income tax explicitly, plus current changes such as the VBAR Act for self-employed people.
What does the Income Tax course at Learnit give you that you won't learn from an online tax course or the Belastingdienst's explanatory notes?
A general online course or the explanatory notes to the tax return software will explain the rules, but they do not address your specific client situations. In the classroom Income Tax course, you work with an experienced trainer on practical situations you encounter at an accountancy or administration firm. Topics include tax partnership, the box system, tax credits, owner-occupied home deductions, annuities, profit from business activities and the consequences of the Wet VBAR for self-employed workers. You can ask questions about your own cases and receive immediate feedback. The Tax Authority's audit methods and the difference between resident and non-resident tax liability are also covered. The course focuses on being able to correctly prepare and substantiate a tax return for clients or colleagues.
How up to date is the content of the Income Tax course, and how do you deal with annual changes in legislation?
The Income Tax course is updated annually on the basis of the most recent legislation and regulations. This means that the current rates, tax credits, box 1 brackets, the notional return in box 3 and the current entrepreneur's allowance are covered as they apply at the time of the course. Recent developments are also addressed, for example the consequences of the VBAR Act for self-employed workers and changes to deductions relating to the owner-occupied home. This is an important difference from a static online course or an outdated handbook: you are taught in a classroom by a trainer who explains the changes and answers your questions about specific practical situations. Useful if you prepare tax returns in your work and want to be sure you are working with the rules for this tax year.
After the Income Tax course, will I be able to prepare tax returns independently for clients of an accountancy firm, or do I need more than that?
After this course you will be able to correctly complete a standard income tax return, including boxes 1, 2 and 3, tax credits, owner-occupied home deductions, travel allowance and annuities. You will also learn to apply profit from business activities and the entrepreneur's allowance, and the consequences of the Wet VBAR for self-employed professionals. This makes you deployable for standard private tax returns and straightforward income tax entrepreneurs. For more complex cases. Think of international situations, wealth planning, or business succession. Further specialist tax knowledge is required. The course is aimed primarily at staff at accountancy and administration firms, payroll administrators and financial administrators who prepare income tax returns alongside their regular work. Under the guidance of an experienced colleague, you can start working on client files immediately after the course.
Is the Income Tax course also useful if I mainly want to understand my own tax return better, or is it really intended for professionals?
The course is designed for professionals: staff at accountancy and administration firms, payroll and financial administrators and finance professionals who prepare tax returns for clients or colleagues. The pace, the depth and topics such as profit from business activities, the entrepreneur's allowance, tax partnership and the consequences of the Wet VBAR for self-employed professionals go further than what you need for your own tax return. Just want to understand your private tax return better? Then the guidance notes from the Dutch Tax Administration or a short online module will be quicker and cheaper. The classroom course only pays off if you prepare tax returns for others or need to answer tax questions from clients and colleagues correctly.
Does the Income Tax course also cover the tax consequences of the Wet VBAR for self-employed workers, and how deeply do you go into this?
Yes, the Wet VBAR (Verduidelijking Beoordeling Arbeidsrelaties) is covered explicitly as part of the block on income tax for self-employed professionals. You learn what the consequences are for the tax returns of the self-employed and what this means for clients who work with self-employed professionals. The treatment is practical: how do you process profit from business activities, which entrepreneur's allowance applies, and what does the Dutch Tax Administration look at during audits. The course lasts and, classroom-based. For a deeper look at the employment law aspects of the Wet VBAR (model agreements, enforcement against false self-employment), a separate legal course is more suitable. Here the focus is on the tax treatment in the income tax return.
How much does the Income Tax course cost and how long does it take?
