As an employer, you are required to keep a correct payroll administration from your first employee onwards. In this course you get to grips with wage calculations, social security contributions, allowances and the current rules of the Dutch Tax Administration.

Description

As an employer you are required to keep a correct payroll administration from your very first employee onwards. In this course you get to grips with every aspect involved.

On the first day you work on the basics: you learn how to calculate a salary, which administrative obligations your payroll administration must meet and how to set up your payroll records correctly using a practical step-by-step plan. Expense allowances, benefits in kind and wages in kind are also covered.

The second day focuses on deductions, levies and social security contributions, including employee insurance contributions, the Health Insurance Act (Zvw) and the Work and Income (Capacity for Work) Act (WIA). You will work with the permitted allowances and benefits in kind under the work-related costs scheme, and you will learn how the Belastingdienst checks these. On both course days there is ample room to ask your own questions.

You will be given a handy step-by-step plan that you can put to use straight away at your own workplace. There is plenty of scope to ask questions and to bring in your own cases. On completion you will receive a certificate of participation.

Prior knowledge

Who is the Payroll Administration course suitable for and what prior knowledge do you need?
The Payroll Administration course is suitable for entrepreneurs, finance staff, HR staff and payroll administrators who are responsible for payroll administration and the payroll tax return. No specific prior knowledge is required. It is useful, however, if you have an affinity with figures and a basic knowledge of administrative processes. During the course you build up complete knowledge from the ground up.
Do you receive a certificate after the Payroll Administration course?
Yes, on completing the classroom-based Payroll Administration course you will receive a certificate of participation. This certificate shows that you attended both course days and have mastered the topics covered, such as gross-to-net calculations, payroll taxes, employee insurance contributions (Zvw, WIA) and allowances. It is a valuable addition to your CV for roles in HR, finance or payroll administration.
What will you learn on days 1 and 2 of the Payroll Administration course?
On day 1 you learn how to set up a correct payroll administration using a practical step-by-step plan, and how to make a gross-to-net calculation. Day 2 focuses on deductions, levies, social security contributions (Zvw, WIA/WGA), employee insurance contributions, wage cost benefits and the permitted allowances and benefits in kind. You also learn how the Belastingdienst checks these.
Is the Payroll Administration course taught in a classroom or online?
The Payroll Administration course is taught in the classroom, spread over two consecutive days. You follow the course in a small group, which leaves plenty of room to ask questions and discuss practical situations from your own work. The classroom set-up ensures direct interaction with the trainer and fellow participants, so you can immediately practise calculation examples, gross-to-net calculations and the step-by-step plan.
What course materials do you receive with the Payroll Administration course?
With the Payroll Administration course you receive a complete course book with theory, practical examples and a step-by-step plan for setting up your payroll administration correctly. You also work through exercises on gross-to-net calculations, deductions and allowances. During both course days there is ample opportunity to put your own practical questions to the experienced trainer.
What is the difference between Learnit's Payroll Administration course and self-study using the Belastingdienst manuals?
Self-study using the Belastingdienst's Handboek Loonheffingen is free, but you work your way through hundreds of pages of legislation on your own. Learnit's Payroll Administration course You are taught in a classroom setting by an experienced trainer and work with practical examples, including a step-by-step plan for setting up your payroll records and exercises with gross-to-net calculations. Topics such as employee insurance contributions, WIA, Zvw, payroll tax, payroll tax reductions and wage cost benefits are covered in a structured way. You can ask questions about your own situation straight away. Choose self-study if you only need to look something up occasionally; choose the course if you are responsible for the payroll administration and need a workable basis in a short space of time.
How do I know whether this course is enough, or whether I would be better off taking a full payroll administrator programme?
That depends on your role and ambitions. Learnit's Payroll Administration course gives you the basis to set up a payroll administration independently, make gross-net calculations and prepare the payroll tax return. That is enough for business owners, HR staff and finance staff who manage the payroll of a single company. If you want to work as a payroll administrator by profession for several clients, for example at an accountancy firm, a multi-year vocational programme such as PDL or VPS makes more sense. Those go deeper into the application of collective labour agreements, complex case work and employment law. Not sure? Many participants take this course first to see whether the field suits them, before investing in a longer programme.
How up to date is the content of the Payroll Administration course, given the annual changes to tax and social security legislation?
The Payroll Administration course is updated every year to reflect changes to payroll tax, employee insurance contributions, the WIA, the Zvw and the system of allowances and benefits in kind (including the work-related costs scheme). Day 2 includes a standing item, 'Current developments', in which the trainer covers recent legislative changes and changes to rates and threshold amounts. As a result, you will not be given figures from an out-of-date financial year, but the rules and amounts that apply at that moment. Compared with self-study using online manuals, this is an advantage: you receive the explanation in context and can ask questions about your own situation straight away. Do bear in mind that after the course you remain responsible for keeping up with future changes yourself, for example through newsletters from the Belastingdienst.
After this course, can I run the payroll administration of a small company independently, or will I also need software and support?
After Learnit's Payroll Administration course (classroom), you will have the knowledge to run the payroll of a small employer in substance: calculating gross to net, determining withholding obligations, applying employee insurance and Zvw contributions, and preparing payroll tax returns. To carry this out in practice, you will also need payroll software (for example Nmbrs, Loket, Visma or another package); this is not covered in the course. You will learn which data you need to record where, and how to check the outcomes produced by the software. For complex situations, such as the 30% ruling, international employment contracts or specific collective agreement (CAO) provisions, it remains sensible to consult a payroll adviser or accountant. For regular payroll administration with one to a few dozen employees, the course provides a workable basis.
What is the difference between this Payroll Administration course and a payroll accounting course or a PDL programme?
Learnit's Payroll Administration course teaches you the practical basics in a short time: gross-to-net calculations, deductions, employee insurance contributions, the Health Insurance Act, the WIA, allowances and benefits in kind, and setting up a correct payroll administration using a step-by-step plan. A PDL programme (Practical Diploma in Payroll Administration) is a multi-day course lasting several months with a nationally recognised examination, and goes into greater depth on tax legislation and the application of collective labour agreements. Choose this course if you want to get to grips quickly and practically with the payroll administration of a (small) company. Choose PDL if you need a formal diploma or want to work as a payroll administrator at larger organisations with complex collective labour agreements.
How does this Payroll Administration course compare with an in-company programme if our entire HR team needs to be brought up to speed?
Learnit's scheduled Payroll Administration course is taught in the classroom with a fixed content covering salary calculation, deductions, social security contributions (Zvw, WIA/WGA) and allowances. This is the logical choice for 1 to 3 participants, or if you would like your team members to exchange ideas with people from other organisations. From roughly 4 to 6 participants onwards, an in-company programme often becomes more attractive: you can then tailor the content to your own collective labour agreement, software and internal processes, and have the course delivered on site. The learning objectives stay the same, but examples and case work are set up specifically for your organisation. For a mixed team (HR and finance), the scheduled course remains perfectly suitable, because both groups are explicitly catered for in the programme.
What does the Payroll Administration course cost and how long does it take?

You can find the current price at the top right of this course page, along with the schedule, location and delivery format. For in-company or bespoke courses we are happy to provide a quotation on request.
