You work with people who sometimes display difficult behaviour due to a behavioural disorder or mental health problems. In this course you learn to recognise that behaviour and respond to it calmly and clearly.
In your work, you come into contact with people who display unusual or difficult behaviour. You are expected to address them about the nuisance they cause, even when communication is awkward or accompanied by verbal aggression. That demands something of your attitude, your choice of words and your timing.
In this course you learn to better recognise behaviour arising from a disorder or psychological problems. You are given tools to convey your message clearly, with respect and equality as the starting point. Theory alternates with practice: in a safe atmosphere you work with role plays and case studies from your own practice.
You will go home with more insight into why people react the way they do, and with concrete techniques for holding your own in difficult conversations.
After this course, you will recognise signs of psychological disorders and addiction problems more quickly. You will know how to address someone displaying problem behaviour in a calm and respectful way, even when verbal aggression is involved. You communicate clearly, maintain your own boundaries and know what works (and what doesn't) in difficult situations.
This course is suitable for professionals who deal with people displaying deviant behaviour in their work and who have to address it. Think of enforcement officers, special investigating officers, ambulance staff, reception staff, education staff and employees at local authorities and other government bodies.
The course alternates between experiencing, experimenting with behaviour and techniques, reflecting and short pieces of theory. As a result, the programme suits different learning styles. You practise actively with role plays and case studies, so you notice what new behaviour delivers in practice.
The trainer invites you to reflect continuously and to connect the material to your own work. In this way you increase your knowledge and, at the same time, the likelihood that you will actually apply what you have learned.
No prior knowledge is required. Your own work experience and practical situations form the starting point.
The content may vary slightly from group to group, depending on the prior knowledge and learning objectives of the participants. During the intake, we establish what you want to learn.
The training is given in Dutch as standard. The trainer has a good command of English. English-language course material can be used. With a minimum enrolment of 3 participants, the training can also be given entirely in English.

Psychotic behaviour is often characterised by a disturbed contact with reality. Someone may see, hear or believe things that are not there, come across as confused, talk incoherently or react with strong distrust. Sometimes there is also extreme fear or agitation. In the course you learn to recognise these signals and to respond to them calmly.
Start calmly, at eye level and without an accusatory tone. State specifically which behaviour you observe and what effect it has, and be clear about what you expect. Keep your choice of words simple and give the other person time to respond. Respect and equality matter, but you may also be clear and decisive about boundaries.
In the case of verbal aggression, it is important to stay calm yourself and not to adopt the same tone. Name the behaviour, state what effect it has on you and what you need in order to continue the conversation. Keep your distance, look after your own safety and know when it is better to break off a conversation. In the course you practise this in concrete terms.
Behaviour is rarely black and white. What is seen as deviant depends on context, culture and the extent to which someone hinders themselves or others. In the case of a psychological disorder, the behaviour is often long-lasting, far-reaching and difficult for the person to influence themselves. In the course you are given tools to make this distinction more effectively in your work.
Dealing with problem behaviour demands a lot of you. It helps to be aware of your own reaction patterns, to indicate your limits in good time and to discuss experiences afterwards with colleagues. A short break or stepping back for a moment can already make a difference. During the course we consider your own attitude and how to remain resilient.
