Description

In the Power BI Advanced course you carry on where the basics course stops. You will delve into DAX functions, the heart of Power BI, and discover how to use these formulas to perform complex calculations on your data. Using demonstrations and exercises you will work from simple formulas towards advanced DAX constructions.

You will learn to import, combine and enrich data from various file types using the Power Query Editor. You will also build a calendar table as the core of your data model, work with time intelligence functions and apply parameters in both DAX formulas and the Query Editor. In addition, you will explore the report view in more depth, working with bookmarks, slicer synchronisation, themes, templates for your own house style and extensive visuals from the Marketplace.

The course is intensive and practical in its set-up. Theory and practice alternate, you work on a course laptop or your own laptop with Microsoft Power BI and Microsoft Excel, and there is plenty of scope to practise with examples from your own working practice.

The Power BI Advanced course covers the following topics:

  • A brief recap of the basic principles of Power BI: making data insightful, Power Query Editor and Power BI Desktop and Online
  • Importing data sources via the Query Editor and working with a dynamic file location using parameters
  • Structuring data in the Query Editor and in the Data View
  • Activating and deactivating relationships and extending data
  • DAX functions and formula tables, with function categories and calculated columns using RELATED and SUMX
  • The calendar table as the core of the data model, including a dynamic DAX calendar and Time Intelligence functions
  • Extending the data model with additional tables and relationships
  • Working in the report view: bookmarks, slicer synchronisation, themes, your own templates and house style, interactions between visuals, locking objects and adding visuals from the AppSource
  • Parameter tables and what-if parameters
  • Advanced DAX functions and formulas, including CALCULATE and the use of parameters in DAX and in the Query Editor

After completing the Power BI Advanced course you will know how to import, combine and enrich data in Power BI, you will be able to import data from various external sources, you will be able to use data analysis to establish complex connections and relationships between data, you will be able to explain the difference between measures and calculated columns, you will effortlessly apply advanced calculation formulas to your data using DAX, you will know the possibilities of the report view and data visualisation in Power BI, you will be able to create data tables effectively, you will be able to apply conditional formatting and visualisations to your tables, you will be able to work with your own templates, and you will be able to work with the DAX calendar and Time Intelligence functions.

The Power BI Advanced course is intended for finance professionals and data analysts who already work with Microsoft Power BI and want to get more out of the programme. Teaching method

In the Power BI Advanced course you will learn, using examples from your daily practice and a practical workbook, how to get even more out of your reports and dashboards with Power BI. Theory and practice alternate and you put what you have learned straight into practice on one of the course laptops. There is plenty of scope to practise with Power BI and to ask your trainer questions.

In this course you will work with Microsoft Power BI Desktop and Microsoft Excel.

Prior knowledge

You have experience with the basic principles of Power BI, for example through our Power BI Basics course. You know how to import data, build simple reports and work with the Power Query Editor. Knowledge of Excel is an advantage; experience with DAX is not required.

Can I cancel free of charge?

Yes. Up to four weeks before the first day of the course you can cancel free of charge, without giving a reason. You then receive a credit note or, if you have already paid, a refund. If you cancel later, you pay part of the course fee: 25% between four and two weeks before the start, 75% in the two weeks before it and 100% in the final week. Moving to another start date is free of charge up to two weeks before the start, after that 50%. Sending a colleague in your place is always possible. Read the cancellation terms.

What prior knowledge do you need for the Power BI Advanced course?
For the Power BI Advanced course you need a basic knowledge of Power BI. You already work with Power BI Desktop, know the Power Query Editor and have created reports before. If you have taken the Power BI Basics course or gained comparable experience in practice, you will fit in well. Experience with Excel and data analysis is an advantage.

What is the difference between Learnit's Power BI Advanced course and an online DAX course that I can follow myself?
An online self-study DAX course is cheaper and can be followed at your own pace, but you only work on pre-designed examples. Learnit's Power BI Advanced course is taught in a classroom setting. You work on a course laptop or your own laptop with a trainer present, which gives three differences compared with self-study: 1. You can bring in your own reports and datasets from your day-to-day practice and ask questions about them straight away. 2. Tricky DAX formulas such as CALCULATE, RELATED, SUMX and Time Intelligence functions are demonstrated and explained live at the moment you get stuck. 3. Theory and practice alternate at a steady pace, so that you work through all of the material. Choose self-study if you mainly want to go deeper at moments that suit you. Choose the classroom advanced course if you want to make structured progress with DAX and data modelling in a short space of time.
When should I choose the Power BI Advanced course and when is a tailored in-company programme a better option?
Learnit's classroom-based Power BI Advanced course You choose this if you want to take part individually or with one or two colleagues, and your learning objective matches the standard programme: DAX functions such as CALCULATE, RELATED and SUMX, calendar tables, time intelligence, parameters and advanced report view. You work on a course laptop or your own laptop with Microsoft Power BI and Excel, in a small group with room for your own questions. An in-company course makes more sense from around four participants, or when you want to work with specific company data, your own data sources or a different scope. If you do not need advanced course level, the Power BI Basics course is a better fit. Unsure about your level? Then the scheduled course is a safe choice: the programme starts with a brief recap of the basic principles.
How quickly after the Power BI Advanced course can I actually apply the DAX formulas and calendar table in my own reports?
You apply what you learn straight away. During the classroom course you work on a course laptop or your own laptop with the same kind of data and reports you come across every day, so you practise immediately with CALCULATE, SUMX, RELATED and the DAX calendar. Most participants apply the basic DAX formulas and time intelligence functions in their own working environment within a week of the course. More complex constructions, such as what-if parameters or a fully custom calendar table with dynamic periods, usually require two to four weeks of practical experience. You take home a practical workbook in which all the formulas covered are worked out step by step, so you can refer back to the examples. The course is intended for users who already use Power BI for management reporting.
What does the Power BI Advanced course give me that I cannot get from YouTube tutorials or the Microsoft Learn documentation?
YouTube and Microsoft Learn are fine for individual explanations of a single DAX function or a single visual. What you miss there is the bigger picture. In Learnit's Power BI Advanced course (classroom-based) you work in a continuous practical model in which importing, modelling with relationships, a DAX calendar table, Time Intelligence functions and CALCULATE all connect. You get direct feedback from a trainer on your own formulas, instead of guessing why a measure returns the wrong total. Topics that are rarely covered together in separate tutorials are also included. Such as What if parameters, bookmarks, slicer synchronisation and templates for your house style. All in a single programme. So the difference lies not in the information itself, but in the guided build-up and the opportunity to put your own reporting question to a trainer.
Is the Power BI Advanced course also useful if I do not work in a financial role, but in operations or marketing, for example?
Yes. Although the course description names financial professionals as the primary target group, the topics are more broadly applicable. DAX functions, calendar tables, time intelligence, CALCULATE, parameters and advanced visuals work the same way, regardless of whether you are analysing revenue figures, production data, campaign results or logistics KPIs. The examples in the course come from financial reporting, but the techniques are domain-independent. What does matter: you need to have a command of the basics of Power BI Desktop and Power Query, because we go into depth straight away. Do you work in operations or marketing and build your own reports with multiple data sources and complex calculations? Then the material is a good fit. If you only work with standard dashboards built by others, Power BI Basics is a more logical starting point.
How does the Power BI Advanced course relate to the Power BI Basics course? Do I need to have taken that one first?
Learnit's Power BI Advanced course builds on the basic principles and goes into depth on DAX functions, data modelling and advanced reporting. You do not necessarily have to have taken Learnit's Power BI basics course, but you do need practical working experience with Power BI Desktop: you should be able to load data via Power Query independently, create relationships between tables and build simple visuals. The advanced course starts with a brief recap of the basics and then moves quickly on to CALCULATE, SUMX, RELATED, calendar tables and Time Intelligence. Not sure about your level? Then the basics course (or first spending a few months building in Power BI yourself) is a logical intermediate step. The advanced course runs as a classroom course.
