Your team only really functions when the mutual relationships are right, the roles are clear and you stay on course together. In this course you gain the models and tools to achieve that.

Description

You will work with four leading models for team effectiveness: Tuckman's stages of group development, Lencioni's five dysfunctions, Belbin's team roles and Hackman's basic conditions for successful teams. For each model you learn what it means for your team and how to apply it straight away.

The course is strongly practically oriented. You analyse your own team, recognise patterns that block collaboration and practise techniques for clear communication and for raising tensions openly. Your own experience in practice is the starting point for the exercises.

You finish with a concrete action plan for your own team. That way you know exactly which steps you are going to take back in the workplace to increase effectiveness.

Topics

  • Introduction to team effectiveness and what really makes a team perform
  • Tuckman's stages: forming, storming, norming, performing and adjourning
  • Lencioni's five dysfunctions of a team
  • Belbin's team roles and building a balanced team
  • Hackman's five basic conditions for effective teams
  • Effective communication within teams
  • Conflict management and opening up discussion about tensions
  • Formulating clear and achievable team goals
  • Keeping motivation and involvement high
  • Drawing up a personal action plan for your own team

Result

After this course you can recognise the stage your team is in and know which interventions are appropriate. You can analyse the roles within your team, identify and address dysfunctions, and create the conditions in which team members can come into their own. You communicate more clearly, hold difficult conversations sooner and set goals your team is willing to commit to. You leave with a concrete action plan for your own working situation.

Target audience

The course is intended for team leaders, supervisors, project and production managers, HR professionals and other managers who are responsible for how a team functions. Whether you lead a permanent team or guide temporary project teams, you will gain the models and skills to take collaboration and results to a higher level.

Teaching method

The course is interactive and practice-oriented. You alternate theory with exercises, case studies and reflection on your own team. You work in a small group, so there is room for depth and personal questions. The experienced trainer switches between explanation, examples and practice moments, and gives you targeted feedback on the way you apply the models.

Prior knowledge

No specific prior knowledge is required. Experience in leading or guiding a team will help you link the material directly to your own practice.

In-company

Would you like to organise this training for a whole group or several groups? This can be cost-effective. For example, we can tailor the content entirely to your organisation, and training a whole group is also cheaper.

Are you looking at large numbers of participants or a complete academy? That involves a great deal. Consider planning and communication, for example, or identifying and agreeing the objectives and content of the training. Or differences in level, feedback mechanisms and safeguarding. Fortunately, Learnit has extensive experience in this field (more than 25 years) and we are happy to help you through this process.

  • “A very interesting course that I have got a great deal out of. I will certainly be applying things within our company that I learned during the course. I have also gained a completely different view of the company I work for. Only now do I really see which things could be improved with us. And I will certainly be working on that.”

  • “Learnit is a professional organisation; I have personally made use of the courses offered to me several times and in various ways. I have got a lot out of them personally, and I still apply part of it in practice every day. Importantly, Learnit does not stop after a day's training, but continues to give the client the attention they need in the period afterwards.”

Yes, after completing the course you will receive a Learnit certificate of participation as proof that you have attended the course.

Tuckman describes the stages a team goes through in its development (forming, storming, norming, performing, adjourning). Lencioni focuses on the pitfalls that hold teams back, with five dysfunctions: absence of trust, fear of conflict, lack of commitment, avoidance of accountability and inattention to results. In the course you learn to combine both models.

Meredith Belbin distinguishes eight team roles: plant, monitor evaluator, coordinator, implementer, completer finisher, resource investigator, teamworker and shaper. The model is popular because it shows that a balanced team does not consist of identical people, but of complementary roles that reinforce one another.

Richard Hackman identifies five basic conditions: a real team structure with clear boundaries, a compelling direction with meaningful goals, a supportive context with resources and information, expert coaching and enabling norms. Only when these conditions are met can a team truly perform.

Yes, the Team Effectiveness Model course can also be delivered in-company, for example with your own team or management. The content is then tailored to your situation and objectives. Contact Learnit to discuss the options.

Throughout the course you work with your own team as a case study. You analyse the stage, the roles and any dysfunctions, and devise suitable interventions. You finish with a concrete action plan, so that after the course you know exactly which steps you are going to take in the workplace.
