Collaboration is something you do together, but you develop your skills yourself. In this course you work on communication, feedback, motivating others and setting SMART goals. That way you get more out of yourself and out of your collaboration with others.

Description

Collaboration is something you do together, but you can train your own contribution to it. In this course you work on the communication skills needed to collaborate smoothly with others, both in the office and in hybrid teams.

You gain insight into who you are, what drives you and how to get more out of yourself and out of working with others. You practise active listening, summarising and asking follow-up questions, giving and receiving feedback, motivating and negotiating. In addition, you consider the collaboration process itself: making clear agreements, setting SMART goals and dealing flexibly with changing priorities.

The course alternates theory with practical exercises, reflection and experimenting with new behaviour. This way you experience straight away what works and translate what you have learned into your own working practice.

Topics

During this training course you work on the communication and social skills you need in order to collaborate really well. You look at yourself, at the other person and at the process you go through together.

The topics covered include:

  • Communicating: talking and listening. Insight into both sides of the communication process.
  • Active listening. Listening as the basis of good communication.
  • Summarising and asking follow-up questions. Showing that you take the other person seriously.
  • Keeping to agreements. Doing what you promise, on time and as agreed.
  • Giving and receiving feedback. Working with the rules for feedback.
  • Motivating. Yourself and the people you work with.
  • Dealing with diversity. Different personalities, different approaches.
  • Negotiating. Not only taking, but also giving.
  • Setting goals with SMART. Specific, measurable, acceptable, realistic and time-bound.
  • Flexibility and setting priorities. Adapting when practice turns out differently than planned.

Result

After this training course you understand how the communication process works and you know how to use it purposefully to collaborate better. You will have sharpened your own communication skills: you listen actively, summarise, give and receive feedback and adapt your style to different personalities.

You will also have worked on every aspect of the collaboration process. You set SMART goals, make clear agreements and keep to them. You can also negotiate, set priorities and switch flexibly when things turn out differently than planned. In this way you get more out of yourself and out of the people you work with.

Target audience

This course is particularly suitable for participants who want to get more out of working with others. Do you recognise yourself in one or more of the points below?

You sometimes get stuck in working with others, you want to make optimal use of your own qualities and those of others, you want to sharpen your social and tactical skills.

This list is of course not exhaustive, because everyone is different. What would you like to focus on when it comes to collaboration?

Teaching method

During the course we alternate between concrete experience, experimenting with behaviour and techniques, reflection and exploring theory. This makes the programme suitable for different types of participant. There is plenty of action in the course, so that you actually experience the effect of new behaviour. That way you recognise your own success and it becomes clear what works for you.

We also stress that everyone is responsible for their own development and takes ownership of it. We invite you to reflect continuously and to make connections with your own practice. Our aim is to increase your insight and let you make the translation to your own situation yourself. That increases the likelihood of genuine behavioural change.

Prior knowledge

You do not need any specific prior knowledge for this training course. Do you want to collaborate better and sharpen your communication? Then you are welcome. An open attitude and a willingness to look at your own behaviour will help you to really get something out of it.

Who is the Collaboration and Purposeful Communication course suitable for?
The Collaborating and Communicating with Purpose course is suitable for anyone who wants to get more out of working with others. Think of professionals who sometimes get stuck in a team setting, want to sharpen their social and tactical skills, or want to make the best possible use of their own qualities and those of their colleagues. No prior knowledge is required. The course is taught in a classroom setting, together with other participants.
Which topics are covered in the Collaborating and Purposeful Communication course?
In this course you cover nine core topics: communicating (talking and listening), active listening, summarising and following up on conversations, keeping to agreements, giving and receiving feedback, motivating, dealing with diversity in personality types, negotiating and setting goals using the SMART model. The final programme is agreed in an intake beforehand, so that it matches your learning objectives and your practical situation.
Which teaching methods are used during the Collaboration and Purposeful Communication course?
The course combines four working methods: concrete experience, experimenting with behaviour and techniques, reflection and exploring theory. There is plenty of action in the programme, so that you immediately notice the effect of new behaviour. You alternate practical exercises with moments of reflection and keep relating what you have learned back to your own work situation. That increases the likelihood of lasting behavioural change.
Do you receive a certificate after the Collaborating and Communicating with Purpose course?
Yes, on completing the Collaboration and Purposeful Communication course you receive a certificate of participation from Learnit. This certificate confirms that you actively took part in both course days and worked on your communication and collaboration skills. The classroom course, including course materials and an experienced trainer who guides you in small groups.
Is prior knowledge required for the Collaborating and Communicating with Purpose course?
No, no specific prior knowledge is required for the Collaborating and Purposeful Communication course. The classroom training course is suitable for anyone who wants to improve the way they work with others. Prior to the course there is an individual intake, in which your learning objectives and practical experience are mapped out. The final programme is determined on that basis, so that the content matches your level.
What is the difference between the Collaborating and Communicating with Purpose course and a standalone communication skills course?
A standalone communication course focuses mainly on conversational skills such as active listening, summarising and giving feedback. The Collaborating and Communicating with Purpose course at Learnit explicitly combines these communication skills with the collaboration process: setting goals using the SMART model, keeping to agreements, negotiating, dealing with diversity in personality structures and setting priorities when things work out differently in practice than planned. So you work on how you communicate and on what you want to achieve together and how you make that happen. The course is given in a classroom setting in small groups. Choose this course if you find yourself getting stuck in collaborations and want to improve both your communication and your approach to working together.
How do I know that this training course will really deliver something in my day-to-day work, and will not just remain theory?
The Collaboration and Purposeful Communication course is built around experiencing, experimenting and reflecting. Not around listening to theory. During the course you actively practise conversation skills such as active listening, summarising, giving feedback and negotiating. Beforehand there is an individual intake in which your learning objectives are mapped out, so that the programme matches your own working situation. The SMART model is used to make objectives concrete and measurable. Compared with an e-learning course or a book, here you get direct feedback on your behaviour from an experienced trainer and fellow participants. You make the translation to practice yourself. The trainer guides that process. The result: you recognise your own patterns in collaboration and have practised concrete techniques that you can apply the following week. You will find the costs on the course page.
What does this classroom course give me that I cannot get from a book on communication or an online course?
The difference lies in practising with real people and receiving direct feedback. In a book or e-learning course you read about active listening, summarising and the SMART model, but you only notice what your style does when you try it out in a room with other participants. During this course you alternate theory with concrete experience, experimenting with behaviour and reflection. You receive feedback from the trainer and from fellow participants with different personality structures from your own, which self-study cannot offer. In addition, your learning objectives are identified in advance during an intake, so that the programme matches your practice. Choose self-study if you mainly want to acquire knowledge; choose this training course if you genuinely want to change your behaviour in collaboration.
How does this course compare with a DISC or MBTI programme if my main aim is to learn to deal with different personalities?
The Collaborating and Purposeful Communication course covers diversity in personality structures as one of nine topics, alongside active listening, feedback, motivating, negotiating and setting SMART goals. A purely DISC- or MBTI-based programme goes deeper into one model and the behavioural preferences that follow from it. If you are looking for a broader toolkit for the entire collaboration process. Communicating, keeping to agreements, setting priorities and dealing with differences. Then this one is a better fit. If you are mainly looking for a personality profile with an extensive report, then a dedicated DISC or MBTI programme makes more sense. The training course During an individual intake, the programme is tailored to your learning objectives.
What can I do differently after this course than before?
After the course you will have practised a number of specific skills that you can apply in your work straight away. In concrete terms, you will listen actively more effectively, summarise conversations and ask follow-up questions, and give and receive feedback in line with the feedback rules. You will formulate goals using the SMART model (specific, measurable, acceptable, realistic and time-bound) and set priorities when practice deviates from your plan. You will recognise different personality structures in colleagues and adapt your conversational approach accordingly. You will also negotiate more consciously, with an eye for the other person's interests. The course is classroom-based, with plenty of practice and reflection. What you will not learn: an in-depth personality assessment or a formal coaching qualification. Separate programmes are more suitable for that.
Does this course also work if I mainly collaborate with external parties or clients, rather than in a fixed team?
Yes. The communication skills covered in this course are not tied to a fixed team context. Elements such as active listening, summarising and asking follow-up questions, giving and receiving feedback, negotiating ('what's in it for me', while at the same time giving the other party something) and dealing with different personality structures are just as useful in client conversations, projects with suppliers or cross-functional collaboration as they are within a fixed team. Setting SMART goals and making realistic agreements also play a major role precisely in external collaborations. In the intake beforehand you provide your own context, so that the exercises match situations you recognise. The course is classroom-based.
What does the Collaborating and Communicating with Purpose course cost and how long does it last?

You can find the current price at the top right of this course page, along with the schedule, location and delivery format. For in-company or bespoke courses we are happy to provide a quotation on request.
