Newly appointed as a manager, or ready for the next step? In this practice-oriented training course you work on your leadership style, communication and team dynamics. You are given concrete tools with which to make an impact on the shop floor with confidence.

Description

On this Leading on the Shop Floor training course you will be given practical tools to lead your team with more confidence and effectiveness. You will work on the foundations of good leadership and discover which leadership style suits you.

You will gain insight into how to communicate clearly and respectfully, how to deal with diversity within your team and how to create a working environment in which collaboration, motivation and involvement are central. You will also address more difficult themes, such as resolving conflicts, raising the subject of gossip or negative behaviour and setting clear boundaries.

You also learn how to plan intelligently, delegate tasks and make well-considered decisions. You gain insight into how to bring your team along in times of change, recognise resistance and adapt your style flexibly to the situation. Finally, attention is given to self-reflection, personal development and stress management, so that you stay mentally fit and can support your team during challenging periods.

The course combines theory with plenty of practical exercises and takes place in an informal atmosphere with a small group, so there is ample room for your own cases and for interaction.

Topics

The following topics are covered during this course:

  • The basics of leadership: what characterises a good manager and how to combine leading with working alongside your team.
  • Your leadership style and communication: discover your own style, learn to communicate clearly and respectfully, listen actively, give feedback and adapt to a diverse team.
  • Collaboration and motivation: get a grip on team dynamics, keep yourself and your team motivated and build an inclusive working atmosphere.
  • Dealing with behaviour on the work floor: resolving conflicts constructively, stepping in when there is gossip and negativity, and setting boundaries professionally.
  • Smart planning, delegating and decision-making: setting priorities, dividing tasks fairly and making well-considered choices.
  • Leading change: recognising resistance, communicating transparently and adapting your style flexibly to the situation.
  • Growth, reflection and development: reflecting on your own actions, guiding your team in their development and dealing with workload and stress.

Result

After this course you will lead on the work floor with more confidence. You know your own leadership style and how to use it to motivate your team and help it grow.

Specifically, by the end you will be able to:

communicating clearly and respectfully with your team members, including in difficult conversations, tackling conflict, gossip and negative behaviour constructively, dividing tasks sensibly, setting priorities and making well-considered decisions, guiding your team through change and turning resistance into commitment, creating an inclusive working atmosphere in which everyone feels heard and valued, reflecting on your own actions and continuing to work on your personal growth as a manager.

You will go home with practical tools you can apply on your very next working day.

Target audience

This training course Leadership on the shop floor is suitable for (prospective) managers at MBO level who want to develop and strengthen their skills. The course is ideal for team leaders, supervisors and department heads who want to expand their knowledge and competences in the area of leadership. For employees moving up into a management role, the course also offers a solid foundation and practical insights for succeeding in their new position.

Teaching method

You take this course in a small group under the guidance of an experienced trainer. We work in a practical way: short pieces of theory are alternated with exercises, role plays and discussions about situations you encounter on the work floor yourself.

You bring in your own cases and receive direct feedback from the trainer and your fellow participants. This way you discover what suits you and what you can apply tomorrow. Between the course days you work on assignments in your own working environment, so you can try out what you have learnt straight away.

The atmosphere is informal and safe. There is plenty of room to ask questions, practise and reflect on your own leadership style.

Prior knowledge

You do not need any specific prior knowledge to take part in this course. Whether you have just taken on your first management role or have been leading a team for some time: you are welcome. An open attitude and a willingness to learn are enough.

In-company

Would you like to organise this training for a whole group or several groups? This can be cost-effective. For example, we can tailor the content entirely to your organisation, and training a whole group is also cheaper.

Are you looking at large numbers of participants or a complete academy? That involves a great deal. Consider planning and communication, for example, or identifying and agreeing the objectives and content of the training. Or differences in level, feedback mechanisms and safeguarding. Fortunately, Learnit has extensive experience in this field (more than 25 years) and we are happy to help you through this process.

Frequently asked questions

The Leading on the Shop Floor course is suitable for (prospective) managers at vocational (mbo) level. Think of team leaders, supervisors and department heads who want to strengthen their skills. If you are moving up into a management role, this classroom training course also gives you the practical basis to lead your team with confidence.

During the classroom-based Shop Floor Leadership course you cover seven core themes: the basics of leadership, your leadership style and communication, collaboration and motivation, dealing with behaviour on the shop floor, smart planning and delegating, leading change, and growth and reflection. You are given practical tools for feedback, conflict handling, time management and motivating a diverse team.

Yes, on completion of the Leadership in the Workplace course you receive a certificate of participation from Learnit. This certificate shows that you have fully attended the classroom course and practised the leadership skills covered. You can add it to your LinkedIn profile or CV to make your growth as a manager visible to your employer.

The Leadership on the shop floor course is taught in a classroom setting. You follow the course in a small group, in an informal and supportive atmosphere. The classroom format means you can practise real-life situations straight away, exchange ideas with other (prospective) managers and receive feedback from the trainer. Course material is included.

No, you do not need any specific prior education or knowledge for the Leading on the Shop Floor course. The course is pitched at MBO level and is suitable for both new and experienced managers. Whether you have just become a team leader or are moving up into a management role: you learn from the basics and get to work practically straight away.

In Leadership on the Shop Floor you practise in the classroom with real situations: giving feedback, tackling conflicts, delegating tasks and dealing with resistance. That is not something a book or e-learning can do, because there you get no immediate response to your behaviour, tone or attitude. In the classroom you do get that feedback. From the trainer and from other managers across a range of sectors. Self-study works fine for theory on leadership styles, but not for embedding conversational skills. An online course is cheaper and more flexible, but it lacks practice with group dynamics and the chance to compare notes with peers. Choose this classroom variant if you are new to a management role or if you find yourself getting stuck on communication, motivation or difficult behaviour within your team.

The course has a practical set-up, so you can try out techniques between the teaching days. The course covers concrete tools for communication, giving feedback, delegating and handling conflict. After day 1 you can usually get started straight away with active listening and recognising your own leadership style. Skills such as delegating tasks or dealing with resistance to change require more practice on the job. Expect it to take several weeks to months before these become routine. The course is taught in a classroom setting, so you practise in a small group with recognisable work situations. Reflection on your own cases forms part of the teaching days, which speeds up the translation to your own team.

Yes, the Shop Floor Leadership course is explicitly aimed at managers who also work alongside their team, such as team leaders, supervisors and department heads at MBO level. A fixed element is 'the difference between leading and doing': how you combine your role as a colleague with directing your team. That is practically relevant, because a working foreman often switches between doing and directing. During the course you work on setting boundaries, delegating tasks and choosing priorities, among other things. Precisely the points that working managers run into in practice. The course is delivered in a classroom setting, so you can discuss your situation with other participants who face the same dilemma.

These subjects are a fixed part of the training course. On days two and three you work on concrete behavioural situations: recognising conflicts and resolving them constructively, intervening in gossip or negative behaviour, and setting boundaries professionally. You practise conducting conversations, giving feedback and raising undesirable behaviour in your team. We also pay attention to resistance to change: how to recognise it, which communication helps to increase involvement and how to adapt your leadership style to the situation. The approach is practice-oriented. You bring in your own cases and practise with the group under the guidance of an experienced trainer. The course and is classroom-based.

The Leading on the Shop Floor course serves both groups within the same classroom training course, but the emphasis shifts per participant. Those who have just moved up mainly gain a grip on the basics: the difference between working alongside your team and managing it, discovering your own leadership style and building authority in a team where you used to be a colleague. Experienced managers use the same subjects to test and fine-tune existing patterns, for instance when giving feedback, delegating or dealing with resistance to change. Because the groups are small, the trainer can tailor exercises and case studies to the participant's level. You work with your own practical situations, so both newcomers and seasoned team leaders take away concrete tools.

The course covers several styles, so you can switch according to the situation instead of being tied to a single model. You gain insight into your own preferred style and practise directing, coaching, supporting and delegating. You also work with practical conversation techniques such as active listening, giving feedback and setting boundaries. The emphasis is on flexible leadership: you learn to adapt your style to the team member, the task and the situation (for example a new employee vs. an experienced colleague, or stable periods vs. periods of change). That is a different starting point from courses based on a single methodology. The course is delivered in a classroom setting, so you can practise the styles directly with other participants.

You can find the current price at the top right of this course page, along with the schedule, location and delivery format. For in-company or bespoke courses we are happy to provide a quotation on request.
