Production staff often work in an environment with tight planning, repetitive work and high pressure. It is precisely there that your leadership style makes the difference between a team that ticks boxes and a team that thinks along with you.
During this course you discover what really drives production employees and how to connect with that as a manager. You gain a grip on motivation theory that works on the shop floor and practise conversation techniques you can use tomorrow.
Day 1 focuses on the basics: motivation, communication, leadership styles and setting clear goals. On day 2 you move on to team dynamics, conflicts, personal development and stress. You finish with a concrete action plan for your own team.
The group is small, the trainer experienced and you work with situations from your own practice. That way you take not only insights but also workable approaches back to the workplace.
After this course you will know what drives your production staff and how to respond to it. You will communicate more clearly, listen better and give recognition in a way that lands. You will be able to switch between leadership styles, set SMART goals that your team buys into, and tackle conflicts before they escalate. With your own action plan you can get started on the shop floor straight away.
This course is intended for team leaders, foremen, shift leaders, production managers and operational managers who manage production employees on a daily basis. Whether you have just moved up or have been running a team for years: if you notice that motivation, communication or collaboration could be better, you are in the right place.
You work in a small group with plenty of room for your own cases. Theory alternates with practising conversation techniques, role plays and reflection. The trainer gives personal feedback and you translate each component to your own team through a concrete action plan.
No specific prior education is required. Some experience with managing people or an operational role in a production environment helps you link the exercises directly to your own practice.
The course is given in Dutch as standard. The trainer speaks English. English-language course materials can be used. If at least 3 participants register, the course can also be given entirely in English.

Much motivation theory assumes knowledge work with a high degree of autonomy and variety. In a production environment, the work is often repetitive, tied to schedules and machines, and performance is measured in output. What does work there is concrete recognition, clear communication about the reasoning behind decisions, short feedback loops and room to contribute ideas about one's own work process. During the course you translate theory into this type of working environment.
A directive leadership style works well with inexperienced staff, tight deadlines or safety issues: you tell people what needs to happen and how. A coaching style works better with experienced staff you want to help grow: you ask questions and let them come up with solutions themselves. A good manager switches deliberately between the two styles. In the course you learn to recognise which situation calls for which style.
Recognition lands best when it is specific, comes at the right time and is directed at behaviour or effort, not just at results. A brief remark on the shop floor about something you have seen happen often works better than a general round of compliments. What matters is that recognition suits the person: one person appreciates being named publicly, another prefers a quiet conversation. During the course you practise with both forms.
Don't wait too long. First have brief separate conversations with both employees to hear their side, without immediately taking sides. Then bring them together to get the facts and feelings on the table and look for workable agreements together. Follow up after a week to check whether it is working. On the course you practise this type of conversation using cases from your own team.
SMART goals are Specific, Measurable, Acceptable, Realistic and Time-bound. On the shop floor it works best if the goals are formulated together with the team, relate to things they can influence, and are linked to visible progress. A goal such as 'fewer breakdowns' works less well than 'no more than two breakdowns on line 3 this month'. On the course you will formulate SMART goals for your own team.
