In brief. Portfolio Management is a 3-day classroom course. You take it in Amsterdam and The Hague, in a group of no more than 8 participants. The price is € 2025,- excl. You manage a portfolio in which projects, budgets and strategic choices are constantly shifting. In this course, you learn how to get a grip on this with Agile as the working method and IPMA as the structure.
Description
A portfolio is more than a list of projects. It is the way in which your organisation translates its strategy into concrete choices: which project takes priority, which risks do you accept, and how do you allocate people and budget? In this course you are given a method for answering those questions time and again.
You work with two methods alongside each other. IPMA gives you the structure: roles, frameworks and monitoring of your portfolio. Agile gives you the working method: adjusting in short sprints based on feedback and results. Together they ensure that your portfolio stays tight on the main lines and flexible in execution.
The course has an interactive set-up. You alternate theory with practical examples, role plays and assignments from your own work. You go home with an action plan that you can apply straight away.

Result
After this course you know how to build, manage and adjust a portfolio based on your organisation's strategy. You can prioritise projects, allocate budgets and measure progress using KPIs. You apply Agile and IPMA in combination, motivate colleagues in the approach and recognise pitfalls before they become problems. You go home with an action plan for your own portfolio.
Target audience
This course is intended for portfolio managers, programme managers, project managers, PMO staff and managers who are responsible for a project portfolio. If you are moving into a role in which you manage several projects at once, this course is also right for you.
Teaching method
The course is interactive and practice-oriented. You alternate theory with practical examples, role plays and assignments. There is ample attention for your own cases: you put questions, experiences and problems from your work to the trainer and the group. You work towards a plan of action for your own portfolio.
Prior knowledge
No specific prior education is required for this course. Experience with project-based working or a project role will help you apply the material to your own practice more quickly.

The course is given in Dutch as standard. The trainer speaks English. English-language course materials can be used. If at least 3 participants register, the course can also be given entirely in English.

Frequently asked questions
Can I cancel free of charge?
Yes. Up to four weeks before the first day of the course you can cancel free of charge, without giving a reason. You then receive a credit note or, if you have already paid, a refund. If you cancel later, you pay part of the course fee: 25% between four and two weeks before the start, 75% in the two weeks before it and 100% in the final week. Moving to another start date is free of charge up to two weeks before the start, after that 50%. Sending a colleague in your place is always possible. Read the cancellation terms.

Project management focuses on the successful delivery of a single project: scope, planning, budget and quality. Portfolio management operates one level higher and looks at the projects as a whole. How do you combine Agile and IPMA in portfolio management?
IPMA gives you the structure of the portfolio: roles, frameworks, monitoring and control. Agile gives you the way of working: adjusting course in short sprints based on feedback and results. Together they ensure that your portfolio stays tight on the strategic main line and flexible in execution. In the course you learn how to apply both methods alongside each other.
How do you prioritise projects within a portfolio?
You prioritise projects based on strategic contribution, risk, available capacity and dependencies with other projects. In the course you learn how to set criteria, score projects and substantiate choices towards clients and stakeholders. This turns prioritisation into a repeatable process rather than a case-by-case negotiation.
Which KPIs do you use for portfolio management?
Common KPIs are lead time, budget utilisation, strategic contribution per project, the risk profile of the portfolio and the realisation of benefits after delivery. In the course, you learn which KPIs suit your organisation, how to read reports and how to use measurable results to steer the portfolio.
What are the biggest pitfalls when implementing portfolio management?
Common pitfalls are: starting too many projects at once, unclear roles between portfolio, programme and project management, no link with the strategy, and KPIs that only steer on time and money without looking at strategic contribution. In the course, we discuss these pitfalls using examples from practice.
