The Product Owner is the visionary behind the product. You know what the customer needs, set the priorities and make sure the team delivers value. That calls for vision, communication and the nerve to make choices. In this course you will learn how to fulfil that role within a Scrum team. You will work on a product vision, practise with the backlog and discover how to keep stakeholders involved. Practice is central, so that you can apply what you have learned straight away.
Scrum is a method for making complex projects manageable. It is one of the Agile ways of working and has its roots in Toyota's Lean philosophy. The essence? Short cycles, quick feedback and clear communication between the team, the client and the organisation.
This course focuses on the role of the Product Owner. Alongside a solid introduction to Scrum, you will look in more depth at what is expected of you as a Product Owner. You will learn how to develop a product vision, how to draw up and maintain a backlog, and how to set priorities based on value for the customer.
You will be given practical tools for working effectively with the Scrum Master and the team without taking over their role. You will also learn how to identify stakeholders and keep them involved. By the end of the course you will know how to monitor the project and draw up a realistic release plan.
After this course you will know exactly what is expected of you as a Product Owner. You will be able to formulate a clear product vision, draw up a valuable backlog and set priorities from the customer's perspective. You will know how to work effectively with the Scrum Master and the team, and how to keep stakeholders involved. You will also be able to draw up a release plan and monitor the progress of your project. You will be ready to take on the role of Product Owner with confidence in your own organisation.
This course is intended for anyone who fulfils the role of Scrum Product Owner within their organisation, or who will shortly be taking on that role. Think of team leaders, department heads, project managers and senior team members. And if you simply want to know more about what a Product Owner does and how this role contributes to the success of a Scrum team, you are equally welcome. Prior knowledge of Scrum is helpful, but not a strict requirement.
The course is classroom-based and taught by an experienced trainer. You do not just take in theory; you work with the material directly through a real Scrum project during the lessons. Much of what you learn you make your own through Scrum games. These games make abstract concepts tangible and ensure a varied and energetic course. Because the group is small, you can count on personal attention and the content is tailored to the wishes and background of the participants.
Some basic knowledge of Scrum is useful in order to follow the course properly. You do not need experience as a Product Owner, but it helps if you know what sprints, backlogs and stand-ups are. Do you not yet have any knowledge of Scrum? Then take an introductory Agile or Scrum course first, or read up on the basics. Not sure whether you have sufficient prior knowledge? Please feel free to contact us.
Would you like to organise this training for a whole group or several groups? This can be cost-effective. For example, we can tailor the content entirely to your organisation, and training a whole group is also cheaper.
Are you looking at large numbers of participants or a complete academy? That involves a great deal. Consider planning and communication, for example, or identifying and agreeing the objectives and content of the training. Or differences in level, feedback mechanisms and safeguarding. Fortunately, Learnit has extensive experience in this field (more than 25 years) and we are happy to help you through this process.
The training is given in Dutch as standard. The trainer has a good command of English. English-language course material can be used. With a minimum enrolment of 3 participants, the training can also be given entirely in English.
When would you like to start?

Taking a training course at Learnit means learning together. Together with your experienced trainer, together with your course group or together with your colleagues. And whether you take the training at home, at your office or at one of our training locations, we are always available to help you. To share our knowledge with you in a way that is genuinely useful to you. Getting further together through personal attention and understanding each other well; that is what we believe in.
Learning theory from a book that you can then hardly use in your work? Not at Learnit! Whichever training you take with us, you can put it to use at your workplace straight away. Because of the unique learning objectives you set together with the trainer at the start of the training. Because of the alternation between theory and (interactive) practical assignments. And by bringing the challenges you face in your daily work along to the training.

“If you have covered the theory of the Product Owner, but you still run into things in practice that you would like to put to a group and a trainer, then this is a perfect course.”
Lolita van der Linden, Everest- Agile Scrum: the Product Owner
“Good and enjoyable course. Plenty of thought is given to your personal situation and to applying things in practice. My trainer did a very good job.”
- Agile scrum: the Product Owner
"I was very pleased with the online one-to-one course itself. I hesitated to accept it as an alternative to classroom training because it is shorter, but in the end I think I got more out of it this way."
- Agile scrum: the Product Owner
"Wouter is very quick at moving from theory to practice and in doing so gives insight into the Scrum process."
- Agile Scrum Basics
"I learned a great deal in this very varied course, particularly the fact that you have to look at delivering an end product in a different way. And the techniques involved in that too. Because we were in a small group, there was plenty of room to ask questions and share experiences. I do think you only really master Scrum by actually getting to work with it. The organisation has to be ready for it as well."
