Stakeholders can feel like people looking over your shoulder, but they have a reason for wanting a say. In this course you learn to pinpoint their interests and steer the relationship so that you make progress together.
Whether you lead a project, develop policy or come in as a consultant: you will deal with people who have an opinion about your work. Clients, management, colleagues from another department, the local council. Sometimes they support you, sometimes they hold you back, and often you cannot tell in advance which way it will go.
You work towards an approach that fits your own situation. You map out your own field of forces, analyse interests and influence, and choose a suitable strategy for each stakeholder. You practise conversations in which you turn resistance into movement, and you learn to speak the language of the people you need.
You work with your own case throughout. What you learn, you apply directly to the project, initiative or piece of advice you are working on right now.
Day 1: analysis and preparation
Day 2: strategy and conversation
After the course you will have a concrete step-by-step plan for mapping your stakeholders and approaching them purposefully. You will know which strategy suits which type of stakeholder, you will recognise resistance earlier and know how to turn it around. Even in difficult conversations you will stay calm and clear about what the project delivers for everyone.
This course is intended for project managers, policymakers, internal and external advisers, team leaders and professionals who deal with multiple stakeholders in their work. You will recognise yourself in this course if you find that progress often depends on people you cannot directly manage.
The course is interactive and practice-oriented. You work with your own case, practise conversation situations with fellow participants and receive personal feedback from the trainer. Theory is used briefly and clearly, so that you spend most of the time applying what you learn. The group is small, which leaves room for your questions and examples.
No specific prior knowledge is required. It is useful, however, to bring along a current situation or project in which stakeholders play a role.
There are no specific remarks for this course.
Would you like to organise this training for a whole group or several groups? This can be cost-effective. For example, we can tailor the content entirely to your organisation, and training a whole group is also cheaper.
Are you looking at large numbers of participants or a complete academy? That involves a great deal. Consider planning and communication, for example, or identifying and agreeing the objectives and content of the training. Or differences in level, feedback mechanisms and safeguarding. Fortunately, Learnit has extensive experience in this field (more than 25 years) and we are happy to help you through this process.
The training is given in Dutch as standard. The trainer has a good command of English. English-language course material can be used. With a minimum enrolment of 3 participants, the training can also be given entirely in English.
At Learnit you will always find a course that takes you further. From (technical) IT skills to communication or personal leadership. You can also choose the training format that suits you best: a classroom course, a tailor-made course at your own office, an online course or an e-learning. We have the right course and the right format for everyone. Because learning in the way that suits you best delivers the best results.

Taking a training course at Learnit means learning together. Together with your experienced trainer, together with your course group or together with your colleagues. And whether you take the training at home, at your office or at one of our training locations, we are always available to help you. To share our knowledge with you in a way that is genuinely useful to you. Getting further together through personal attention and understanding each other well; that is what we believe in.
Learning theory from a book that you can then hardly use in your work? Not at Learnit! Whichever training you take with us, you can put it to use at your workplace straight away. Because of the unique learning objectives you set together with the trainer at the start of the training. Because of the alternation between theory and (interactive) practical assignments. And by bringing the challenges you face in your daily work along to the training.

"It is an organisation that asks in advance what the training course should be about and with how many participants, so you know straight away where you stand. I found the collaboration pleasant. We were given a lot of information but also applied it in practice."
"It was an enjoyable course."

You learn to recognise and acknowledge stakeholders, analyse their interests and influence, and choose a suitable strategy for each stakeholder. You also practise conversations in which you build support, deal with resistance and connect with the language and interests of the other person.
The course is suitable for project leaders, policymakers, internal and external consultants, team leaders and professionals whose work depends on people they cannot manage directly. If progress often stalls because of conflicting interests or resistance, you will find practical tools here.
No, specific prior knowledge is not required. However, it is valuable to bring along a current situation, project or advisory process in which stakeholders play an important role. You will work with it actively during the course.
Yes, afterwards you receive the Learnit certificate of attendance. This shows that you have completed the Stakeholder Management course.
Yes, the course can also be organised in-company for your team or organisation. We then tailor the content to the stakeholders, projects and context you work with. Get in touch to discuss the options.
We deliberately work in small groups. This gives every participant enough room to work on their own case and receive personal feedback from the trainer and fellow participants.
Project communication focuses on informing those involved about progress and decisions. Stakeholder management goes a step further: you analyse who has influence, what their interest is and how to build support person by person. Informing is one of the strategies in this, alongside involving, consulting or influencing, for example.
A stakeholder analysis starts with mapping out all the parties who have an opinion on or an interest in your project. You then determine the interest and influence of each stakeholder, often using a matrix. On that basis you choose a strategy per group: involve closely, keep satisfied, inform or monitor. During the course you apply these steps directly to your own case.
Resistance is usually a signal that an interest or concern lies beneath the surface. You start by genuinely finding out where the resistance comes from, by listening and asking follow-up questions. Only once you acknowledge that interest does room arise to look for a solution together. During the course, you practise conversation techniques so that you can apply this in practice.
A good stakeholder manager can think analytically and listen well. You read interests and influence quickly, you adapt your communication style and you keep an overview of a complex field of forces. It also helps if you are self-assured: you stay calm and clear when interests clash or the pressure mounts.
Stakeholder management is particularly valuable in projects, change processes and consultancy assignments where several parties influence the outcome. The greater the number of stakeholders and the more their interests diverge, the more important a deliberate approach becomes. Ideally you start during the preparation phase, before the first decisions are made.
