Figures only tell you something if you know what you are steering towards. In this course you link strategic objectives to the measurable performance of your department, using instruments such as SMART, EFQM and the Balanced Scorecard.
As a manager or team leader, you are responsible for the results of your department. To achieve those results you need clear objectives that align with the organisational strategy and that you can translate into the work of your staff. Without that translation, figures remain isolated numbers and steering remains difficult.
In this course you are given the instruments to make your department transparent and to make targeted adjustments. You work on critical success factors and key performance indicators, learn how to plan capacity and discover how to account for your departmental policy. You also look at your own competency profile and that of your staff.
Among other things, you will work on the following questions:
After this course you will be able to translate organisational objectives into SMART objectives for your department, work with critical success factors and KPIs, and manage on the basis of measurable data. You will know how to plan capacity, draw up implementation plans and account for your policy. You will also have insight into your own competencies as a manager and those of your employees.
This course is intended for team leaders and managers who run a department and want to lead it in a more figure-based and structured way. If you already have experience with instruments such as personal development plans and want to develop your management skills further, this course is a good fit.
The course combines theory with plenty of practical exercise. Each topic is introduced on the basis of current management literature, after which you get to work with it straight away. At the start, you jointly choose one or more practical cases from the group, which run as a common thread through the course.
You learn to map out your department using tools such as EFQM and the Balanced Scorecard, and determine where to focus your attention. You then work on measuring those focus areas, so that you can link objectives to results. Between the course days you receive assignments to apply what you have learnt directly within your own organisation.
No specific prior knowledge is required. Work experience as a manager or team leader is a condition, however, so that you can apply what you learn directly to your own department.
The course is given in Dutch as standard. The trainer speaks English. English-language course materials can be used. If at least 3 participants register, the course can also be given entirely in English.

Yes, this course is also available as an in-company or bespoke programme. We tailor the content, examples and cases to your organisation and department, so that what you learn ties in directly with your day-to-day practice.
Critical success factors (CSFs) are the areas in which your department has to excel in order to achieve its objectives. KPIs, key performance indicators, are the measurable variables you use to track whether you are on course. CSFs therefore describe the ‘what’, while KPIs make it measurable. In the course you will learn to apply both purposefully within your department.
SMART stands for Specific, Measurable, Acceptable, Realistic and Time-bound. A good departmental objective is concrete ('we will reduce the lead time from X to Y'), has a measuring point, is supported by the team, is achievable within the available capacity, and has a clear deadline. During the course you practise formulating SMART objectives based on your own organisational goals.
The Balanced Scorecard is a management tool that looks at a department's performance from four perspectives: financial, customer, internal processes, and learning and growth. As a manager you use it to steer on financial figures, customer satisfaction, process efficiency and the development of your team. In the course you learn how to set up a Balanced Scorecard for your own department.
EFQM is a European model for organisational excellence. It helps you to map out systematically how your organisation or department is performing in terms of leadership, strategy, people, processes and results. Combined with the Balanced Scorecard, it gives you a complete picture: EFQM shows you where you stand and where you can improve, while the Balanced Scorecard helps you to manage that in a targeted way.
Managing by numbers makes your policy concrete and open to discussion. Without figures, ambitions remain vague and results are hard to assess. With clear KPIs you know where you stand, you can adjust in good time and you account for your work transparently to your management and your team. At the same time, it prevents you from making decisions about capacity, priorities and investments on gut feeling alone.
