Agile project management delivers results quickly in short sprints. In this 2-day course you get to grips with the Agile philosophy, scrum roles and useful tools such as MoSCoW and timeboxing. After that you are ready for the official Foundation exam.

Description

Agile project management is a popular and effective way of working on projects. Projects are delivered in small, manageable steps (sprints). As a project manager, you steer an Agile project differently from traditional methods such as PRINCE2.

In this two-day Agile Project Management Foundation course you will be introduced to the philosophy and basic principles of Agile and Scrum. You will learn which roles, responsibilities and team structures belong to an Agile project team, and how to apply the Agile Framework in practice. You will also work with aids and tools such as the MoSCoW method and timeboxing.

After completing the course, you will be able to manage projects flexibly, respond quickly and achieve the maximum project result within a short lead time. You will also be well prepared for the official Agile Project Management Foundation exam.

Result

After this two-day course you will know the philosophy, principles and processes of Agile project management and how Agile relates to more traditional methods such as PRINCE2. You will know the team roles within a scrum team and which Agile techniques, aids and tools to use in which situation.

You will be able to manage projects yourself according to the Agile Framework, set priorities using the MoSCoW method and structure your work with timeboxing. You will recognise risks in an Agile project and know how to limit them. You will also be well prepared for the official Agile Project Management Foundation exam.

Target audience

The Agile Project Management Foundation course has been developed for project managers in an Agile environment. The course is also of interest to information managers, business analysts, functional designers, product developers and software engineers who work in Agile teams or will shortly start doing so.

Teaching method

During this two-day course you will alternate theory with plenty of practice. You will work with examples from your own working situation and apply the Agile principles directly in exercises and assignments. This way you will experience how sprints, scrum roles and tools such as the MoSCoW method and timeboxing work in practice.

You take the course in a small group, guided by an experienced trainer with extensive practical experience in Agile project management. There is plenty of room for questions, discussion and exchanging experiences with other participants. You receive up-to-date course material and, afterwards, a certificate of participation. Prior knowledge

No specific prior knowledge is required for this course. Some experience of working on projects or in project teams is useful, but not a requirement. Are you interested in Agile and do you want to manage projects more flexibly? Then you can simply join.

The Agile Project Management Foundation course is intended for project managers working in an Agile environment, or about to do so. The Agile Project Management Foundation course consists of two classroom days led by an experienced trainer. Day 1 focuses on theory: Agile philosophy, scrum roles and team structure. On day 2 you work practically with the Agile Framework, timeboxing and the MoSCoW method, using examples from your own working practice. Up-to-date course material is included.

A self-study route works perfectly well if you mainly want to work through the theory and set your own pace. Learnit's classroom-based Agile Project Management Foundation course lasts two days. The difference lies in three things. First, you practise the Agile Framework, MoSCoW and timeboxing using examples from your own practice, with direct feedback from the trainer. Second, you discuss scrum roles, team structure and collaboration with other participants, which is difficult to replicate in self-study. The two-day course prepares you in terms of content for the official EXIN Agile Project Management Foundation exam. Day 2 concludes with specific exam preparation. On day 2 you will work practically with two core tools from Agile project management. The MoSCoW method helps you prioritise requirements into four categories: Must have, Should have, Could have and Won't have. You will learn how to determine, together with stakeholders, what is really needed for a successful delivery and what can wait. You will learn to use timeboxing to give sprints and activities a fixed duration, where the scope is flexible but the deadline is fixed. You will practise with examples from your own working environment, so that you can apply both techniques directly to ongoing projects. Together with the Agile Framework, these tools form the basis for the planning and control of your projects. Both topics also feature in the official Agile Project Management Foundation exam from EXIN.

In traditional project management you mainly steer by a plan set out in advance, with scope, budget and lead time as firm parameters. With Agile you work in short sprints and deliver in small, manageable steps. Your role therefore shifts from controller to facilitator: you remove obstacles, monitor priorities and ensure the team can work in a self-managing way. The two-day classroom Agile Project Management Foundation course covers these differences explicitly, including the Agile management style, scrum team roles and tools such as MoSCoW and timeboxing. Agile does not mean you have no plan. You simply plan to a different rhythm and steer on value per sprint instead of on a single final delivery. That calls for different conversations with the client and the team.

During the Agile Project Management Foundation course you will learn the methodology as well as the advantages, disadvantages and success factors of working with Agile. This allows you to assess for yourself afterwards whether your organisation is ready for it. Important signals you will learn to recognise: are teams willing to work in short sprints, can the client be available as product owner, and is there scope to adjust priorities using the MoSCoW method? You will also learn how Agile relates to classic methods such as PRINCE2, so that you can give well-founded advice. The course lasts two days and is taught in a classroom setting. A full organisational transition requires more than this foundation; it does, however, lay the basis for a well-founded implementation decision.

Within an Agile or Scrum team the roles are deliberately kept separate. The Product Owner determines the 'what': he or she manages the product backlog, sets priorities (often using the MoSCoW method) and safeguards business value. The Scrum Master safeguards the 'how' of the process: he or she facilitates the team, removes obstacles and upholds the Agile principles. The project manager deals with the wider framework: high-level planning, stakeholder management, budget and alignment with the rest of the organisation. In a pure Scrum team the classic project manager role does not always exist; those tasks often shift to the Product Owner or to a programme level.
