With the Excel Advanced course you take your spreadsheet skills to an advanced level. You work with pivot tables, advanced functions, macros and lookup functions. Optionally, we also cover Excel with Copilot, so that you can use AI for smarter analyses.

Description

In this course you build on your basic knowledge of Excel and get to work with the programme's advanced functions. You learn how to make complex information clear and how to present it using pivot tables, charts and slicers. You also work with advanced formulas such as COUNTIF, SUMIF and VLOOKUP, and discover how to use logical and financial functions.

You also learn to work with subtotals, names for cells and ranges, and automatic table formatting. You automate repetitive tasks with macros, so that you work faster and more efficiently. The course optionally covers Excel in combination with Microsoft 365 Copilot, the AI assistant that lets you analyse and edit data even faster.

At the start of the day your trainer discusses your starting level and learning objectives, so that the topics match your own practice. You can bring your own work examples, and when booking you indicate which version of Excel you use, so that you work with suitable course materials.

Topics

  • Getting to know the interface: what is where?
  • Formatting tables automatically
  • Working with cell styles and themes
  • Advanced functions: COUNTIF, SUMIF and AVERAGEIF
  • Financial functions: PV, FV and PMT
  • Logical functions: AND and OR
  • Nested functions: IF and AVERAGE
  • VLOOKUP and HLOOKUP
  • Assigning names to cells and ranges
  • Working with subtotals at several levels
  • Creating and adjusting pivot tables
  • Filtering with slicers
  • Automating repetitive actions with macros
  • Optional: using Excel with Copilot

Result

After this course you will work confidently with Excel's advanced functions. You will create clear pivot tables, use slicers to filter quickly, and apply logical and nested functions to carry out complex calculations. You will work with subtotals, VLOOKUP and HLOOKUP, and automate repetitive tasks with macros. Have you opted for the optional Copilot in Excel module? Then you will also know how to use the AI assistant to gain insight from your data more quickly. You can rightly call yourself an advanced Excel user.

Target audience

This course is intended for anyone who has mastered the basics of Excel and now wants to get to grips with the advanced functions. Think of employees who regularly work with large volumes of data, produce reports or carry out analyses. If you want to work faster and more efficiently with pivot tables, formulas and macros, this course is also right for you.

Teaching method

You take this course in our open learning format: a full course day on which you work independently in a small group using a digital learning environment and clear course materials. An experienced trainer is present all day to guide you, answer questions and think along with your own practical examples.

You work through the topics at your own pace and decide for yourself where to spend extra time. That way you work purposefully on the functions you use most in your job, from pivot tables and advanced formulas to macros and, optionally, Copilot in Excel.

Prior knowledge

You are already comfortable with the basics of Excel. You know how to build formulas, format cells and carry out simple calculations. If you have taken the Excel Basics course or have comparable work experience, you are in the right place here.

None in particular.

Course format

This training is offered on the basis of our Open Learning teaching method. This means that you work independently, with active guidance from our trainer, to master the material. That way you can achieve your learning objectives at your own pace, without being held back by fellow participants working faster or slower. The trainer makes sure that you stay on schedule and meet your learning objectives. This form of learning leaves room for a tailored approach. You have the opportunity to bring in examples from your own practice and IT environment, so that your learning is even more specific. more...

In-company

Would you like to organise this training for a whole group or several groups? This can be cost-effective. For example, we can tailor the content entirely to your organisation, and training a whole group is also cheaper.

Are you looking at large numbers of participants or a complete academy? That involves a great deal. Consider planning and communication, for example, or identifying and agreeing the objectives and content of the training. Or differences in level, feedback mechanisms and safeguarding. Fortunately, Learnit has extensive experience in this field (more than 25 years) and we are happy to help you through this process.

Frequently asked questions

During the Excel Advanced course you learn to work with Excel's advanced functions. Think of pivot tables, slicers, subtotals and macros. You practise with logical and financial functions such as IF, AND, OR, PV and PMT, and with lookup functions such as VLOOKUP. Afterwards you will be able to make complex data clear and automate repetitive tasks at the touch of a button.

The Excel Advanced course lasts one day in the open learning format. You work through the course material at your own pace, with an experienced trainer alongside you for explanations, questions and practical examples. Because you determine the focus yourself, you can spend extra time on topics such as pivot tables, macros or advanced functions that are important for your work.

Yes, for the Excel Advanced course you need a basic knowledge of Excel. You can already work with formulas, format cells and create simple tables. Not sure about your level? At the start of the day the trainer discusses your starting level and tailors the topics and exercises to it, so that you can work specifically on what matters to you.

Yes, the Excel Advanced course optionally covers Copilot in Excel. You learn how to use the Microsoft 365 AI assistant to generate formulas, analyse data and build pivot tables more quickly. Let us know when you book whether you want to include this part, and the trainer will tailor the exercises accordingly.

The Excel Advanced course is suitable for all common versions of Excel, both Excel for Windows and Excel for Mac. When you register, you indicate which version you use. The planners make sure you receive the course materials that match your software version, so that the exercises and screenshots correspond to what you see at your own workstation.

Yes, the Excel Advanced course is also available in-company. You then receive a course tailored to your team, at a location of your choice. You agree the content with the trainer in advance, so that the topics and exercises match your working situation. You can easily request a quote via the course page.

A classroom course makes more sense once you work with Excel on a regular basis and want to learn when to use which function, not just how to type it. YouTube shows you individual tricks, but gives no feedback on your file or your way of working. On the Excel Intermediate course you work in a one-day open learning format with a trainer who discusses your starting level and tailors the exercises to your practice. You may bring your own work files, for example a sales report on which you want to build a pivot table or macro. In addition, you choose your Excel version in advance, so that the material matches. Self-study is better suited to individual questions; a course is better suited if you want to master pivot tables, lookup functions, nested IF and macros as a coherent whole.

Excel Intermediate is the logical step after a basic course and covers the breadth of advanced functions you need in an average office role. You learn to work with pivot tables, slicers, subtotals, nested functions such as IF and AVERAGE, lookup functions (VLOOKUP and HLOOKUP), financial functions (PV, FV, PMT) and macros for repetitive tasks. A specialist pivot tables course goes deeper into one topic, but lacks the broader overview. An Excel Advanced course builds on the intermediate material and focuses on complex formulas, dashboards and data analysis. Choose Excel Intermediate if you currently mainly use basic formulas and simple tables and want to expand your toolkit considerably. Copilot in Excel is optionally covered as well, so that you know how AI can support your analytical work.

Straight after the course day you can apply the functions covered in your own work. The course is an open learning format day in which you practise with practical assignments, and you may bring your own work files. That speeds up the transfer to practice: you leave the course with working examples from your own situation. For pivot tables, COUNTIF, SUMIF and VLOOKUP, most participants are working independently within a week. Macros and nested functions usually require two to four weeks of practice before you apply them fluently. Compared with self-study via YouTube or a manual, you save weeks of searching, because during the course you receive immediate feedback from the trainer on your own cases. You also receive course materials to read back later.

Yes, the Excel Intermediate course fits in well with work involving large data sets and periodic reports. You will learn to create and adjust pivot tables, use slicers to filter interactively, and set up subtotals to switch between detailed and overall level. For looking up data in large tables, we cover VLOOKUP and HLOOKUP and the database functions COUNTIF, SUMIF and AVERAGEIF. Repetitive actions can be recorded with macros, which saves time on monthly or weekly reports. Copilot in Excel is optionally covered as well, allowing you to analyse patterns in data more quickly. You are welcome to bring your own practical examples, so that the exercises match your data set and reporting structure.

The Excel Advanced course at Learnit is a classroom-based one-day course in an open learning format. You work in a small group with a trainer who determines your starting level and tailors the material to your working situation. You can bring your own work files and ask questions about your specific challenges straight away. An online course is cheaper and more flexible in terms of time, but lacks that personal guidance and immediate feedback. A Microsoft certification (such as MO-201 Excel Associate) is an exam that tests your knowledge, not a training course. The Excel Advanced course focuses on the practical application of functions such as pivot tables, VLOOKUP, IF functions and macros, not on exam preparation. If you want to obtain a certificate, you can use this course as preparation for self-study towards the exam.

Copilot in Excel is mainly useful if you regularly work with larger datasets and want to generate patterns, summaries or formulas quickly without building every function by hand. You can, for example, ask Copilot to analyse trends in a sales table, suggest a pivot table or explain a formula. In the Excel Intermediate course we cover Copilot optionally, alongside topics such as pivot tables, advanced functions and macros. You need a Microsoft 365 licence with Copilot in order to use the functionality yourself. If you work in an organisation without a Copilot licence, the course remains fully worthwhile on the basis of the regular Excel functions. The combination of classic functions and Copilot means you understand what the AI is proposing and can assess the results critically.
