Teaching method

You follow this course in an open learning format: for a full day you work independently at your own pace on practice-oriented assignments in Excel. An experienced trainer is present all day to guide you, answer questions and think along about your working situation. That way you decide where to place the focus yourself, whether that is PivotTables, formulas or the optional work with Copilot in Excel.

Prior knowledge

You already work with Excel and know the basics: filling in cells, creating simple formulas and formatting worksheets. Would you like an even more confident start? Then take our Excel Basics course first. No other specific prior knowledge is required.

Comments

You take this course in our open learning format: you work through the material independently at your own pace, with a trainer on hand for explanations and questions. This allows you to focus on the parts that are most relevant to you. Feel free to bring your own practical examples, so the exercises can be tailored to them.

Course format

This training is offered on the basis of our Open Learning teaching method. This means that you work independently, with active guidance from our trainer, to master the material. That way you can achieve your learning objectives at your own pace, without being held back by fellow participants working faster or slower. The trainer makes sure that you stay on schedule and meet your learning objectives. This form of learning leaves room for a tailored approach. You have the opportunity to bring in examples from your own practice and IT environment, so that your learning is even more specific. more...

In-company

Would you like to organise this training for a whole group or several groups? This can be cost-effective. For example, we can tailor the content entirely to your organisation, and training a whole group is also cheaper.

Are you looking at large numbers of participants or a complete academy? That involves a great deal. Consider planning and communication, for example, or identifying and agreeing the objectives and content of the training. Or differences in level, feedback mechanisms and safeguarding. Fortunately, Learnit has extensive experience in this field (more than 25 years) and we are happy to help you through this process.

Why? - you can share information with each other; - in this age of multimedia, where everyone is only concerned with themselves, you get into contact with others about, among other things, why they are taking this course; and - because there is only one trainer present, the course can be offered at an attractive price (LEAN thinking).”

Frequently asked questions

The Excel Pivot Tables, Formulas and Functions course lasts one day and is delivered in the open learning format. You work in a small group at your own pace on formulas, functions, databases and pivot tables, with personal guidance from an experienced trainer. You can also take this day as the first day of the two-day Excel Expert course.

In this course you learn to work with advanced formulas and functions, to build and filter databases, and to create pivot tables in order to present large volumes of data clearly. Topics covered include date, text and financial functions, slicers, timelines, pivot charts and calculated fields. Optionally, you also look at Excel in combination with Microsoft 365 Copilot.

Yes, you need basic knowledge of Excel. You can already format a worksheet, enter simple formulas and work with cells and ranges. Experience with functions such as SUM and AVERAGE is useful. Not sure about your level? At the start of the day the trainer will discuss your starting level and tailor the exercises accordingly, so that you can work in a focused way.

Yes, this course optionally covers Excel with Microsoft 365 Copilot. You will learn how to use the AI assistant to analyse data, build formulas and generate insights from pivot tables. Let us know when you book that you are interested, and the trainer will tailor the exercises accordingly.

The course is suitable for all modern versions of Excel, including Excel 365, 2021, 2019 and 2016. When you book, you indicate which version you use, so that you receive the right course material for your working environment. That way you practise with the buttons and menus you see every day and can apply what you have learned directly to your work.

Yes, the Excel Pivot Tables, Formulas and Functions course is also available in-company. Your organisation then receives a tailored course, geared to your own practical examples and data files. This is useful if you want to train several colleagues at once. The course is delivered on location or online by an experienced trainer. Request a quotation via the course page for the options and prices.

A YouTube tutorial or online self-study works fine if you want to learn one specific function, for example VLOOKUP or a simple pivot table. You choose this classroom course if you work with data on a structural basis and want to understand the connections between functions, databases and pivot tables. During the open learning day you work at your own pace on exercises, with a trainer who answers your questions on the spot. You can bring your own work files and use them during the course. That often saves weeks of puzzling afterwards. Self-study also lacks feedback on your approach: with a tutorial, you have no way of knowing whether your solution is efficient. In the course, you do get that assessment.

The Excel Pivot Tables, Formulas and Functions course is a one-day open learning course covering advanced functions, databases and pivot tables. The two-day Excel Expert course includes the same first day, but adds a second day on macros (VBA basics) and working together with other Office programs. Choose the one-day version if you mainly want to work with large volumes of data using pivot tables, slicers, timelines, database functions (COUNTIF, SUMIF) and calculated fields. Choose Excel Expert if you also want to automate tasks with macros or exchange data with Word and Outlook. Overlap in content: day 1 is identical. So you can take this course first and decide later whether to book day 2 separately.

You will notice this because during the course day you build pivot tables yourself using practice files. You start with a raw database, turn it into a pivot table report, change the layout, add slicers and a timeline, and build in calculated fields. You are also welcome to bring your own practical examples. The trainer tailors the exercises to these, so that you work with data you recognise. At the end of the day you will therefore not only have seen the theory, but also have built a working pivot table on your own file. That is the difference with watching a video: you have done it yourself, with direct feedback. Most participants apply pivot tables to their own reports within a week of the course.

Yes, you may bring your own practical examples to the course day. The trainer will tailor the topics and exercises to them, so that you work on situations you recognise from your own job. That is an important difference from a fixed, rigidly structured group course: you learn advanced functions, databases and pivot tables not only on standard practice files, but also apply them to your own data. Do bear in mind that you do not need to bring confidential company data. An anonymised copy or a representative example works just as well. The course uses an open learning format, which means that you work at your own pace with guidance from a trainer who answers your questions immediately. That way you take concrete solutions back to your workplace at the end of the day.

Pivot tables and formulas solve different problems. You use a pivot table to quickly group, filter and summarise large volumes of data without writing a formula yourself. You use functions such as SUMIF, COUNTIF and VLOOKUP when you want to include calculations in a fixed report or dashboard whose structure does not change. In practice you combine the two: you build a database, analyse it with pivot tables for exploration, and use functions for recurring calculations or key figures. That is why this course covers both, including database functions, calculated fields in pivot tables and slicers. If you only report, pivot tables are enough. If you also model or automate, you need the functions.

Copilot in Excel can suggest formulas, generate PivotTables and recognise patterns in data on the basis of a prompt. That only works well if you understand what you are asking and can check whether the outcome is correct. Without knowledge of functions, PivotTable structure and filters, you have no way of knowing whether Copilot is choosing the right fields or applying the wrong aggregation. In this course you first learn the logic behind formulas, databases and PivotTables. Copilot is covered optionally, as an accelerator on top of that basis. That order is deliberate: AI is an aid, not a replacement for insight. Anyone who relies on Copilot alone produces reports that look good but may be factually wrong. With the course behind you, you use Copilot in a more focused and faster way.
