Do you want to make your team more effective and improve the atmosphere? The Group Dynamics course gives you insight into group stages, team roles and interaction patterns. You will learn to analyse group behaviour, handle resistance and intervene purposefully when a process gets stuck.

Description

In this Group Dynamics course you gain insight into how groups form, develop and function. You learn to analyse group interaction, to recognise which patterns and team roles are at play and how you can respond to them as a manager or process facilitator.

You will work on skills for creating safety and trust within a team, giving feedback, dealing with resistance and intervening effectively when a group process gets stuck. You will also be given tools to maintain the balance between attention to the individual and attention to the group, and to motivate and influence employees at group level.

The course is practical in nature: you actively work on exercises and situations from your own working practice. An intake with the trainer maps out your personal learning objectives, so that the programme matches what you need.

Topics

During this course the following topics, among others, are covered:

  • Group formationthe phases in the group formation process and how to use them to guide your team.
  • Team roles: which roles are present within your team and how to combine them successfully.
  • Creating safety and trust: increasing engagement, expressing appreciation and promoting a positive working climate.
  • The power of the minority and subsystems: why you should include the minority in decisions taken by the majority.
  • Communicating: how you come across as a process facilitator in terms of content, relationship and procedure.
  • Motivating and influencing at group level: encouraging, convincing, exploring and inspiring.
  • Interaction patterns: consciously choosing how you position yourself, instead of being pushed into a position.
  • Attentionthe balance between individual attention and attention for the group.
  • Giving feedback and confronting: encouraging collaboration and constructively addressing undesirable behaviour.
  • Dealing with resistance: recognising resistance in yourself, the other person or the team and taking the tension out of it.
  • Intervening effectively: intervening when the group process gets stuck.
  • Coordinated improvisation: a mix of resilience, professional competence, self-confidence and confidence in your team.

Result

After this course you will have insight into the group formation process and the various team roles. You will be able to analyse, describe, identify and change group interaction. You will know how you come across as a manager and what your qualities and points for attention are. You will also know how to deal with resistance and when to use which intervention technique to take your team to a higher level.

Target audience

This course is particularly suitable for you if you want to gain insight into group dynamics and strengthen your team. Think of team leaders, managers, project managers, coaches and process facilitators who work with groups on a daily basis and want to get the best out of their team.

Teaching method

During this course you will actively work on your group dynamics skills. Beforehand, the trainer holds an intake interview with you in which your personal learning objectives are mapped out. On that basis, the trainer puts together the final programme.

You learn primarily by doing and experiencing. Through exercises, role plays and real-life situations you will experiment with new behaviour and new interventions. The trainer creates a safe atmosphere, so that you feel comfortable stepping outside your comfort zone.

We work with a maximum group size of eight participants. This leaves plenty of room for personal feedback, individual guidance and interaction with your fellow participants.

Prior knowledge

No specific prior knowledge is required for this course. You work with or within a team and want to get more of a grip on what goes on there. An open attitude and a willingness to practise with your own behaviour are enough to take part.

Comments

During the course you work in a small group of no more than eight participants, so that there is plenty of room for personal attention and practice. Before the course, the trainer will contact you to discuss your learning objectives and tailor the programme accordingly.

Who is the Group Dynamics course suitable for?
The Group Dynamics course is suitable for managers, team leaders, project managers, process facilitators and HR professionals who want to gain insight into group processes and strengthen their team. You will learn to analyse group interaction, recognise team roles and intervene effectively. The classroom course No specific prior education is required; work experience in a role in which you facilitate groups is an advantage.
Which topics are covered in the Group Dynamics course?
In the Group Dynamics course you cover group formation, team roles, interaction patterns, motivating at group level, giving feedback, dealing with resistance and making effective interventions. You also learn how to create safety and trust within your team and how to balance individual attention with attention to the group as a whole. The classroom course is delivered in groups of no more than eight participants.
What is the approach of the Group Dynamics course?
The Group Dynamics course has a maximum of eight participants. Beforehand, the trainer holds an intake interview to map out your personal learning objectives and tailor the programme. During the course the work is mainly active: you practise group interaction, interventions and feedback in a safe atmosphere, so that you can apply what you have learned directly to your own team.
Do you receive a certificate after the Group Dynamics course?
Yes, after completing the Group Dynamics course you receive a certificate of participation from Learnit. This certificate shows that you attended the full classroom course and gained knowledge about group formation, team roles, intervention techniques and guiding group processes. You can add the certificate to your LinkedIn profile or portfolio to make your development as a manager or process facilitator visible.
Can the Group Dynamics course also be taken in-company?
Yes, the Group Dynamics course can also be delivered in-company, at your organisation's premises. This is worth considering if you want to work on group processes, team roles and intervention techniques with an entire team or with several managers at once. The content then ties in directly with situations within your team. Contact us for a tailored quotation including dates, group size and programme.
What will I learn in the Group Dynamics course that I cannot get from a book or an e-learning?
You only really see group dynamics when you are in the middle of them. In this classroom course (maximum eight participants) you practise live with group processes that a book can only describe. You experience first-hand how interaction patterns arise, how resistance feels and how an intervention plays out in the group. The trainer observes your behaviour and gives immediate feedback on how you come across as a process facilitator. Something an e-learning cannot do. You work with stages of group formation, team roles and the power of the minority in concrete practice situations. A book gives you theory about Tuckman or Belbin; this course gives you the ability to recognise group behaviour and adjust it the moment it occurs.
When should you choose the Group Dynamics course and when a Team Coaching or Leadership course?
The Group Dynamics course focuses specifically on analysing and influencing group processes: group phases, team roles, interaction patterns and intervention techniques. You learn what happens beneath the surface of a team and how you can intervene. Choose this course if you notice that your team is stuck in patterns, that subgroups are forming or that you are losing your grip on the atmosphere. A Team Coaching course goes a step further in guiding team development as an external role, while Leadership is broader and also covers directing, appraising and individual conversations. Group Dynamics lasts and is classroom-based, in groups of no more than eight participants. It is an in-depth choice for managers, project leaders and process facilitators who want to increase their analytical ability at group level.
How do I know whether I am ready for the Group Dynamics course, or whether it would be better to acquire some basic knowledge first?
The Group Dynamics course is suitable if you already have some experience of guiding or leading a group. No prior training is required, but you do need a practical situation in which you observe group processes. For example as a team leader, project leader, trainer or process facilitator. During the course you work with models such as group phases, team roles and interaction patterns, and you practise intervention techniques at group level. If you have never led a team, a course on basic leadership or communication may be a more logical starting point. Not sure? In the intake the trainer maps out your learning objectives and determines together with you whether the level is a good fit. The maximum group size is eight participants, which leaves room to bring in your own cases. You will find the investment on the course page.
How can I measure whether my team has actually become more effective after the Group Dynamics course?
Effect is measured in behaviour, not in feeling. After the Group Dynamics course (classroom-based, maximum eight participants), you can observe concrete indicators in your team. Think of: shorter decision-making times, fewer recurring discussions about the same topics, more initiative from quieter team members (the 'minority'), and feedback expressed openly instead of in corridor conversations. During the course you learn to analyse, describe and name group interaction. That is your measuring instrument. In practical terms it works like this: before the course, note down three concrete patterns that bother you (for example 'the same two people talk 80% of the time'), and evaluate those patterns again after six to eight weeks. In addition, you can use a short team role inventory or a safety check before and afterwards. A measurable effect within one quarter is realistic, provided you actually apply the interventions.
As a manager, what should I prepare in advance to get the most out of the Group Dynamics course?
Two things will help you get the most out of this classroom course. Firstly: think beforehand of one specific team or group you are currently working with, including a situation that is stuck. During the course you analyse group interaction, team roles and interaction patterns. That works best with a case of your own. Secondly: in the intake with the trainer you set out your personal learning objectives. The final programme is determined on that basis. The more specific your question (for example 'my team keeps getting stuck in the storming phase' or 'I can't get a grip on a dominant subsystem'), the more precisely the trainer can respond. No further prior knowledge is required; the group is limited to eight participants, so there is room for individual cases.
Does the Group Dynamics course also work if I manage hybrid or remote teams, or is it mainly intended for teams that meet in person?
The Group Dynamics course is classroom-based. The models covered on group phases, team roles, interaction patterns, dealing with resistance and intervention techniques apply to every type of group, including hybrid and remote teams. The application does differ, however: in remote teams non-verbal signals are more limited, subgroups form more quickly via separate chat channels, and safety and trust are harder to build. During the intake you can indicate that your team works (partly) remotely, so that the trainer can tailor examples and exercises accordingly. The course therefore teaches you to recognise the underlying dynamics; how you shape interventions. Face-to-face, via video or asynchronously. You apply it to your own situation. For purely online team coaching tooling, this is not a technical course.
What does the Group Dynamics course cost and how long does it take?

You can find the current price at the top right of this course page, along with the schedule, location and delivery format. For in-company or bespoke courses we are happy to provide a quotation on request.
