Organisations change continuously and your employees feel it. In this course you will learn how to lead a change process in which people stay on board and resistance does not become a blockage.

Description

A reorganisation or major change affects people. Frustration, uncertainty and silent resistance are part of it, and as a manager you are right in the middle of the field of forces. How do you keep your team productive and engaged while also having to steer the hard side of the change process?

In this course you work on both sides of change. The soft side: how do you communicate, how do you create support, how do you deal with emotions and resistance. And the hard side: how do you design a change plan, how do you phase the process and how do you steer towards results. You gain insight into group processes and into your own style of leadership during a change process.

Afterwards you will have a workable plan for your own situation, a sharper picture of your role as a change agent and a set of skills to get your team on board.

Topics

  • Advantages and disadvantages of change and their effect on people
  • Formulating, communicating and achieving objectives
  • Creating support and tapping into motivation
  • Recognising and influencing group processes
  • Dealing with resistance and negativity
  • Phasing change processes: orientation, development, implementation
  • Designing and determining a course of action
  • Giving and receiving feedback
  • Influencing and persuading
  • Supporting your staff and being open to them
  • Office politics within organisations
  • Dealing with staff who are reluctant to move along

Result

After the course you will know how to approach a change process or reorganisation from start to finish. You will be able to design and implement a change plan, create support within your team and deal effectively with resistance. You will recognise group dynamics and know how to respond to them. You will also have insight into your own management style and know where your strengths lie and where there is room to grow.

Target audience

This course is intended for managers, team leaders and coordinators who are responsible for a change process or who are in the middle of one. Whether you are encountering resistance, want to involve your team more closely in upcoming changes, or want to project more confidence in your approach: on this course you work on your own case and on your role as an agent of change.

Teaching method

You work in a small group of no more than eight participants, so there is room for your situation and for practice. Before the course, the trainer discusses your personal learning objectives in an intake, so that the programme matches what you need. We work actively: doing and experiencing are central, with plenty of room to practise with your own cases in a safe atmosphere.

Prior knowledge

You hold a management role or are about to take one on. No specific prior knowledge is required.

Language

The training is given in Dutch as standard. The trainer has a good command of English. English-language course material can be used. With a minimum enrolment of 3 participants, the training can also be given entirely in English.

She shaped the course around these topics, among other things. This made the course more targeted. In addition, there were four of us in total, so our learning objectives were covered intensively. Definitely a good course!”

  • “During this course, theory and practical examples alternated nicely! The theory discussed reinforced my conviction as to why you can act in a particular way in certain situations. I thought the trainer came across as very professional. You can tell she really knows what she is talking about and that she was very good at responding to what we needed at that moment. Sometimes, for example, we discussed a particular situation that had occurred at work: she would then immediately come up with practical tools we could use next time we found ourselves in such a situation. She was also good at connecting the theory to practice. The practical examples made the theory much clearer to me.”

Frequently asked questions

This course is intended for managers, team leaders and coordinators who have to lead a change process or reorganisation, or who are in the middle of one. If you want to involve your team more closely in upcoming changes or get a better grip on resistance, you are in the right place too.

You learn to recognise where resistance comes from, what forms it can take and how to respond to it effectively. You practise conversations in which you allow space for dissatisfaction without letting go of the course you have set, and you learn how to bring people along step by step in a change process.

You will work on designing a change plan, phasing a change process, building support, motivating staff, group processes, feedback and influencing. The political game within organisations and dealing with employees who are reluctant to change are also covered.

No, no specific prior knowledge is required. It is useful, however, if you hold a management role or will shortly take one on, so that you can apply what you learn directly to your own situation.

The group consists of a maximum of eight participants. This leaves room for your own cases, personal feedback and plenty of opportunities to practise.

Yes, after taking part you will receive a Learnit certificate of participation.

In regular management you mainly steer towards continuity and results within familiar frameworks. In leading change you steer people through uncertainty: you have to explain why something is changing, create support for something that is not yet self-evident and deal with the emotions that come with change. That calls for different communication and a sharper role as an agent of change.

Support starts with a clear story: why something is changing, what that means in concrete terms and what everyone's role is. After that it is a matter of listening, making room for concerns and, where possible, letting people think along about the how. During the course you practise these conversations and building a communication approach that suits your organisation.

A change process broadly runs through three phases: orientation (why is change needed, where do we want to go), development (how are we going to approach it, who does what) and implementation (carrying out, adjusting and embedding). In each phase you have a different role as a manager and different interventions are effective. You learn to recognise these phases and address them purposefully.

Start by understanding why someone is not coming along with you: is it a lack of clarity, fear, a lack of skills or a fundamentally different view? Only then can you act purposefully, from offering extra support to setting limits on behaviour. During the course you work with examples from your own practice and practise these conversations.

The course is offered in a classroom setting at several locations in the Netherlands and is also available as an in-company programme or as a bespoke solution for your organisation. Current dates and locations can be found on this course page.

You can find the current price at the top right of this course page, along with the schedule, location and delivery format. For in-company or bespoke courses we are happy to provide a quotation on request.
