You go deeper into HTML and CSS, and learn how to use these languages specifically for email formatting. Topics covered include email properties, modular development, responsive design, project management and optimising images.

You will also look at which tools professionals use to set up the development process efficiently, and how to work with online CMS systems, click rates and subscription management. In addition, you will cover testing emails, creating a plain text version and techniques that prompt recipients to take action.

The course is taught according to the Open Learning format. This means you tailor the content, pace and depth to your own learning objectives and prior knowledge. You receive a book with exercises and practice files that you can use as a reference work after the course.

How long does the HTML email course last and what is the delivery format?
The HTML email course lasts three days and is taught in the Open Learning format. This means you work at your own pace and the content is tailored to your learning objectives. You receive personal guidance from an experienced trainer. During the course you cover HTML, CSS, responsive design, testing and useful tools for creating professional HTML newsletters.
What prior knowledge do you need for the HTML email course?
No specific prior knowledge is required for the HTML email course. Basic computer experience and an interest in web technology are enough. Previous knowledge of HTML or CSS is handy, but not a requirement. The course is taught in the Open Learning format, so the content and pace are matched to your level and learning objectives. That way you work towards professional HTML newsletters from your own starting point.
Which topics are covered during the HTML email course?
During the HTML email course you learn to work with HTML and CSS, email properties, various HTML editors and modular development. Project management, SEO, image optimisation, responsive design and techniques for prompting action are also covered. You gain insight into testing, plain text emails, online CMS systems, click rates and subscription management. In this way you build a complete foundation for professional HTML newsletters.
Who is the HTML email course suitable for?
The HTML email course is suitable for anyone who wants to create professional HTML newsletters and emails without reinventing the wheel. Think of web designers, marketers, communications staff and webmasters who want to adapt templates or build from scratch. You can work on both PC and Mac. Basic knowledge of HTML and CSS is useful, but not a strict requirement thanks to the open learning format.
Do you receive course materials with the HTML email course?
Yes, at the start of the HTML email course you receive a clearly structured book with exercises and practice files. You use this material during the course to work directly on practical examples. Afterwards you keep the book as a reference work, so you can quickly look up later how to build an HTML newsletter, apply CSS or make it responsive.
Can the HTML email course also be taken in-company or tailored to your needs?
Yes, you can also take the HTML email course as an in-company or bespoke programme. Because the course is taught in the Open Learning format, the content always matches your working situation and objectives. Would you like to work on this with a team, or tailor the course to a specific newsletter project? Get in touch via the course page for the options and a tailored quote.
What will you learn in this course that you can't get from an online tutorial?
HTML email differs from ordinary web development, and it is precisely those differences that you grasp more quickly in a course than through individual tutorials. You learn why tables are still used for email, how to apply inline CSS and which properties do and do not work in clients such as Outlook, Gmail and Apple Mail. The course also covers topics that tutorials rarely address in a coherent way: modular development, responsive design for email, testing across multiple clients, plain-text versions, click rates and subscription management via online CMS systems. Because the course is taught using the Open Learning format, you can bring in your own template or newsletter and receive direct feedback from an experienced trainer. That speeds up the learning process compared with self-study, where you often only discover that something does not work once you send it.
When should you choose an HTML email course instead of a ready-made tool such as Mailchimp or a WordPress plugin?
Tools such as Mailchimp, Brevo or WordPress plugins take a lot of work off your hands, but you get stuck as soon as you want to adapt a template, build your own design or sort out an email that doesn't display properly in Outlook. That's when you need a knowledge of HTML and CSS. This course makes sense if you produce newsletters on a regular basis and want to get a grip on the code, or if you work in a team where the marketer uses a tool and you are responsible for the technology behind it. You will learn how email HTML differs from web HTML, how to design responsively for mobile and how to test in different clients. If you only use standard templates without any adaptations, a tool-based course will be enough. If you want to build your own or adapt templates, this course in an open learning format is the right choice.
What about responsive design and testing in email clients during the HTML email course?
Responsive design and testing are standard parts of the course. You learn how to build an HTML email that adapts to different screen sizes, from desktop to mobile. This matters because email clients render HTML and CSS differently: Outlook, Gmail, Apple Mail and mobile apps sometimes display the same code in different ways. During the course you look at techniques such as table-based layouts, inline CSS and media queries, and at ways to test your email before sending. Plain text as a fallback is also covered. Because the course is taught according to the Open Learning Format, you can spend extra time on this if you mainly produce newsletters for a mobile audience. That is what sets it apart from a general HTML course, in which email-specific quirks are usually not addressed.
Does the HTML knowledge from this course also work in modern email clients such as Outlook, Gmail and Apple Mail, or is email HTML outdated?
Email HTML is still a separate field with its own rules. Browsers have fully embraced CSS3 and flexbox, but email clients lag far behind: Outlook still uses the Word rendering engine, Gmail strips out CSS in the head, while Apple Mail does render a lot of modern CSS. That is why in email you often work with inline CSS and sometimes even with table-based layouts, long after these have become outdated on the web. During the course you learn to recognise and resolve these differences, including responsive design for mobile clients and a plain-text version as a fallback. You also cover test tools that show you how your email looks in each client. The knowledge is therefore very up to date, precisely because email HTML follows its own, more conservative standard than web development.
What is the difference between building an HTML email and creating an ordinary web page?
HTML email and web design look similar on the surface, but work very differently in practice. A web page is rendered in modern browsers that largely follow the same standards. Email clients such as Outlook, Gmail and Apple Mail each interpret HTML and CSS slightly differently. As a result, for email you have to fall back on older techniques: layout with tables instead of flexbox, inline CSS instead of a stylesheet, and limited use of modern CSS properties. During the course you learn these specific rules, plus topics that are unique to email: image optimisation, plain-text versions, click rates, subscription management and testing in multiple clients. Anyone who only builds websites will quickly run into trouble with rendering differences between clients without this knowledge.
After this course, will you be able to set up a complete HTML newsletter independently, or will you still need a designer or developer?
After the HTML email course you can independently build, test and send a working HTML newsletter. You learn the HTML and CSS building blocks specifically required for email, modular structure, responsive design and testing in different email clients. For the graphic design (house style, imagery, copy) a designer or marketer remains valuable, but you can take the technical implementation into your own hands. If you work with an existing template from Mailchimp or WordPress, after the course you can adjust it yourself instead of calling in a developer for every change. For very complex campaigns with advanced personalisation or integrations, external expertise remains useful, but standard newsletters and marketing emails you produce on your own.
