Around 70% of your message is conveyed through body language. Would you like to know what you unconsciously radiate and what the other person is telling you non-verbally? In this course you work on your own posture and learn to read other people's signals. Indispensable in any business conversation.

Description

You convey around 70% of your message through non-verbal communication. Body language often reveals more than you think, because it is a direct response to your emotions and thoughts. This largely happens unconsciously, which is why insight into both your own body language and that of others gives you something to hold on to during (business) conversations.

In this course you become aware of your own body language and gain more control over the impression you make. You work on your image and practise with posture, facial expression and gestures. You also learn to read other people's body language, so that you can respond well to it during a conversation. Attention is paid to the first impression, sending and receiving, and the signals that arise when words and body language do not match.

The course alternates between experiencing, experimenting with new behaviour, reflecting and theory. The active working method means you notice straight away what effect a different attitude or presence has, and you can translate what you have learned directly into your own practice.

Topics

  • Why first impressions matter so much
  • Sending and receiving
  • Getting to know and adjusting your own body language
  • Recognising and interpreting other people's body language
  • What incongruence between the spoken word and body language looks like
  • Working on your image and presence
  • Using body language in business conversations, presentations and video calls

Result

After this course you are aware of your own body language and know which signals you send out unconsciously. You have more control over what you convey and can use your posture, gestures and facial expression to reinforce your message.

You will also read other people's body language better. You recognise signals, see when words and posture do not match and respond appropriately during conversations. This means you conduct business conversations with more confidence and persuasiveness.

Target audience

This course is suitable for anyone who wants more insight into their own body language and its effect on others. You might take this course if you want to improve your body language, for example, or if you feel unsure about the way you present yourself and want to change that.

Teaching method

In this course you alternate between concrete experience, experimenting with behaviour and techniques, reflection and exploring theory. This means the programme suits different types of participant well. There is a great deal of activity in the course, so that you actually experience the effect of new behaviour. In this way you recognise your own success and can build on it.

We emphasise that you are responsible for your own development and take ownership of it. You are invited to reflect continuously and to make connections with your own practice. The aim is to increase your insight and to let you make the translation to your own situation yourself. That increases the chance of genuine behavioural change.

Prior knowledge

No specific prior knowledge is required for this course. So there is nothing you need to study beforehand. What you do bring: your own experiences from conversations and the wish to deal more consciously with your body language.

An individual intake takes place beforehand, in which your personal learning objectives are discussed.
Which topics are covered during the Body Language course?

The classroom-based course combines theory with plenty of practical exercises.
Do you receive a certificate after the Body Language course?
Yes, on completion of the Body Language course you receive a certificate of participation from Learnit. This certificate demonstrates your active participation in the course and is a valuable addition to your CV or LinkedIn profile. It shows that you work consciously on your non-verbal communication and professional presence in business conversations.

What is the difference between the Body Language course and a short online course on non-verbal communication?
An online course or video course on non-verbal communication mainly gives you knowledge: you learn which signals exist and what they mean. Learnit's classroom Body Language course focuses on something else: experiencing and practising. You convey roughly 70% of your message non-verbally, and this largely happens unconsciously. That is why in this course you alternate between concrete experience, experimenting with behaviour, reflecting and exploring theory. You receive direct feedback from the trainer and fellow participants on your posture, facial expression and use of voice. You also practise recognising incongruence between words and body language in others. Choose self-study if you are only looking for knowledge. Choose the classroom course if you genuinely want to change the impression you make.
When do you choose a classroom Body Language course rather than self-study through books or YouTube?
Self-study works perfectly well for learning the theory of non-verbal communication: you read about micro-expressions, posture and mirroring. The difficulty is that you use your own body language largely unconsciously. Without external feedback, you don't know how you come across to others. The classroom-based Body Language course is suitable if you genuinely want to change your behaviour. You experiment with new behaviour in a group, receive direct feedback from a trainer and fellow participants, and practise reading other people's signals. Incongruence between words and body language is also easier to spot through live observation than on video. Choose self-study if you want to understand how it works. Choose the classroom-based course if you want to experience how you do it yourself and what you can adjust.
How quickly can you apply what you have learned after the Body Language course in real conversations?
You can start applying what you have learned immediately after the course. The course is built around concrete experience, experimenting with behaviour and reflection, so you practise new techniques in practical situations during the course itself. Simple insights, such as working consciously on your first impression or recognising incongruence between words and body language, can be applied in business conversations from day one. Reading other people's body language fluently and adjusting your own presence naturally usually takes a few weeks of conscious practice in real situations. The course provides the framework and the awareness; the actual change in behaviour comes about through repetition in the workplace. Taking ownership of your own development is a key principle of the course.
What does the Body Language course teach you that you would not get so explicitly in a general communication course?
A general communication course often covers conversation skills, feedback and listening, with non-verbal communication as just one element. Learnit's Body Language course focuses entirely on that non-verbal layer, which according to research accounts for around 70% of your message. You work specifically on four things: consciously observing your own body language, decoding other people's signals, recognising incongruence between words and body, and managing the effect of your first impression. The format is classroom-based and experience-led: you experiment with behaviour, receive immediate reflection from the trainer and fellow participants, and alternate this with theory. You rarely get that concentrated practice in the mirror of the group in a broad communication course. Choose this course if non-verbal impact is your main objective. Choose a broad communication course if you want to address your entire conversational repertoire.
Does this course also work if I am naturally shy or find it difficult to pay attention to myself in conversations?
Yes, in that case the Body Language course can be particularly useful. The course is explicitly aimed at participants who are unsure about how they present themselves and want to change that. You first work on becoming aware of your own signals (posture, facial expression, gestures) before you start experimenting with new behaviour. The method alternates between experiencing, practising, reflecting and theory, so that you can try out what suits you in a safe setting. Shy participants often benefit from the classroom set-up: you receive direct feedback and see in others how small adjustments already make a difference. No prior knowledge is required. In the intake beforehand you can indicate which situations you find difficult, so that the trainer can address these during the course.
How does this course compare with reading well-known books on body language, such as those by Allan Pease or Joe Navarro?
Books by authors such as Pease or Navarro give you a theoretical framework: what certain gestures, micro-expressions or postures can mean. That is useful background knowledge, but it is one-way traffic. In the classroom Body Language course you work on two things you will not get from a book. First: awareness of your own non-verbal signals, through exercises in which you receive immediate feedback from the trainer and your fellow participants. Second: recognising incongruence between the spoken word and body language in live interaction. We alternate between experiencing, experimenting, reflecting and theory. A book teaches you the vocabulary; the course teaches you to apply it under pressure. Combine the two for the best result.
