Python is one of the most popular programming languages worldwide, and for good reason. In this basic course you will master the fundamentals step by step, from syntax and data types to object-oriented programming. Ready for your first Python script?

Description

Python is one of the most widely used programming languages in the world. The software is free, the syntax is clear and you can build almost anything with it: from scripts and data analyses to apps and websites. In this course you take your first steps in Python, step by step.

You start with the structure of the language and setting up your development environment. After that you get to work with data types, control statements, modules, functions and parameters. In the second part of the course you dive into object-oriented programming and work with classes, inheritance, files, network modules and JSON.

Through a mix of theory, demonstrations and plenty of hands-on practice, you will quickly get to grips with programming in Python. You work in a small group under the guidance of an experienced trainer, on your own laptop or on a training laptop provided by Learnit.

What prior knowledge do you need for the Python Programming Basics course?
You do not need any programming experience for the Python Programming Basics course. The course is designed specifically for beginners and starts with the basics: from installing Python to writing your first functions. A logical way of thinking and basic computer experience are enough. Do you already have experience with another programming language? Then you will pick up the material even faster.
Which topics are covered in the Python Programming Basics course?
In the Python Programming Basics course you cover the complete basics of Python. You start with installation, syntax and development environments. You then learn to work with data types (number, string, list, set, dictionary), control statements, functions, modules and parameters. The second part focuses on object-oriented programming: classes, objects, inheritance, file I/O, network modules, requests and JSON.
Who is the Python Programming Basics course suitable for?
The Python Programming Basics course is suitable for anyone who wants to learn to program in Python, including those without programming experience. Think of junior developers, software architects, system administrators, data analysts and testers. If you want to understand colleagues' Python code or write scripts for your daily work, this course is also a good fit. You work in a small group with an experienced trainer.
Do you receive a certificate after the Python Programming Basics course?
Yes, on completing the Python Programming Basics course you receive the Learnit certificate of participation. This certificate confirms that you have mastered the basics of Python, including data types, functions and object-oriented programming. You can add it to your CV or LinkedIn profile, which improves your chances of a position as a (junior) Python developer.
Can you also take the Python Programming Basics course in-company or online?
Yes, besides the classroom version, the Python Programming Basics course is also available as an online course or in-company at your location. In every delivery format you work in a small group with an experienced trainer. In-company is worth considering from a few participants onwards and the content can be tailored to the practice within your organisation.
What is the difference between the Python Programming Basics course at Learnit and self-study via online tutorials?
Self-study using free tutorials works fine for a first introduction to Python, but you often get stuck on object-oriented programming, scope, exceptions and setting up a development environment correctly. The classroom Python Programming Basics course gives you a clear structure: introduction, data types and control statements on day 1, functions and modules on day 2, and object-oriented programming with classes, inheritance, file I/O, requests and JSON on day 3. You work in a small group with an experienced trainer who gives immediate feedback on your code. That speeds up the learning process considerably compared with self-study, where you often only discover incorrect assumptions weeks later. On completion you receive the Learnit certificate of participation. Choose self-study if you want to explore without commitment; choose this course if you want to write working Python code quickly.
When should you choose the classroom-based Python Programming Basics course at Learnit, and when does an online course or bootcamp make more sense?
The right choice depends on your learning objective and the time you have available. The classroom-based Python Programming Basics course at Learnit: you work in a small group with an experienced trainer who answers questions on the spot and gives feedback on your code. That makes sense if you need structure and guidance, and if you want a solid grounding in syntax, data types, functions and object-oriented programming. An online self-study course suits you better if you want to work at your own pace and don't need direct guidance. A bootcamp lasting several weeks is a better fit if your aim is to switch careers and become a developer, and you also want frameworks, projects and interview training. For a working grounding in Python, the classroom-based course is usually sufficient.
What can I build independently after Python Programming Basics at Learnit, and what not yet?
After the course you can write small Python scripts and console programs on your own. Think of a script that reads in files, filters data, performs a calculation or calls an API with the requests module and processes JSON. You work with data types, control statements, functions, your own classes and inheritance. File and network modules are also covered. What you will not yet be doing: building complete web applications with Django or Flask, data analysis with pandas and NumPy, machine learning with scikit-learn, or production deployments. That requires follow-up courses or self-study. The basics course gives you the foundation of object-oriented programming and the standard library, so that you can then choose a specialisation with a clear focus. The course is taught in a classroom setting in small groups.
How does the Python Programming Basics course at Learnit compare with a university programming course or an online certificate from, for example, Coursera?
The Python Programming Basics course at Learnit is a practical, classroom-based course aimed at working professionals who want to be able to work independently in Python quickly. A university programming course usually lasts a semester and places more emphasis on theory, algorithms and computer science. An online certificate via platforms such as Coursera or Udemy offers flexibility, but lacks direct guidance and feedback from a trainer. At Learnit you work in small groups with an experienced trainer who answers your questions immediately. The content is limited to the basics: syntax, data types, control statements, functions and object-oriented programming including inheritance, File I/O and JSON. For a deeper theoretical background or specialisation in, for example, data science, choose an academic route or a follow-up course.
What is the difference between learning object-oriented programming in the Python Programming Basics course and picking it up later in a follow-up course?
The Python Programming Basics course (classroom) covers object-oriented programming at an introductory level. You work with classes, objects, attributes, the docstring and inheritance. You also learn to work with File I/O, the sys and os modules, network modules, Requests and JSON. The emphasis is on understanding and first application, not on independently designing larger object-oriented applications. More in-depth topics such as design patterns, advanced inheritance structures, unit testing and package structure are not covered here; for those you need a follow-up course or practical experience. Choose this basics course if you want to recognise and read OOP concepts in Python. If you already have experience with functions and data types and want to move straight on to architecture and patterns, an advanced Python course is a better fit.
How soon after the Python Programming Basics course at Learnit can I build a script or small application on my own at work?
Straight away you can write smaller Python scripts independently: think of automating file operations with the os and sys modules, retrieving data via Requests, processing JSON files and building simple object-oriented structures with classes and inheritance. For production-ready applications you will usually need another 2 to 4 weeks of practice in your own working context. The course delivers and lasts classroom-based, with an experienced trainer and small groups. Compared with self-study via tutorials, this set-up mainly speeds up application: you receive direct feedback on your code. If you then want to build web applications or do data analysis, a follow-up course (focusing on Django or pandas, for example) is a logical next step.
How much does the Python Programming Basics course cost and how long does the course last?

You can find the current price at the top right of this course page, along with the schedule, location and delivery format. For in-company or bespoke courses we are happy to provide a quotation on request.
