With SharePoint you can set up a team site in no time to share, manage and retrieve information. In this basic course you explore both the user and the administrator side, so that afterwards you can get to work independently.

Description

In this SharePoint Basics course you get to work with Microsoft SharePoint, the platform you use to create team sites for finding, sharing and managing information. You look at SharePoint from two angles: as an end user and as an administrator who sets up and configures a site.

You work with the interface, libraries and lists, and you learn how to upload documents and check them in and out. You will also build a site: you create subsites and pages, add web apps and various types of content, and set up the navigation.

The course is taught in small groups, so that the trainer can respond to your working situation and learning needs. You can indicate which version of SharePoint you use (Microsoft 365, 2019 or 2016), so that you train in the software that matches your daily practice. You are welcome to bring your own practical examples, which makes the course even more concrete.

Topics

  • What SharePoint can do
  • The SharePoint interface
  • Customising the interface (Quick Launch and favourites)
  • The various libraries
  • Upload documents
  • Checking documents in and out
  • Working with lists
  • Setting up a site
  • Adding annotations
  • Creating a subsite (team site)
  • Adding web parts to your site
  • Adding pages
  • Determining the layout of a page
  • Adding different types of content
  • Setting up navigation

Result

After this course you will work with SharePoint with confidence. You can find, share and manage documents on a team site and know how to use libraries and lists in your work. You check documents in and out and adapt the interface to your own preferences.

You can also set up and configure a site yourself. You add subsites, pages, web apps and various types of content, arrange the navigation and ensure a logical structure. This means that afterwards you know both the user side and the administrator side of SharePoint.

Target audience

This course is intended for anyone who is going to work with SharePoint and wants to get to know both the user side and the administrator side. Think of employees who share documents and information with colleagues via a team site, and of people who want to set up and configure a site themselves. Prior knowledge of SharePoint is not required; experience with Windows and the internet is useful.

Teaching method

You follow the course in a classroom setting in a small group, guided by an experienced trainer. At the start you discuss your entry level together and what you want to get out of the course. After that you get to work actively yourself: you get to know SharePoint from both the user and the administrator side and practise directly with the right software version (Microsoft 365, 2019 or 2016).

Are you facing a specific situation in your day-to-day work? Feel free to bring that example along, so you can practise with it in a practical way during the course.

Prior knowledge

You do not need any specific prior knowledge. If you occasionally work with an internet browser and can handle basic word processing, you will be able to follow this course without difficulty. Do you already have experience with SharePoint as a user? A bonus, but not a requirement.

Comments

When you book, you indicate which version of SharePoint you use (Microsoft 365, 2019 or 2016). We tailor the course accordingly. Feel free to bring your own practical example, so that you can work even more specifically.

In-company

Would you like to organise this training for a whole group or several groups? This can be cost-effective. For example, we can tailor the content entirely to your organisation, and training a whole group is also cheaper.

Are you looking at large numbers of participants or a complete academy? That involves a great deal. Consider planning and communication, for example, or identifying and agreeing the objectives and content of the training. Or differences in level, feedback mechanisms and safeguarding. Fortunately, Learnit has extensive experience in this field (more than 25 years) and we are happy to help you through this process.

Frequently asked questions

You do not need any specific prior knowledge for the SharePoint Basics course. It is useful, however, if you are familiar with Windows and can use an internet browser. The course is suitable for both end users and novice administrators. At the start, the trainer discusses your entry level, so that in a small group you can work specifically on the topics that matter to you.

During the SharePoint Basics course you get to know both the user side and the administrator side of SharePoint. You work with libraries, upload and check documents in and out, and work with lists. You also set up a team site yourself, add pages and web apps, adjust the layout and configure the navigation. Afterwards you will be able to set up and manage a SharePoint site independently.

In the SharePoint Basics course you work with the version you use yourself: Microsoft 365, SharePoint 2019 or SharePoint 2016. When you register, you indicate which version you have. The planners then make sure you follow the course in the right software version. Are you using an earlier version? Then a suitable solution will be found together with you.

The SharePoint Basics course is suitable for anyone who wants to work with SharePoint both as a user and as an administrator of a team site. Think of employees who want to share and manage documents, or colleagues who set up and configure a site themselves. You follow the course in a classroom setting in a small group with personal guidance.

Yes, the SharePoint Basics course can also be taken in-company. You then receive the same classroom training course, but at your organisation's premises and fully tailored to your day-to-day practice. This is useful if you want to train several colleagues at the same time or if your SharePoint environment has specific points requiring attention. Contact us for a tailored quote.

Microsoft Learn is fine if you want to look up individual functions, but you miss the overview and the immediate feedback from a trainer. The classroom SharePoint Basics course covers both the user side (libraries, checking in and out, lists) and the administrator side (setting up a site, subsites, web parts, page layout and navigation). You work in a small group, in the SharePoint version you use yourself (Microsoft 365, 2019 or 2016), and you can bring your own practical examples from your working environment. Choose the classroom course if you want to be able to set up a team site within a working team, if you are unsure about the right structure for your organisation, or if you have questions a tutorial does not answer. For simply looking up one specific action, Microsoft Learn is sufficient.

The SharePoint Basics course covers both sides. On the user side, you learn to work in an existing team site: uploading documents, checking them in and out, working with libraries and lists, and adjusting the interface via quick launch and favourites. On the administrator side, you set up a site yourself, create a subsite, add pages and web parts, determine the page layout and set up the navigation. That distinction matters because most online tutorials focus on just one of the two roles. After this classroom day you will understand how a site administrator's choices affect day-to-day use, which is useful if you both contribute to a team site within your organisation and give input on how it is set up.

The SharePoint Basics course covers both using SharePoint and setting up and configuring your own team site. For most end users and small team administrators this is sufficient: afterwards you can manage documents, use lists, set up a subsite, add pages and configure navigation. A follow-up course only becomes worthwhile once you become responsible for SharePoint at organisational level, for example for permissions on a large scale, integrations with Microsoft 365 services such as Teams and Power Automate, or designing a site structure for hundreds of users. For that role, a separate administrator or architecture course makes more sense. Not sure? Bring along a concrete practical example from your working environment; the trainer can then tell you whether the basics are enough for your situation.

Yes, after the SharePoint Basics course you can set up and configure a team site for your department independently. You learn how to create a site, add a subsite, insert pages with various content, place web parts and set up the navigation. That covers the work an owner or editor of a team site normally does. What this basic course does not teach you is administration at tenant or organisation level: permission structures for the whole organisation, governance, connecting hub sites or integrations via PowerShell. That remains the domain of a SharePoint or Microsoft 365 administrator. For setting up a working team site for your team this course is sufficient; for central administration, additional knowledge is required.

You are welcome to bring a concrete practical example from your own working environment to the SharePoint Basics course. Think of a team site you want to set up, a library structure that is not working, or a list you want to configure for your department. At the start of the day, the trainer discusses your starting level and learning objectives, and can link exercises to your situation where possible. Because we work in small groups, there is room for individual questions. This is a difference with e-learning or the free Microsoft Learn tutorials: there you follow a fixed path, here you receive direct feedback on your own case. Please note: the course lasts, so very complex migrations or administration issues fall outside the scope of the basics course.

SharePoint, Teams and OneDrive are three collaboration tools within Microsoft 365, each with its own function. OneDrive is for personal file storage. Teams focuses on chat, meetings and direct collaboration. SharePoint is the underlying layer for team sites, document libraries, lists and intranet pages. Even the files you share in a Teams channel are technically stored in SharePoint. The SharePoint Basics course focuses entirely on SharePoint itself: libraries, checking documents in and out, lists, setting up a team site, subsites, pages, web parts and navigation. Teams and OneDrive are not covered separately. If you want to understand where your documents really are and how to set up a structured collaboration environment, this (classroom) course is the right choice.
