Quickly producing clear reports from large databases: that is where you want to get to. Microsoft SQL Report Builder gives you a fast, intuitive design environment with which you turn complex data into clear reports.

Description

SQL Report Builder is a stand-alone component of Microsoft SQL Server (SSRS) and offers you a wide range of visualisations, such as data bars, maps and sparklines. Microsoft has also made a report parts gallery available, so that you can reuse existing parts as building blocks for new reports.

During this course you work at your own pace on practical assignments, with guidance from an experienced trainer. Are you already running into specific issues in your work? Feel free to bring them along to the course. That way you work directly on situations you recognise.

At the end of the course you will be able to independently design, format and export complex reports from large databases.

Topics

  • Introduction Report Builder / Reporting Services
  • Getting the Data
  • Designing the Report
  • Formatting the Report
  • Adding Groups
  • Calculating Totals
  • Calculating Running Totals
  • Adding Graphs
  • Exporting the Data
  • Complex Exercise

Result

After this training course you can independently design and format reports in SQL Report Builder. You know how to retrieve and group data, calculate totals and add charts. You can also export reports in various formats and build complex reports that meet your organisation's information needs.

Target audience

This course is suitable for users who want to create reports themselves with Microsoft SQL Report Builder and Reporting Services. Think of data analysts, report builders, BI specialists and functional administrators who work with SQL Server databases.

Teaching method

You work in a small group on practical assignments at your own pace, with personal guidance from an experienced trainer. You receive a workbook with exercises and exercise files, which you can also use as a reference work after the course. As the software is in English, the course material is in English too.

Prior knowledge

Basic knowledge of SQL and databases is recommended. Experience with Microsoft SQL Server is a plus, but not a requirement.

Language

The training is given in Dutch as standard. The trainer has a good command of English. English-language course material can be used. With a minimum enrolment of 3 participants, the training can also be given entirely in English.

Frequently asked questions

You learn to design and format reports independently with Microsoft SQL Report Builder. Topics covered include: retrieving data, designing and formatting reports, adding groups, calculating totals and running totals, integrating charts and exporting reports. You finish with a complex exercise in which you bring everything together.

The course is intended for data analysts, report builders, BI staff and functional administrators who work with Microsoft SQL Server and want to create their own reports with Report Builder or Reporting Services (SSRS).

Basic knowledge of SQL and databases is recommended, as you will work with queries and datasets during the course. Experience with Microsoft SQL Server is useful, but not a strict requirement.

Yes, on completion you will receive a Learnit certificate of participation. This certificate confirms that you have attended the SQL Report Builder course.

Yes, we even recommend it. If you have already encountered specific reporting issues in your work, you can bring them along. That way you work directly on situations you recognise and apply what you have learnt straight away.

The course material is in English, because the software and terminology of Report Builder and Reporting Services are also in English. The course itself is given in Dutch.

Reporting Services (SSRS) is the broader platform within Microsoft SQL Server with which you publish and manage reports. Report Builder is the standalone design tool with which you build those reports visually. In the training course you get to know and use both.

Report Builder offers a wide choice of visualisations: tables, matrices, charts, data bars, sparklines, indicators and maps. In addition, you can use Microsoft's report parts gallery to reuse existing building blocks for new reports.

Yes, reports can be exported to various formats, including Excel, PDF, Word and CSV. During the course we cover how to do this and what to watch out for when formatting for different export formats.

SQL Report Builder is aimed at structured, pixel-perfect reporting (so-called paginated reports) from SQL Server databases. Power BI focuses more on interactive dashboards and data exploration. Both tools have their own strengths and are often used side by side within a single organisation.

Yes, this course is also available in-company. We can tailor the content to the databases and reporting issues within your organisation. Get in touch for a bespoke quotation.
