In you work under the guidance of an experienced trainer on building a solid foundation in SQL. You learn how relational databases work and write your own queries to retrieve, filter and edit data. Practical and directly applicable.

Description

In the SQL Basics course you learn to work with SQL under the guidance of an experienced database trainer. On the first day you become acquainted with various database systems and gain insight into the background and basic principles of SQL. You practise with simple queries to retrieve, sort, filter and group data.

On the second day you go into more advanced queries. You work with functions, calculations, subqueries and joins, and you learn how to add, modify and delete data. You are also introduced to creating and managing tables.

Thanks to the mix of theory, practical examples, demos and plenty of practice exercises, you will quickly master the most important functions of SQL. The course is practically oriented and useful for the most common relational database systems.

Topics

In this time you will master the basics of SQL. You will work on the following topics:

Day 1. Introduction to databases, SQL and simple queries

  • Introduction to databases: flat, hierarchical and relational
  • Different database systems (DBMS) and differences in SQL dialects
  • Data types and keys (primary key, foreign key)
  • Retrieving data (SELECT FROM, TOP, DISTINCT)
  • Sorting data (ORDER BY)
  • Grouping data (GROUP BY, HAVING)
  • Filtering data (WHERE, comparison operators, BETWEEN)
  • Filtering with wildcards (LIKE)

Day 2. More advanced SQL queries

  • Editing data with functions (ROUND, LTRIM, RTRIM, DATEPART)
  • Performing calculations (COUNT, SUM, AVG, MAX, MIN)
  • Working with subqueries (AND, OR, IN, NOT IN)
  • Combining tables (INNER JOIN, LEFT OUTER JOIN, RIGHT OUTER JOIN)
  • Adding data (INSERT INTO)
  • Modifying and deleting data (UPDATE, DELETE)
  • Creating, modifying and deleting tables (CREATE, ALTER, DROP)

Result

After the SQL Basics course:

you understand the importance and benefits of good data management, you understand how a database system works and can name the most commonly used DBMSs, you know the basic concepts of SQL, you can run simple queries in an SQL database, you add more value to data by carrying out simple data manipulations, and you increase your employability, for example as a data analyst, database administrator, database developer or programmer.

Target audience

Do you work with data, or would you like to? Then this SQL Basics course is for you. The course is suitable for anyone who wants to work with relational databases, such as Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle, MySQL, PostgreSQL, MariaDB, IBM Db2 or SQLite.

Functions such as:

data analyst, functional administrator, database administrator, information manager, system administrator, junior database developer, programmer.

You do not need any prior knowledge of SQL or databases. A little affinity with data and logical thinking is enough to keep up.

Teaching method

The SQL Basics course lasts 2 days and is given by an experienced database trainer. You work in a small group, so there is plenty of room for personal attention and questions from your own practice.

The teaching method alternates theory, demonstrations and, above all, plenty of practice exercises. This way you quickly master the most important functions of SQL. On day 1 you are introduced to database systems and practise with simple SQL queries. On day 2 you go into greater depth with more advanced queries, functions and combining tables.

During the course you will receive an English-language book with exercises and exercise files. You use this book during the course and afterwards as a reference work at your workplace.

Prior knowledge

You don't need any specific prior knowledge for this course. Can you work with a computer and are you interested in databases and data? Then you can simply join. We build everything up from the basics, so that you get a good grasp of the material.

Frequently asked questions

For the SQL Basics course you do not need any specific prior knowledge of SQL or databases. Basic computer skills are sufficient. The course starts at the beginning: you first learn how relational databases work and then build up your SQL skills step by step. The course is therefore suitable both for beginners and for professionals who want to formalise their knowledge.

The SQL Basics course covers the most important SQL topics in . Day 1: database systems, data types, keys and simple queries using SELECT, ORDER BY, GROUP BY, WHERE and LIKE. Day 2: more advanced queries with functions (ROUND, DATEPART), calculations (COUNT, SUM, AVG), subqueries, JOINs (INNER, LEFT, RIGHT) and modifying data and tables with INSERT, UPDATE, DELETE, CREATE, ALTER and DROP.

In the SQL Basics course you learn to work with all common relational database systems, including Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle, MySQL, PostgreSQL, IBM DB2 and SQLite. The course covers the standard SQL language and the differences between the various DBMSs. As a result, after classroom training you can get straight to work with virtually any SQL database you come across in your workplace.

The SQL Basics course is suitable for anyone who wants to learn to work with relational databases, without needing any prior knowledge of SQL. Think of functional administrators, data analysts, information managers, system administrators, aspiring database developers and programmers. This classroom course is also a good fit if your work increasingly requires you to retrieve data from a database.

Yes, on completion of the SQL Basics course you receive a certificate of participation. This certificate shows that you have attended the classroom course and have mastered the basics of SQL, including writing SELECT queries, filtering with WHERE, sorting, grouping and combining tables with JOINs. A useful piece of evidence for your CV or LinkedIn profile.

The classroom SQL Basics course You work under the guidance of an experienced database trainer and practise with assignments that you can link to your own daily work. That last point is the biggest difference with self-study via YouTube or an online course: you get direct feedback on your queries and can ask questions about your specific database situation. In you cover both the basics (SELECT, WHERE, ORDER BY, GROUP BY) and more advanced topics (JOINS, subqueries, INSERT, UPDATE, DELETE, CREATE). With self-study you are more inclined to click through without really practising. Choose the classroom option if you want to learn in a structured way and become productive quickly; choose self-study if your budget is limited and you are able to keep going in a disciplined way.

Immediately after the course you will be able to write simple to medium-sized SQL queries. On day 1 you practise with SELECT, WHERE, ORDER BY, GROUP BY and filtering with wildcards. On day 2 you work with JOINs, subqueries, aggregate functions (COUNT, SUM, AVG) and modifying data using INSERT, UPDATE and DELETE. Thanks to the alternation between theory, demos and plenty of practice assignments with exercise files, the material sinks in quickly. How smoothly you apply it in your own working environment depends on the database system (Microsoft SQL Server, MySQL, PostgreSQL, Oracle) and the complexity of your data model. Most participants are writing their own reporting queries within a week. For more complex matters such as stored procedures or performance tuning you will need a follow-up course; this is a basics course from.

The SQL Basics course covers standard SQL: the syntax and functions that work in virtually all relational database systems. Think of SELECT, WHERE, GROUP BY, JOIN, INSERT, UPDATE, DELETE and CREATE. That knowledge can be applied directly in Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle, MySQL, PostgreSQL, IBM Db2, Microsoft Access and SQLite. The trainer explicitly points out the differences between the dialects, so you know what to watch out for when moving between systems. Functions such as ROUND, LTRIM, RTRIM and DATEPART are covered; the exact name can differ slightly per DBMS (for example EXTRACT in PostgreSQL instead of DATEPART). The course material is in English, as is the software. After , you can start working with basic queries in any common DBMS.

In the classroom SQL Basics course at Learnit you get three things an online tutorial doesn't offer. First, direct feedback from an experienced database trainer on your queries, including an explanation of why a JOIN or WHERE clause could be written differently. Second, exercises linked to your own practical examples, so that the material matches the type of data you work with every day. Third, a fixed structure in which, in a small group, you work through all basic and more advanced topics from start to finish, from SELECT and WHERE to INNER JOIN, subqueries and INSERT/UPDATE/DELETE. You receive a reference work with exercises and practice files. A tutorial is free, but you miss the alignment with your context and the opportunity to ask questions.

Yes. SQL is the foundation of virtually every data analysis workflow, even if you later work with Power BI, Tableau or Python (pandas). In Power BI you retrieve data from databases using SQL queries, and in Python you use SQL to load data from a database into a DataFrame. The SQL Basics course teaches you how to build SELECT statements, filters (WHERE), groupings (GROUP BY) and joins (INNER JOIN, LEFT OUTER JOIN). You apply that knowledge directly in other tools. Many data analysts find that SQL lets them retrieve data more efficiently than a visual query builder or an export to Excel. The course is taught in a classroom setting.

The classroom-based SQL Basics course at Learnit is the right choice if you are enrolling individually, have no SQL experience yet and want to lay the groundwork. You will learn SELECT queries, filtering, grouping, joins and simple data manipulation with INSERT, UPDATE and DELETE. An in-company programme makes more sense when you want to learn together with a team of at least 4 to 6 colleagues, or if you want to practise on your own company database and data model. Do you already have the basics under control and are you working with window functions, complex subqueries or performance tuning? Then a follow-up SQL course is a better fit than a repeat of the basics. If you are unsure about your level, a short intake will help you start in the right variant.
