Stories stick, facts do not. In our Storytelling course you learn how to move, engage and connect with your audience through a strong story. Whether it is about you or about your organisation: your message really gets through.

Description

Stories stick, facts fade. In this Storytelling course you discover how to convey a message through a story that moves people, sticks with them and connects them to you.

You work on building a good story: a beginning, a middle and an end, a main character, a storyline with tension and emotion. You learn how to draw out stories from yourself or your organisation, how to tell them and how to spread them. It is precisely the struggles that turn out to be interesting, not the superlatives.

The course alternates between experiencing, experimenting, reflecting and theory. You practise a great deal, receive feedback and make the translation to your own practice yourself. This increases the chance that you will actually apply what you have learned in your work.

Topics

During this course the following topics, among others, are covered:

  • What do you want to convey with your story?
  • The structure of a story: beginning, middle and end
  • Working with a protagonist, storyline and tension
  • Using emotion and experience to move your audience
  • How do you tell a story convincingly?
  • Discovering your stories: from struggle to success
  • Spreading your story through the right channels
  • Engaging with your audience

Result

After this course you will tell compelling stories that make your message land. You know how to build a strong storyline, with a clear beginning, middle and end, and how to make room within it for emotion, tension and recognition.

You seek interaction with your audience and know how to hold their attention. Whether you want to convey your own story, that of your team or of your organisation: you connect people to you through what you tell them and how you tell it.

You also know how to spread your story through the channels that suit you, so that your message continues to stick with the people you want to reach after the course as well.

Target audience

This course is suitable for anyone who wants to use storytelling to attract attention and move people. You will probably recognise yourself in one or more of these points:

You want to convey the story of yourself or your organisation powerfully, you want to enthuse customers, colleagues or another audience, you want to speak with confidence and impact.

Do you work in marketing, communications or sales, or do you give presentations regularly? Then you will get a lot out of this course. As an entrepreneur or manager too, you learn how a good story creates connection and engages people.

Teaching method

In this course you alternate between concrete experience, experimenting with behaviour and techniques, reflection and exploring theory. This means the programme suits different types of participants. There is plenty of action in the course, so that you actually experience the effect of new behaviour. That way you recognise more quickly what works and what does not.

You are responsible for your own development and take ownership of it. During the course you are invited to reflect continuously and to make connections with your own practice. Our aim is to increase your insight and let you make the translation to your own situation yourself. That increases the chance of genuine behavioural change.

Prior knowledge

You do not need any specific prior knowledge for this course. If you want to learn how to convey your message more powerfully through a story, you are very welcome. An open attitude and the willingness to practise storytelling are more than enough.

In-company

Would you like to organise this training for a whole group or several groups? This can be cost-effective. For example, we can tailor the content entirely to your organisation, and training a whole group is also cheaper.

Are you looking at large numbers of participants or a complete academy? That involves a great deal. Consider planning and communication, for example, or identifying and agreeing the objectives and content of the training. Or differences in level, feedback mechanisms and safeguarding. Fortunately, Learnit has extensive experience in this field (more than 25 years) and we are happy to help you through this process.

    Frequently asked questions

The Storytelling course is suitable for anyone who wants to convey a message more powerfully through a story. Think of entrepreneurs, marketers, communications professionals, managers and speakers who want to make their organisation or themselves visible. You do not need any specific prior education. Do you want to enthuse customers, captivate an audience or tell your story more confidently? Then this classroom course fits your learning objectives well.

No, no specific prior knowledge is required for the Storytelling course. The course is suitable for anyone who wants to learn to tell a more engaging story, whether you are an entrepreneur, marketer, manager or professional. During an individual intake beforehand, you discuss your learning objectives and experience, so that the programme of this classroom course matches your starting point and your day-to-day practice.

During the Storytelling course you learn what you want to convey, how to build a story with a beginning, middle and end, and how to tell a story in a compelling way. You will also discover which stories you have to tell and how to spread them to your audience. This classroom course alternates between theory and practical exercises and reflection.

Yes, after completing the Storytelling course you receive a certificate of participation. You receive this when you have attended the full course day. The certificate confirms that you have followed the classroom course and have practised the techniques covered in story structure, storytelling skills and audience-focused communication.

The Storytelling course is taught in a classroom setting. You train together with other participants in a small group, guided by an experienced trainer. The classroom format suits the nature of storytelling: you practise telling stories live, receive immediate feedback and experience the effect of your story on a real audience.

You learn storytelling mainly by doing, by practising in front of a group and by getting direct feedback on your story, your voice and your body language. You will not get that from a book or an e-learning. Choose the classroom course if you want to practise your story out loud, experience how your audience reacts and learn how to build up interaction. During the course you alternate between experiencing, experimenting with techniques, reflecting and theory. A book or online course is more suitable if you only want to understand the theory, for example the structure of a story or the importance of emotion. Do you actually want to become a storyteller who holds an audience? Then practising in a group is more effective than self-study.

Learnit's Storytelling course is one in which you actively practise telling stories to an audience, including direct feedback from an experienced trainer and fellow participants. A book or video explains the theory (beginning-middle-end, protagonist, dramatic arc, emotion), but you only notice what works when you tell the story yourself and see how listeners respond. During the course you alternate between experiencing, experimenting with techniques, reflecting and theory. You practise with your own story about yourself or your organisation, including the struggles that make the story interesting. You also learn how to seek interaction with your audience. During the Storytelling course you actively practise with the structure of a story (beginning, middle, end), a protagonist, a narrative arc and evoking emotion. These are the elements that make a story stick, rather than a list of facts. You will also discover why it is precisely the struggles in a story that make your message interesting, and not the superlatives. Whether your story really sticks is something you notice in practice: you measure the effect by the reaction of your audience, the interaction that arises and the connection people feel with you or your organisation. The course is set up as a classroom course so that you receive immediate feedback on your own story and can experiment with new behaviour. Costs: for

A pitch or presentation training course focuses mainly on structure, posture and persuasiveness when delivering a short, often business-related message. Learnit's Storytelling course goes a layer deeper: you learn to build a story with a beginning, middle and end, a main character, and a storyline with tension and emotion. The focus is on experience and meaning, not on listing facts or USPs. The struggles within a story receive particular attention, because they make you or your organisation human. Choose Storytelling if you want your message to stick for longer, for example as a marketing instrument or to build a bond with customers and audiences. Choose a pitch or presentation training course if you mainly want to convey information clearly and confidently. The course is taught in a classroom setting.

Yes. Storytelling is a communication technique, not a marketing discipline. The course is useful for anyone who wants to convey a message clearly and with impact: project managers looking for support, HR professionals explaining change, entrepreneurs telling their company story, or managers who want to take their team along in a vision. The method (beginning-middle-end, main character, storyline with tension, emotion) works in any context in which you want to move people rather than simply inform them. In the Learnit course you work with a story from your own practice, so the exercises relate directly to your own working situation. The course is taught in a classroom setting. A marketing background is not required.

Learnit's Storytelling course is a classroom course in which theory and practice alternate. You work on five components: determining what you want to convey, the structure of a story (beginning, middle, end, protagonist, narrative arc, emotion), how to tell a story, discovering stories from your own work or organisation, and how to spread your story. The teaching method combines concrete experience, experimenting with behaviour and techniques, reflection and theory. This means that you tell stories yourself, receive feedback and adjust immediately, rather than just listening. Beforehand, an individual intake takes place in which your learning objectives are identified; the final programme is adapted accordingly. So you go home with stories you have practised, not just with theory.
