Word is the program you use every day to create, format and share documents. In this course you get a firm grasp of the basics and optionally also work with Copilot in Word. That way you work faster and with more enjoyment.

Description

In this Word Basics course you get to grips with all the basic skills of Microsoft Word. You learn to open and save documents and to navigate through your text easily. You also work on neat formatting using text styles, paragraph settings, bullet points and alignment.

You discover how to add images, tables and charts, and how to save time with cut, copy and paste. You work through the various menus and tabs, so you understand how Word is structured and where to find everything.

Keyboard shortcuts, the spelling and grammar checker, generating a table of contents and creating a mailing are also covered. You will learn to share and print documents, so that afterwards you work with Word quickly and confidently.

This course optionally covers working with Microsoft 365 Copilot in Word, so you can experience how this AI assistant helps you write and edit your documents.

  • Entering and formatting text and navigating within a document
  • Getting to know the Word interface and tabs
  • Opening, saving and sharing documents via Backstage
  • Working with paragraph formatting: tabs, bullet points and alignment

  • Inserting images, tables, charts and screenshots
  • Generating a table of contents
  • Applying spelling and grammar checks

Result

After this course you will work confidently with Word. You enter text, navigate quickly through your document and format your text with a neat layout. You add images, tables and a table of contents, and apply styles for a consistent end result. With keyboard shortcuts, the spelling checker and other handy tools you work considerably more efficiently. You also know how to share documents and set up a mail merge. Have you opted for the optional Copilot module? Then you will also use the AI assistant in Word to draft and improve texts more quickly.

Target audience

This course is intended for anyone who is starting out with Word, or would like to, and wants to get a firm grasp of the basic skills. Whether you are just beginning or have picked up a few things yourself and want to refresh your knowledge: you will learn how to enter, format and neatly present text. Interested in working with AI? You can optionally also get to know Microsoft 365 Copilot in Word.

Teaching method

You follow this course in our open learning format: a full course day on which you work in a small group at your own workstation. You work through the course material at your own pace, while an experienced trainer is beside you to answer questions and help you further.

At the start of the day you discuss with the trainer what you can already do and what you want to get out of the course. That way you focus on the topics that matter to you. Theory and practice alternate continuously, so you apply what you learn directly in Word.

Would you also like to get to know Microsoft 365 Copilot in Word? You can arrange this with your trainer as an option and include it during your course day.

Prior knowledge

You do not need any prior knowledge of Word. If you can use a computer, you can take this course. We start with the basics and build up step by step, so that you become familiar with the programme at your own pace.

Comments

In this course you work at your own pace under the guidance of an experienced trainer. At the start you discuss your entry level and your learning objectives, so you can focus on the topics that matter to you. When booking, you indicate which version of Word you use, so that you work with suitable course materials. Optionally, you also cover Word in combination with Microsoft 365 Copilot.

Course format

This training is offered on the basis of our Open Learning teaching method. This means that you work independently, with active guidance from our trainer, to master the material. That way you can achieve your learning objectives at your own pace, without being held back by fellow participants working faster or slower. The trainer makes sure that you stay on schedule and meet your learning objectives. This form of learning leaves room for a tailored approach. You have the opportunity to bring in examples from your own practice and IT environment, so that your learning is even more specific. more...

In-company

Would you like to organise this training for a whole group or several groups? This can be cost-effective. For example, we can tailor the content entirely to your organisation, and training a whole group is also cheaper.

Are you looking at large numbers of participants or a complete academy? That involves a great deal. Consider planning and communication, for example, or identifying and agreeing the objectives and content of the training. Or differences in level, feedback mechanisms and safeguarding. Fortunately, Learnit has extensive experience in this field (more than 25 years) and we are happy to help you through this process.

  • “For years I hated the word processing programme ‘Microsoft Word’. I felt unwell at the very thought of having to write a letter in ‘Word’ with photos, tables and so on. I would sooner write a letter in Excel, because I could handle that better. That fear has now gone; it was simply a lack of knowledge. I had never really taken the time to get to grips with the programme. I started out using the wrong order of work when setting up a document, and that resulted in frustration with all the consequences that entails.”

I was trained years ago on the Office 2003 package, and Office 2010 does differ quite a lot from the 2003 version, which means it often takes more time to find out where they have hidden that one button or function this time. Frequently asked questions

In the Word Basics course you learn all the basic skills of Microsoft Word. You practise entering, formatting and saving text, navigating through documents, working with keyboard shortcuts, adding images and tables, applying styles and creating a table of contents. The spelling checker and creating a mail merge are also covered. Optionally, you can give attention to Word with Copilot.

The Word Basics course takes one day and is offered in the open learning format. This means that you work through the course material independently in a small group, while an experienced trainer is continuously on hand to answer your questions. You set your own pace and can focus on the topics that matter to you.

No, the Word Basics course requires no prior knowledge of Word. You only need to be familiar with the basics of Windows, such as opening and saving files. The course starts at your own entry level: the trainer discusses beforehand what you can already do and what you want to work towards. That way the pace matches your situation.

Yes, the Word Basics course optionally covers Microsoft 365 Copilot in Word. You learn how to use the AI assistant to draft, summarise or rewrite texts. Indicate when you register that you are interested in this, and the trainer will adapt the exercises accordingly. A Copilot licence via your employer is recommended.

Yes, with the Word Basics course you receive course materials that match your version of Word, and afterwards you receive a certificate of participation. The materials are yours to keep, so you can go over everything again later at your leisure. During booking you tell us your version, so that you work with exercises that match the software on your own computer exactly.

The Word Basics course is suitable for all modern versions of Word, including Microsoft 365, Word 2021 and Word 2019. When you book, you indicate which version you use. Our planners then make sure you receive the course materials that match your version exactly, so you can practise straight away in the environment you have at your workplace.

Self-study via videos works perfectly well if you want to look up individual actions, such as setting up a table. A classroom Word Basics course delivers something different: structure, context and a trainer who answers your questions on the spot. In one day you learn how Word is set up in full, from the interface and backstage view to styles, tables of contents and mail merges. At the start, the trainer establishes your starting level together with you and adapts the exercises accordingly. That saves fragmented searching afterwards. Choose the classroom course if you use Word every day and want to work faster and more consistently with keyboard shortcuts, formatting and styles. Choose self-study if you occasionally want to carry out one specific task and have no need for an overview or guidance.

In the open learning format of Word Basics you spend a full day working independently on assignments, at your own pace and in your own version of Word. An experienced trainer circulates and helps you as soon as you get stuck or have a question. You decide which topics to go through in more depth and which to complete more quickly. In a classroom course the group follows a fixed lesson plan and the trainer sets the pace. That works well if you want structure, but less so if your prior knowledge is unevenly spread across the topics. The open learning format suits you if you want to work on specific Word skills, such as styles, tables of contents or mailings, without being tied to the pace of others. You finish the day with practical skills that you can apply directly in your work.

The time savings come mainly from three areas: keyboard shortcuts, styles and formatting automation. Anyone who learns Word with keyboard shortcuts (such as Ctrl+C, Ctrl+V, Ctrl+Z, Ctrl+B and Ctrl+Shift+S for styles) saves on average 20 to 30 per cent of time per document compared with using the mouse only. Working with text styles instead of manual formatting saves a great deal more on longer documents, because a table of contents is then generated automatically. During the course you practise these techniques directly on your own documents or comparable ones. The gain does not lie in a single trick, but in the combination of structure (styles), speed (keyboard shortcuts) and tools (spell check, mail merge, tables). Most participants notice the effect in the week after the course, as soon as they rebuild their first own document using the approach they have learnt.

You spend a full course day in a classroom with other participants, each following their own programme. An experienced trainer walks around, answers your questions and helps you along as soon as you get stuck. You work through the course material at your own pace and can bring your own documents to practise on directly. Are you stuck on a particular layout, a table of contents or a mail merge? Then the trainer will tackle it with you. This differs from a classroom course, where everyone covers the same topic at the same time. The open learning format therefore adapts to your working situation, not the other way around. In practical terms this means: you go home with answers to your own Word questions, not just with general theory.

In the open learning format you set your own pace and can spend more time on individual topics. The trainer is present all day to help you one-to-one, so if styles, sections or mail merge require more explanation, you get it straight away. You skip the parts you already know and spend extra time on what you find difficult. This differs from a classroom course with a fixed lesson plan, where the group moves on together and difficult topics are covered at a set moment. In a fixed group, you run the risk that your questions go unanswered until a break or the end of the day. In the open learning format you can also repeat a topic with different exercises until you have mastered it. You go home having mastered the parts that matter for your work.

Copilot is the AI assistant in Word that can write, summarise, rewrite or adjust the tone of texts for you. You type an instruction in plain language, for example 'write a formal letter about an invoice' or 'summarise this document in five bullet points', and Copilot produces a draft that you then refine yourself. In the Word Basics course we cover Copilot optionally. That means: if you have a Microsoft 365 licence with Copilot, the trainer will show you how to use it alongside the standard Word functions. If you do not have a Copilot licence, you focus on the regular basic skills. For a beginner, Copilot is useful as soon as you know the Word interface. After all, you need to understand what Copilot produces and how to format, check and save the result. That is why Copilot is only covered once the basics are in place.
