Do you want to persuade others without manipulating them? In the course Influencing skills and powers of persuasion you develop your own style. You work on negotiating, motivating and dealing with resistance. Always from a win-win perspective.

Description

In this course you work on your ability to influence others in a respectful and effective way. You explore your own influencing style and discover how to apply it deliberately in a variety of workplace situations.

You will work on themes such as negotiating, communicating powerfully, motivating and leading. The win-win approach is central throughout: you learn how to make an impact without manipulating. Topics covered include the interplay of push and pull energy, speaking with enthusiasm, applying unconscious techniques such as framing and priming, dealing with resistance and influencing attitudes.

The course is set up to be practical and interactive. You practise with realistic situations in a safe learning environment, so that you can apply what you have learned directly in your day-to-day work. At the end you draw up a personal action plan to embed your new skills.

Topics

During this course you work on a broad range of influencing skills. The following topics are covered:

  • Insight into the game of influencing and consciously switching between your perspective and that of the other person
  • Speaking in an enthusiastic and motivating way using storytelling, use of voice and non-verbal signals
  • Recognising push and pull energy and using it purposefully
  • Negotiating and dealing with differing interests
  • Setting boundaries and giving feedback according to the principle of "hard on the content, soft on the relationship"
  • Motivating at individual and group level
  • Influencing through attitude change and building trust
  • Unconscious influencing techniques such as framing and priming
  • Dealing effectively with resistance and turning it into cooperation
  • Drawing up a personal action plan to apply what you have learnt straight away

Result

After this course you influence others in a respectful way, without manipulation. You deploy various influencing skills consciously and effectively, and you know how to inspire, involve and connect with others. You have developed your own influencing style and apply it with confidence in conversations, negotiations and collaborations.

You will also switch smoothly between push and pull energy, deal constructively with resistance and steer conversations towards win-win outcomes. With your personal action plan in hand, you apply the skills you have learned directly in your work.

Target audience

This course is intended for specialists, experts, managers and (starting) internal and external advisers who want to strengthen their influencing skills. Do you recognise yourself in one or more of the following points?

You want to develop and strengthen your talent for influencing, you want to come across as more confident and decisive, and you want to exert influence more quickly and effectively in conversations, meetings and negotiations.

Do you work a lot with colleagues, clients or stakeholders with differing interests? Then this course will help you to achieve your goals with more impact and persuasiveness.

Teaching method

The course is practical and interactive: you learn by doing and experiencing. Beforehand, we map out your personal learning objectives during an intake, so that the programme matches your situation.

During the two course days you alternate theory with exercises, role plays and reflection on your own cases. You experiment with different influencing styles and receive direct feedback from the trainer and your fellow participants. With a maximum group size of eight participants, there is plenty of room for personal attention and a safe atmosphere in which to practise.

You finish the course with a personal action plan, which allows you to apply what you have learned in your work straight away.

Prior knowledge

No specific prior knowledge is required for this course. It is useful, however, if your work regularly involves collaborating, consulting or coordinating with others. That way you can link what you have learnt directly to situations you recognise yourself.

In-company

Would you like to organise this training for a whole group or several groups? This can be cost-effective. For example, we can tailor the content entirely to your organisation, and training a whole group is also cheaper.

Are you looking at large numbers of participants or a complete academy? That involves a great deal. Consider planning and communication, for example, or identifying and agreeing the objectives and content of the training. Or differences in level, feedback mechanisms and safeguarding. Fortunately, Learnit has extensive experience in this field (more than 25 years) and we are happy to help you through this process.

The calm manner of the facilitator created a sense of safety. That made it possible for me to open up more and really immerse myself in the material. The theory was explained quickly and clearly, after which we took plenty of time to practise and apply what we had learned directly to real-life situations. Frequently asked questions

The course is suitable for specialists, experts, managers and (new) internal and external advisers who want to exert influence more confidently and effectively. No specific prior education is required. The course works with a maximum group size of eight participants, so that you can practise with your own practical situations and influencing style in a safe setting.

In the Influencing Skills and Persuasiveness course you learn, among other things, how to negotiate, speak in a motivating way, deal with resistance and apply push and pull energy. You also gain insight into unconscious influencing techniques such as framing and priming, setting boundaries and giving feedback. You finish with a personal action plan for immediate application in practice.

No, no specific prior knowledge is required for the Influencing Skills and Persuasiveness course. The classroom course is suitable for specialists, managers and (junior) advisers who want to strengthen their persuasiveness. Beforehand, an intake takes place in which your learning objectives are discussed, so that the programme matches your situation and experience.

The course is taught in a classroom setting in a small group of no more than eight participants. This limited group size ensures sufficient personal attention, room to practise with real-life situations and a safe learning environment. Prior to the course, an intake takes place so that your learning objectives can be incorporated into the programme.

Yes, after the Influencing Skills and Persuasiveness course you receive a certificate of participation. This certificate shows that you took an active part in both course days and practised the skills covered, such as negotiating, dealing with resistance and communicating in a motivating way. The course material is included.

Influencing Skills and Persuasiveness is broader than a purely assertiveness or negotiation course. Assertiveness focuses mainly on setting boundaries and standing up for yourself. Negotiating is about reaching an agreement between parties with differing interests. This classroom-based course combines both and adds elements such as push and pull energy, framing and priming, motivating at group level, dealing with resistance and changing attitudes. You work from the win-win principle and the premise of 'hard on the content, soft on the relationship'. The course is therefore suitable if you not only want to defend your position or close a deal, but want to exert influence on colleagues, clients or teams on a structural basis. You finish with a personal action plan.

The course is built around immediate applicability. You practise with realistic work situations during the course and finish with a personal action plan, so that the very next day you can start experimenting with techniques such as pushing and pulling energy, framing or the principle of 'tough on the content, gentle on the relationship'. Expect simple techniques (asking questions when you meet resistance, deliberately switching between perspectives) to become routine within a week. More complex skills such as negotiating from interests or changing attitudes require more repetition. Count on several weeks of conscious practice in real conversations. The small group of no more than eight participants ensures you get enough practice time per technique, which speeds up the transfer to everyday practice compared with larger classroom courses.

A book or online course gives you theory and models, but no feedback on your own behaviour. In this classroom-based course you practise influencing techniques in a group of no more than eight participants, with direct feedback from the trainer and fellow participants. You experiment live with push and pull energy, framing, dealing with resistance and negotiating from win-win situations. Before the course there is an intake to incorporate your learning objectives into the programme, something self-study does not offer. On day two you draw up a personal action plan for application in your work. Choose self-study if you mainly want to acquire knowledge; choose this course if you genuinely want to change your behaviour and approach with guidance.

Yes. The course is explicitly designed for specialists, experts and (new) internal and external advisers. Roles in which you exert influence without hierarchical power. That is precisely where influencing is crucial: you have no formal mandate, so you work with content, relationship and motivation. Over the two course days (classroom-based, maximum eight participants) you learn techniques such as push and pull energy, switching between your own goals and the other person's interests, and the principle of 'hard on the content, soft on the relationship'. That last point is particularly useful when you have to convince colleagues or stakeholders who do not report to you. During the intake beforehand you can put forward cases from your own working practice, so that the exercises match situations without positional power.

Yes. The course works from win-win as its starting point, but explicitly covers both push energy (direct, goal-oriented, setting boundaries) and pull energy (inviting, attracting, giving space). You learn to switch between the two depending on the situation and the person you are speaking to. Specifically, the course covers: negotiating where interests conflict, setting boundaries according to the principle of 'hard on the content, soft on the relationship', and dealing with resistance without damaging the relationship. In this context, win-win does not mean 'always compromising', but getting interests clear and looking for an outcome that holds up. The course lasts two days and is given in a classroom setting in groups of no more than eight participants, so that you can try out these techniques in practice situations.

The course explicitly covers unconscious influencing techniques: framing, priming and the use of non-verbal signals. The difference with manipulation lies in the intention and the framework. Learnit works on the principle of win-win situations: you use these techniques to convey your message more clearly, not to steer the other person against their own interests. In concrete terms, you learn how to phrase a question or proposal (framing), how context affects the way it is received (priming) and how your voice and posture support your words. You also practise attitude change through empathy and trust, aimed at lasting change rather than short-term pressure. The course is delivered in a classroom setting in groups of no more than eight participants.
