Budget monitoring is the ongoing process in which you check, throughout the project, whether the actual expenditure remains within the agreed budget. Financial reporting is the periodic reporting on this to clients, the steering group or the finance department. The two are closely linked: without proper monitoring you have no reliable reporting.

How do you deal with unforeseen expenditure in a project?

You should partly cover unforeseen expenditure by including a realistic contingency item at the start of your project, often a percentage of the total budget. It is also important to identify financial risks in advance and to make clear agreements about who decides in the event of overspending. In the course you learn how to approach this in practice.

What is a preparation budget and when do you use it?

A preparation budget is a budget allocated in advance to fund the preparatory phase of a project, for example for research, design or drawing up a project plan. It is often used for larger projects where research is needed before the full project budget can be determined.

What role does the controller have within a project?

On behalf of the organisation, the controller safeguards the financial parameters and provides objective reports on the progress and expenditure of the project. For you as a project leader the controller is an important sounding board: good cooperation leads to better figures, early identification of risks and support for your financial choices.

You work on a realistic project plan, learn to draw up investment analyses and practise monitoring the budget throughout the life of your project. You also look at preparatory credits, subsidies and working together with the finance department or controller. Practical checklists and overviews help you apply what you have learned directly in your own work.

Afterwards you will have a solid grounding in financial project leadership and can steer confidently on the figures behind your project.
