As an experienced project leader, you want to grow further in your role. In this course you work on your personal leadership style, learn how to motivate team members and convey your ideas convincingly. That way you become the driving force behind every successful project.

Description

You already have experience of managing projects and want to grow further in your role as a project leader. This Project Leadership course centres on your personal leadership style, because the way you lead largely determines the success of a project.

You work on conveying your ideas convincingly, so that you can enthuse and motivate your team members. You also learn to recognise individual qualities and bring out the best in people. Contact with the client is covered as well: how do you keep this effective and pleasant?

Theory is alternated with exercises and role plays. Through analyses and self-reflection you discover which leadership style suits you best. Afterwards you will have considerably sharpened your capabilities as a project leader and you will know how to become, and remain, an important force within your team.

Topics

  • The various roles of a project leader
  • Creating an efficient division of work
  • Handling conflict within your team
  • Putting your ideas across convincingly
  • Inspiring and motivating team members
  • Providing effective direction
  • Giving and receiving feedback
  • Managing and steering projects professionally
  • Liaising effectively with your client
  • Discovering and sharpening your personal leadership style

Result

After this course you will lead your projects more effectively. You know your own leadership style and how to use it to enthuse and motivate your team. You put ideas across convincingly, recognise the individual qualities of your team members and bring out the best in people.

You will also handle conflicts better, divide work more efficiently and give and receive feedback constructively. Contact with your client will run more smoothly too. The result: a motivated team, strong project results and more satisfaction in your work as a project leader.

Target audience

This course is ideally suited to project leaders and managers who already have experience of managing projects and want to develop further. You want to lead with more impact, really get your team moving and sharpen your own leadership style.

Teaching method

You work in a small group under the guidance of an experienced trainer. We alternate theory with practical exercises, role plays and self-reflection, so you experience straight away what works for you. Your own leadership style is central: through analyses and feedback you discover which approach suits you best.

You will work on situations from your own day-to-day practice, so you can apply what you have learnt in your projects straight away. Afterwards, you will receive a certificate of attendance.

Prior knowledge

You already have experience of managing projects and want to grow further in your role as project leader. No specific prior education is required. An open attitude and the willingness to look at your own leadership style will help you most.

In-company

Would you like to organise this training for a whole group or several groups? This can be cost-effective. For example, we can tailor the content entirely to your organisation, and training a whole group is also cheaper.

Are you looking at large numbers of participants or a complete academy? That involves a great deal. Consider planning and communication, for example, or identifying and agreeing the objectives and content of the training. Or differences in level, feedback mechanisms and safeguarding. Fortunately, Learnit has extensive experience in this field (more than 25 years) and we are happy to help you through this process.

    Frequently asked questions

The Project Leadership course is intended for project leaders and managers who already have experience of managing projects and want to develop further in their role. You do not need any specific prior education, but practical experience with projects is important. During the course your personal leadership style is central, so that you lead your team more effectively.

In the Project Leadership course you cover eight core topics: the various roles of a project leader, dividing work efficiently, handling conflict, putting ideas across convincingly, inspiring and motivating team members, providing effective direction, giving and receiving feedback, and managing projects professionally. Theory alternates with exercises and role plays, with your own leadership style as the focal point.

The Project Leadership course is taught in a classroom setting in a small group. Guided by an experienced trainer, you work with theory, exercises and role plays in which your own leadership style takes centre stage. Afterwards you receive a certificate of participation, and course material is included.

Yes, the Project Leadership course can also be delivered in-company at your own location. This is worth considering if you want to train several project leaders within your organisation at the same time. The content of the course remains the same, but the exercises and role plays are tailored to recognisable situations from your own projects. Request a tailored quotation for the exact investment and scheduling.

You improve your leadership style through self-reflection, analyses and practical exercises. In the Project Leadership course you discover, through role plays and feedback, which style suits you best. You learn to make use of your strengths, recognise pitfalls and consciously adjust your behaviour to your team and your client. In this way you grow into an authentic, effective project leader.

A book or online course works fine for taking in theory about leadership styles. For actually developing your personal style as a project leader, self-study falls short, because you get no direct feedback on your behaviour. In Learnit's classroom Project Leadership course you practise through role-play with situations such as handling conflict, giving feedback, managing clients and motivating team members. An experienced trainer and fellow participants mirror your behaviour, so that you discover which style suits you. Choose a classroom course if you already have project experience and want to work specifically on your effectiveness in difficult conversations. Choose self-study if you purely want to gain knowledge about project methodologies.

A project management course such as Prince2 or IPMA focuses on methodology: phasing, control aspects, risk analysis and documentation. You learn how to structure a project according to a fixed framework and usually finish with an exam and certification. Learnit's Project Leadership course focuses on the behavioural side of project leadership. You work on your personal leadership style, conveying ideas convincingly, motivating team members, handling conflict, giving and receiving feedback and the relationship with your client. You do not receive a methodological certificate, but a certificate of participation. Choose Prince2 or IPMA if you want to master the structure of projects. Choose Project Leadership if you already know the methodology and want to grow in the human side of your role.

The Project Leadership course is aimed at project leaders who already have experience of managing projects. You work on your personal leadership style, not on the basics of working in projects. Concretely: do you know the phases of a project, do you know how to draw up a plan and have you already led a team? Then this course is right for you. If you find yourself hesitating over questions such as 'how do I define scope?' or 'how do I carry out a risk analysis?', first choose a basic project management course or a methodical course such as PRINCE2 Foundation or IPMA-D. Project Leadership will then deliver more, because you can focus on the behavioural side: communicating convincingly, motivating team members, handling conflict and dealing effectively with the client.

After the classroom course, you will understand your own leadership style and know how to apply it deliberately in different project situations. Specifically, you will go home with: a clear picture of the roles a project leader fulfils, a method for dividing tasks efficiently based on individual strengths, techniques for making conflicts within your team open to discussion, and tools for giving and receiving feedback. You will have practised presenting ideas convincingly to team members and clients through role plays. Unlike a method-based course such as PRINCE2, this course focuses mainly on the human aspect: motivating, steering and building support, including course materials and a certificate of attendance.

Project Leadership at Learnit alternates theory with exercises, role plays and reflection. It broadly consists of short blocks of theory (the roles of a project leader, providing direction, feedback, conflict handling) followed by practical exercises in which you apply this material directly. Because the groups are small, there is plenty of room for your own working situations: difficult clients, a team member who will not budge, or a project that threatens to overrun. You can put these cases forward beforehand and during the course. The days are not consecutive, so in between you can test what you have learnt in your own project and discuss it in the next session. This differs from a workshop, where time for personal reflection and practice with your own cases is often lacking.

Learnit runs the Project Leadership course in small groups. That is a deliberate choice: the course revolves around your personal leadership style, which you develop through exercises, role plays, analyses and self-reflection. In a large group you simply would not get enough speaking time for that. A small group means the trainer can observe your style, that you can genuinely bring in your own cases and that you get several turns during role plays. This is where the difference with a conference or webinar on leadership is greatest: there you listen, here you practise. The course is classroom-based. If you want to work on leadership with your entire project team at once, an in-company version is a more logical choice than booking on a scheduled course.

You can find the current price at the top right of this course page, along with the schedule, location and delivery format. For in-company or bespoke courses we are happy to provide a quotation on request.
