A good project plan is the basis for a successful project. You learn how to structure a project plan, which chapters belong in it and how to write it so that the client and the team know exactly where they stand.

Description

The success of your project depends on the way you prepare, structure and control it. The project plan is your most important document in this. It describes what you are going to do, why, with whom, and at what cost and risk.

In this course you work on a complete chapter structure for a workable project plan. For each section you learn what belongs in it and how to make it concrete for your own project. Theory is consistently linked to your own working situation, so you can apply what you learn straight away.

A distinctive feature of this course is the two digital feedback moments. After the course day you write your own draft project plan. Two weeks later you submit it digitally and receive extensive feedback from the trainer by email. You then develop your plan further and submit it once more for a final round of feedback.

Topics

  • Structure and chapter layout of a plan of action
  • Describing the background and rationale of the project
  • Formulating objectives and problem definitions
  • Getting the project assignment clear
  • Mapping out project activities
  • Setting out project boundaries and preconditions
  • Products and deliverables
  • Quality requirements and quality control
  • Setting up the project organisation
  • Planning and phasing
  • Mapping out costs and benefits
  • Risk analysis and control measures
  • Drawing up a complete project plan for your own project

Result

After the course you can write a sound project plan for projects of limited complexity. You phase, plan and control your project in a structured way, and you communicate more effectively with your client and the other parties involved. You know which elements belong in a project plan, how to complete them and how to avoid overlooking anything.

Target audience

The course is intended for (prospective) project leaders and project managers in profit and non-profit organisations who have to write project plans themselves. It is also suitable for employees who regularly lead projects without a formal project management background.

Teaching method

The course is set up interactively. Theory alternates with assignments and feedback loops to your own working situation. You work in a small group with personal attention from an experienced trainer. After the course day you receive digital feedback twice on your own draft project plan, so that you can make targeted adjustments and develop your plan further.

Prior knowledge

No specific prior knowledge is required. Some work experience with projects, or having taken part in one, is an advantage.

Writing a Project Plan course: average 8.4 from 2 reviews

"Pleasant, interactive course with an experienced teacher."

Participant

“The 'Writing a Project Plan' course is ideally suited to those who have completed the 'Project Management' course or who are encountering project-based working for the first time. The interactive way of teaching, and in particular the follow-up (writing a project plan for an existing or fictitious project as a homework assignment, which the trainer then comments on), makes the course highly instructive and above all practically applicable.”

8.3

"The course was very instructive. Theory and practice were combined extremely well. It was very pleasant to be taught in a small group, which gave me even more opportunity to achieve my learning objectives."

Participant

"The materials (the book, the videos and the downloads) are very good. They alone give you solid tools to get started with a book. Hans focused mainly on the most important matters and we worked through a number of assignments. Those really stuck. I now know what matters at the start of my project and I can use the templates that LearnIt provides. I can also call on Hans along the way. That is very pleasant and personal!"

What do you learn in the Writing a Project Plan course?

You will learn how to draw up a solid project plan for projects of limited complexity. You will work through a complete chapter structure, from objective and project assignment to planning, costs, quality and risk analysis. You apply it directly to your own project and, after the course day, you receive digital feedback on your draft twice.

Who is this course for?

The course is intended for (prospective) project leaders and project managers in profit and non-profit organisations. Employees who regularly lead projects without formal project management training will also get a great deal out of it. You do not need any specific prior knowledge, but some experience with projects is useful.

Which elements belong in a project plan?

A good plan of action includes, among other things, the background, objectives and problem definition, project assignment, activities, project boundaries and preconditions, deliverables, quality requirements, project organisation, planning, costs and benefits, and a risk analysis. During the course you learn what belongs in each section and how to make it concrete.

Do I receive feedback on my own project plan?

Yes. After the course day you write your own draft project plan and submit it digitally. The trainer will provide you with extensive feedback by email. You then have time to develop your plan further and submit it once more for a second round of feedback.

How many participants are there in a group?

We work with small groups of no more than ten participants. This leaves plenty of room for personal attention and allows us to link the material closely to your own project and working situation.

Do I receive a certificate on completion?

Yes. On completing the course you receive a Learnit certificate of participation. It states that you have attended the Writing a Project Plan course.

What is the difference between a project plan and a plan of approach?

In practice the terms are often used interchangeably. A plan of action is usually a more concise document focusing on the approach to a specific project, whereas a project plan is sometimes broader and more extensive. In this course we focus on the plan of action as a practical working document for projects of limited complexity.

How long does it take to write a project plan?

That depends on the size and complexity of your project. For a relatively small project, a solid first version often takes you one to three working days. By using the structure and checklists from the course you work faster and miss fewer components.

Is this course also suitable for large or complex projects?

The course focuses on projects of limited complexity. The structure and principles you learn can also serve as a basis for larger projects, but for highly complex projects additional knowledge of, for example, PRINCE2 or programme management is useful.

What is a good way to include a risk analysis in your project plan?

A workable approach is to estimate the likelihood and impact of each risk and to link a control measure to it. In the course you will receive a practical format with which you can incorporate risks clearly into your project plan, so that your client can see at a glance which risks are involved and how you are managing them.

Can I also take this course in-company?

Yes. We also deliver the Writing a Project Plan course in-company, at your organisation's premises. We then tailor the content to the projects and templates that are common within your organisation. Contact us to discuss the options.

What does the Writing a Project Plan course cost?

You can find the current price at the top right of this course page, along with the schedule, location and delivery format. For in-company or bespoke courses we are happy to provide a quotation on request.
