Worrying keeps you stuck in thoughts that get you nowhere. With Albert Ellis's REBT method you gain a grip on limiting beliefs and turn them into effective thoughts. You become more confident, more flexible and more decisive.

Description

Worrying, doubting and feeling unsure of yourself: often it is not the events themselves that throw you off balance, but the way you think about them. In this course REBT: Stop worrying you will work with Rational Emotive Therapy, developed by psychologist Albert Ellis.

You will learn to recognise and analyse unhelpful thoughts and beliefs using the A-B-C model. You will gain insight into irrational thought patterns such as catastrophic thinking, perfectionism and a low frustration tolerance, and you will practise turning these thoughts into more effective alternatives.

The course alternates theory with practical exercises, self-reflection and experimenting with new behaviour. You work with your own RET model and apply what you have learnt directly to situations from your day-to-day practice. The course is led by psychologists specialising in personal development.

Topics

  • Limiting beliefs and assumptions
  • The REBT method
  • The A-B-C model of REBT: event (A), thoughts (B), behaviour and/or emotions (C)
  • Rational and irrational thoughts
  • Flawed reasoning
  • Fanatical perfectionism
  • Catastrophic thinking
  • Low frustration tolerance
  • Demands on others
  • Practising with your own REBT model

Result

After this course you will recognise your own limiting thoughts and know how to turn them into effective, helpful ones. You will work independently with the RET A-B-C model and apply it to situations from your own practice.

You will act with more confidence, flexibility and decisiveness. Worrying, perfectionism and catastrophic thinking will have less of a hold on you, so you make choices more calmly and reach your personal goals more easily.

Target audience

This course is suitable for anyone who suffers from worrying or unhelpful thoughts. You may recognise yourself in one or more of these situations:

You are a perfectionist and set the bar high for yourself, you find it difficult to say 'no' or to disappoint people, you dread speaking in front of a group, you find it hard to delegate tasks or to take on a conflict, you feel that others easily walk all over you, you want to go through life more confidently, more flexibly and more decisively.

No prior knowledge is required. All you need to bring is a willingness to look critically at your own thoughts.

Teaching method

During the course we alternate between concrete experience, experimenting with behaviour and techniques, reflection and exploring theory. This means the programme suits a range of different participants. There is plenty of action in the course, so that you actually experience the effect of new behaviour. This makes it possible to recognise success. We also emphasise that everyone is responsible for their own development and must take ownership of it. During our course we invite you to reflect continuously and to make connections with your own practice. Our aim is to increase your insight and to let you make the translation to your own situation. This increases the likelihood of real behavioural change.

Prior knowledge

You do not need any prior knowledge to take part in this course. An open attitude and a willingness to look at your own thoughts and behaviour are enough. You learn the rest during the course.

In-company

Would you like to organise this training for a whole group or several groups? This can be cost-effective. For example, we can tailor the content entirely to your organisation, and training a whole group is also cheaper.

Are you looking at large numbers of participants or a complete academy? That involves a great deal. Consider planning and communication, for example, or identifying and agreeing the objectives and content of the training. Or differences in level, feedback mechanisms and safeguarding. Fortunately, Learnit has extensive experience in this field (more than 25 years) and we are happy to help you through this process.

Frequently asked questions

The course is suitable for anyone who struggles with worrying, perfectionism or unhelpful thoughts. You may recognise yourself in having difficulty saying 'no', disappointing people, delegating, tackling conflicts or speaking in front of a group. No prior knowledge is required. The course is taught in a classroom setting by psychologists specialising in personal development.

In the REBT: Stop Worrying course you will learn to work with Albert Ellis's A-B-C model: activating event (A), beliefs (B) and behaviour or emotions (C). You will recognise irrational thoughts such as catastrophic thinking, fanatical perfectionism, low frustration tolerance and demands on others. You will then practise with your own REBT model to turn unhelpful beliefs into effective behaviour.

No, no prior knowledge is required for the RET: Stop Worrying course. The course is open to anyone who wants to break the habit of worrying. You work through Albert Ellis's RET method in a classroom setting, guided by a psychologist. An individual intake takes place beforehand, so that the programme matches your personal learning objectives and your own situation in practice.

The course lasts 2 days and is taught in a classroom setting by a psychologist specialising in personal development. You alternate between theory, self-reflection, practising with real-life situations and experimenting with new behaviour. Using Albert Ellis's A-B-C model, you analyse limiting thoughts and turn them into more effective beliefs.

The RET: Stop Worrying course is led by psychologists who specialise in personal development courses. They know Albert Ellis's RET method inside out and know how to turn limiting thoughts around in practice. So you get an experienced trainer who moves smoothly between theory, exercises and reflection in a classroom setting of.

RET (Rational Emotive Therapy) focuses specifically on recognising and turning around irrational thoughts, whereas mindfulness mainly teaches you to observe thoughts without judgement. With RET you work actively with the A-B-C model: you analyse the event (A), the thought about it (B) and the resulting behaviour or emotion (C). You then deliberately challenge limiting beliefs, such as catastrophising or fierce perfectionism. Mindfulness teaches you to accept; RET teaches you to restructure. The methodology was developed by psychologist Albert Ellis and at Learnit it is taught by psychologists. Choose RET if you want to stop worrying in concrete terms by changing your thinking patterns. Choose mindfulness if you mainly want to train calm and attention. The course lasts 2 days and is taught in a classroom setting.

A self-help book or online programme on REBT gives you the theory and some exercises, but you apply it to your own thinking on your own. That works if you are mainly looking for insight and are disciplined enough to practise by yourself. In Learnit's classroom-based REBT course you work with a psychologist who helps you recognise your own limiting beliefs, you get immediate feedback on your A-B-C scheme and you practise in real-life situations with other participants. Choose the course if you notice that reading alone does not lead to behavioural change, if you get stuck on persistent patterns such as perfectionism or catastrophising, or if you benefit from personal guidance and practice in a group. For a general interest in REBT, a book will usually suffice.

After the course you will recognise your own unhelpful thoughts and be able to turn them into rational alternatives using Albert Ellis's A-B-C model. In practical terms this means: you will recognise faulty reasoning, catastrophising, fanatical perfectionism and low frustration tolerance in yourself, and you will apply the REBT model to real situations from your work or private life. You will have practised with real-life situations in which you previously got stuck, for example saying 'no', delegating or tackling a conflict. The course is taught in a classroom setting by a psychologist specialising in personal development. This is a deliberate choice: one is too short to genuinely break through thought patterns, because practising in real life between the course days is a fixed part of the method.

REBT (Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy) is originally a therapeutic method developed by psychologist Albert Ellis, but at Learnit it is a training course for personal development. Not a treatment. The course lasts 2 days and is taught in a classroom setting by psychologists who specialise in personal development training. You work as a group with the A-B-C model, practise with your own real-life situations and find recognition among fellow participants with comparable patterns. An individual coaching or therapy programme goes deeper into your personal history and is more appropriate for complaints such as anxiety disorders, depression or trauma. Choose the REBT course if you want a grip on worrying, perfectionism or catastrophic thinking in a work or private context. In the case of more serious psychological complaints we will refer you to a GP or psychologist.

Yes, the REBT method works regardless of your working situation, because it addresses your thoughts. Not your working environment. When working hybrid or from home in particular, you often worry more: less feedback from colleagues, a vaguer distinction between work and private life, and more room for ongoing streams of thought. During the course (p.p., classroom-based) you learn to apply the A-B-C model to concrete situations: an unanswered Teams message (A), your interpretation 'my colleague is annoyed' (B), and the resulting worrying (C). You practise recognising catastrophising, perfectionism and low frustration tolerance. Patterns that tip over more quickly in a home-working setting. The course does not give you tips for organising your diary; it gives you a way of thinking that works in any context, including at your own desk.

The RET method you learn in this course is in principle domain-independent. Albert Ellis developed RET as a general method for turning irrational thoughts into rational ones, regardless of the subject. The A-B-C model (event-thought-consequence) works just as well for a difficult conversation with your manager as it does for worrying about your family or your health. During the course you practise with your own RET models, and you decide for yourself which situations to bring in. Many participants work on a mix of work-related and personal themes, particularly around perfectionism, saying 'no' and not wanting to disappoint people. The course is taught in a classroom setting by psychologists who specialise in personal development.
