First impressions are often formed within a few seconds. During a job interview, that first impression determines how much scope you are then given to show who you are. In this course you learn to take and use that scope deliberately.

Description

A job interview is to a large extent a presentation of yourself. Who are you, what can you do, and why does that fit this position? In the Successful Job Applications course you work on four pillars that together determine how you come across: self-knowledge, presentation, persuasiveness and preparation.

You practise common and difficult interview questions, learn how to structure your answers and how to steer the conversation back to your strengths. You also gain insight into body language, use of voice and personal presentation, so that you come across as calm and confident from the moment you walk in.

  • Self-knowledge: why do you want this job and why are you the right person?
  • Presentation: how do you come across in terms of attitude, voice and presence?
  • Persuasiveness: how do you tell your story and answer questions incisively?
  • Preparation: how do you research the company, the role and the person you will be speaking to?

Topics

  • Preparation: getting to grips with the company, the role and your interviewer
  • Body language: posture, gaze and presence
  • Personal presentation: clothing and grooming
  • Use of voice: pace, volume and intonation
  • Introducing yourself: a short and strong story
  • Pitfalls: what you had better not do or say
  • Practice conversation: common and difficult questions
  • Asking questions yourself: showing that you are interested
  • Cover letter and CV: matching the vacancy

Result

After this course you will walk into a job interview with a clear story about who you are and what you have to offer. You will know how to make a strong first impression, bring calm to the conversation and answer difficult questions composedly. You will have practised your presentation and use of voice, and you will be able to tailor your preparation specifically to the company and the role you are applying for.

Target audience

This course is intended for anyone who wants to improve their chances on the job market. Whether you have just finished your studies, are applying again after a long period with the same employer, or find that you receive plenty of invitations but rarely the job: you will learn how to make interviews work in your favour. Also suitable if you find that nerves get in your way during an interview.

Teaching method

The course has a practical set-up. You alternate between short pieces of theory, exercises and role plays in which you hold conversations with the trainer and the other participants. After each exercise you reflect on what worked and what could be done differently, so that you immediately notice the effect of new behaviour.

The group is small, which leaves plenty of room for personal feedback and for your own job application situation. You work with examples from your own practice and practise with questions you can expect in real interviews.

Prior knowledge

No prior knowledge is required for this course. It is useful to have a current job application or vacancy to hand so that you can use it in the exercises.

In-company

Would you like to organise this training for a whole group or several groups? This can be cost-effective. For example, we can tailor the content entirely to your organisation, and training a whole group is also cheaper.

Are you looking at large numbers of participants or a complete academy? That involves a great deal. Consider planning and communication, for example, or identifying and agreeing the objectives and content of the training. Or differences in level, feedback mechanisms and safeguarding. Fortunately, Learnit has extensive experience in this field (more than 25 years) and we are happy to help you through this process.

Language

The training is given in Dutch as standard. The trainer has a good command of English. English-language course material can be used. With a minimum enrolment of 3 participants, the training can also be given entirely in English.

  • “First of all, I would like to thank the organisation and with it the trainer for this course. I would also like to thank my fellow participants for their openness, their vulnerability and their feedback. This course is very well designed, covering not only the theory but above all the practical side. Personally, I do not like being recorded on video. It is very confronting, but extremely instructive. You are given positive points to work on. Points that really help you to apply for jobs successfully.”

  • “This course is very well suited to gaining insight into your weak points when it comes to job applications. It helps you to get clear for yourself: how do you come across, what are your strengths and points for improvement and how do you present these in a job interview. What is unique about this course is that a very short-lived collaboration is created in which the participants can work on their application techniques in complete honesty and confidentiality. And humour was certainly not forgotten either!”

That way it quickly becomes clear where you fall short. By tackling this point you can reach your goals quickly. I learned a great deal in this 2-day course about the whole job application process and I am now better able to go into an application with a good result.”

Rini Nellissen, GCA - Successful Job Applications
    Rating 8.1
  • “I was looking for options around the new way of job hunting. I have very little experience in applying for jobs (I have always found work through contacts). Thanks to this course (with video) I have a better sense of what I can and should convey, instead of going into an interview nervous and unsure. Confronting at first (with yourself), but after the course you simply are yourself and convey that!”

    M. Admiraal, Aviateur Banketbakkerijen - Successful Job Applications

Frequently asked questions

You will learn how to conduct a job interview in which you radiate calm, present yourself convincingly and answer and ask the right questions. The course works from four pillars: self-knowledge, presentation, persuasiveness and preparation. You practise with real interview situations and receive personal feedback on your posture, use of voice and story.

The course is suitable for anyone who wants to improve their chances on the job market. Think of people starting out on the job market, people applying for jobs again after a long period, or professionals who find that they are often invited for interviews but rarely get the job. If nerves get the better of you during an interview, you are also in the right place here.

No, no prior knowledge is required. It does help if you have a current job application or vacancy in mind, so that you can work on your own situation during the exercises.

Yes, afterwards you receive a Learnit certificate of participation. With it you show that you have taken this course and have worked purposefully on your job application skills.

Yes, the course is also available as an in-company or bespoke programme. We then tailor the content to the specific situation of your group, for example for redeployment candidates or employees in a transition process. Please contact us to discuss the options.

A training day consists of short pieces of theory alternated with exercises and role plays. You hold conversations with the trainer and with the other participants, and receive feedback after each exercise. Because the group is small, there is plenty of room for your own situation and job application goals.

A good first impression is created in the first seconds of a conversation and is determined by your posture, your gaze, your handshake and the way you introduce yourself. It is important to come in calmly, make eye contact and say briefly and clearly who you are. During the course you practise this moment explicitly, so that you notice what works and what you can still sharpen up.

Difficult questions, such as those about weak points, a gap in your CV or a conflict with a previous employer, call for preparation. The essence is: stay honest, keep it brief and link your answer to what you learnt from it or how you now approach things differently. During the course you practise with these kinds of questions and you are given a structure that allows you to answer calmly and convincingly.

Good preparation consists of three layers: the company (mission, products, recent developments), the role (responsibilities and desired competencies) and the person you will be speaking to (their role and background). An HR officer will ask different questions than a head of department. By tailoring your approach to this, you can give more targeted answers and ask sharper questions yourself.

Good questions show that you are interested and are thinking seriously about the role. Consider questions about the make-up of the team, the main challenges in the first few months, the expectations after a year, or the way the company approaches development. Avoid questions whose answers are already on the website. During the course you practise formulating questions that suit you.

A strong story about yourself is short, concrete and geared to the role. Describe in a few sentences what you do, what you are good at and what you are looking for. Back this up with an example from your experience. During the course you work on a personal pitch that you can use in various situations, and you practise it often enough for it to sound natural.

You can find the current price at the top right of this course page, along with the schedule, location and delivery format. For in-company or bespoke courses we are happy to provide a quotation on request.
