With SQL you can retrieve information from an Oracle database at high speed. You learn how to query, filter, combine and edit data, and how to derive well-founded insights from it.
Companies are collecting more and more data, but without the right query language that data remains unused. Oracle is one of the most widely used database systems in the world, and SQL is the language you use to extract information from it. During this course you will learn how to combine the two.
You start with the basic principles: data types, keys and simple SELECT queries in Oracle SQL Developer. You then build on this with filters, sorting, calculations and functions. On day two you get to work with joins, subqueries and modifying data and tables.
The trainer alternates theory with demonstrations and plenty of practical exercises. You work at your own pace and can raise questions from your own practice. That way you leave with a working toolkit.
Day 1: Introduction to SQL and simple queries
Day 2: Advanced queries in Oracle
After this course you will understand how an Oracle database is structured and you will be able to write queries independently to retrieve, filter, combine and edit data. You will know how to merge data from several tables using joins, how to apply subqueries and how to modify tables with INSERT, UPDATE and DELETE. This allows you to turn data into usable information more quickly in your work as an application manager, data analyst, developer or DBA.
This course is intended for anyone starting out with Oracle databases who wants to learn to write queries themselves. Think of application managers, novice Oracle SQL developers, database administrators, BI professionals, data analysts and software developers who want to support their work with SQL.
You work in a small group under the guidance of an experienced database trainer. Theory alternates with demonstrations and plenty of practical exercises in a real Oracle environment. Beforehand you receive a workbook with practice cases, which you can then use as a reference work. The course materials and the software are in English.
No prior knowledge of SQL or Oracle is required. Basic computer experience and logical thinking are enough to follow the course successfully.

Learning theory from a book that you can then hardly use in your work? Not at Learnit! Whichever training you take with us, you can put it to use at your workplace straight away. Because of the unique learning objectives you set together with the trainer at the start of the training. Because of the alternation between theory and (interactive) practical assignments. You learn to write SQL queries independently to retrieve, filter, sort and combine data from Oracle databases. You work with Oracle SQL Developer and practise with SELECT, WHERE, JOIN, GROUP BY, subqueries and modifying data and tables.
The course is intended for novice database users who are going to work with Oracle. Think of application managers, Oracle SQL developers, database administrators, BI professionals, data analysts and software developers.
No, no prior knowledge of SQL or Oracle is required. Basic computer experience and a little logical thinking are enough to follow the course successfully.
Before the course starts you will receive a workbook with exercises and practice cases. You will use this book during the course and afterwards as a reference work. The course material and the software are in English.
Yes, afterwards you will receive a Learnit certificate of participation. This shows that you have completed the SQL Basics for Oracle course.
Yes, you practise in a real Oracle environment using Oracle SQL Developer. This means you write working queries against a live database from day one and see the result immediately.
The basics of SQL (SELECT, WHERE, JOIN, GROUP BY) are virtually the same in all databases. Oracle uses its own dialect, PL/SQL, with specific functions and syntax for dates, strings and subqueries, among other things. In this course you learn to work in that Oracle dialect using Oracle SQL Developer.
A JOIN allows you to combine data from two or more tables on the basis of a shared column. An INNER JOIN returns only those rows that appear in both tables. A LEFT OUTER JOIN retains all rows from the left-hand table, even without a match. A RIGHT OUTER JOIN does the same for the right-hand table. During the course you will practise with all three variants.
A subquery is a query within a query. You use it, for example, to first retrieve a list of values and then use that list as a filter in another query, often with IN. Subqueries help you break complex questions down into logical steps.
WHERE filters individual rows before they are grouped. HAVING filters on the result of a grouping, so after GROUP BY. Want to see only customers with more than ten orders, for example? Then you use COUNT and HAVING, not WHERE.
You can take the course in a classroom setting at one of our locations or in-company at your own organisation. For in-company courses we tailor the content and examples to your own databases and practical situations.
