Want to take your SQL knowledge to the next level? In the SQL Advanced course you work in Microsoft SQL Server with T-SQL, advanced queries, joins, subqueries and programmable objects. Practical, with plenty of exercises under the guidance of an experienced trainer.
Description
In the SQL Advanced course you build on your basic SQL knowledge and go deeper into the possibilities of Microsoft SQL Server and Transact-SQL (T-SQL). You first refresh the basic concepts and then extend your knowledge with advanced ways of sorting, filtering and calculating data.
You then move on to advanced techniques. You work with joins, subqueries, table expressions and combining queries. You also learn how to modify data, manage transactions and use window functions. In addition, you are introduced to procedural programming, logical tests and programmable objects such as procedures and triggers.
Under the guidance of an experienced database trainer, you alternate theory with demos, practical examples and plenty of exercises in Microsoft SQL Server. That way you quickly get to grips with the advanced functions of (T-)SQL and can apply them directly in your own work.

During this course you work in Microsoft SQL Server with the advanced possibilities of (T-)SQL. You first brush up on the basics and then build up your knowledge step by step with topics for advanced users.
Day 1: Refreshing basic SQL concepts
- Retrieving data with SELECT FROM, TOP and DISTINCT
- Sorting with ORDER BY
- Filtering with WHERE, comparison operators and BETWEEN
- Advanced filters: AND, OR, IN, NOT
- Using wildcards with LIKE
- Calculated fields and concatenation
- Editing data with functions such as ROUND, LTRIM, RTRIM and DATEPART
- Summarising with COUNT, SUM, AVG, MAX and MIN
- Grouping with GROUP BY and HAVING
Day 2: Advanced SQL
- Linking multiple tables with joins (INNER, LEFT OUTER, RIGHT OUTER, composite and non-equi)
- Working with subqueries, including running aggregates
- Table expressions: derived tables, aliases, variables and WITH
- Combining queries with UNION, INTERSECT and EXCEPT
- Window functions: OVER, PARTITION, LAG, LEAD and pivoting
- Modifying data with INSERT, UPDATE, DELETE, MERGE and OUTPUT, plus export to Excel
- Transactions and concurrent use: BEGIN, ROLLBACK, COMMIT, READ UNCOMMITTED and READ COMMITTED
- The difference between procedural and object-oriented programming
- Programmable objects and logical tests: variables, batches, IF, ELSE, WHILE, cursors, procedures and triggers

Teaching method
During this course you work in small groups under the guidance of an experienced database trainer. We alternate theory with demos, examples from your own day-to-day practice and plenty of exercises in Microsoft SQL Server. That way you quickly get a proper feel for the advanced features of (T-)SQL.
Before the course you receive a book with exercises and practice cases, which you can also use afterwards as a reference work. Please note that both the software and the course materials are in English.
Prior knowledge
You have a command of the basics of SQL: you can write simple queries independently using SELECT, WHERE and ORDER BY. Have you taken the SQL Basics course or do you already work with it in practice? Then you are in the right place. Experience with MS SQL Server is useful, but not required.

Can I cancel free of charge?
Yes. Up to four weeks before the first day of the course you can cancel free of charge, without giving a reason. You then receive a credit note or, if you have already paid, a refund. If you cancel later, you pay part of the course fee: 25% between four and two weeks before the start, 75% in the two weeks before it and 100% in the final week. Moving to another start date is free of charge up to two weeks before the start, after that 50%. Sending a colleague in your place is always possible. Read the cancellation terms.
