After the SQL Advanced course, can I start working with data analysis in my job straight away, or do I need further training?

After this two-day training course you can independently write complex queries in Microsoft SQL Server: joins across multiple tables, subqueries, window functions (OVER, PARTITION, LAG, LEAD), pivoting and data modifications with INSERT, UPDATE, DELETE and MERGE. For most data analysis tasks in practice, that is sufficient. You extract targeted datasets from a database and export them to Excel for further analysis or reporting. If you then want to build dashboards or carry out statistical analyses, a follow-up Power BI or Python course is the logical next step. SQL supplies the data; those tools turn it into visualisations or predictive models. For database administration or performance tuning on production systems you need additional experience or a DBA programme. The course is taught in a classroom setting in a small group.

Is the SQL Intermediate course also useful if I mainly work with other databases, such as MySQL, PostgreSQL or Oracle?

Largely, yes. The SQL Advanced course uses Microsoft SQL Server and partly covers T-SQL, the Microsoft-specific SQL variant. However, the vast majority of the material is standard ANSI SQL and works almost identically in MySQL, PostgreSQL, Oracle and MariaDB. Think of joins (INNER, LEFT/RIGHT OUTER), subqueries, UNION/INTERSECT/EXCEPT, window functions with OVER and PARTITION, GROUP BY with HAVING, and data modification via INSERT, UPDATE and DELETE. Specific to T-SQL are, among others, the MERGE syntax, certain procedural constructs (IF, WHILE, cursors) and triggers. Do you work with PostgreSQL or MySQL yourself? Then the concepts are directly applicable, but you will occasionally need to look up a function name or syntax detail. For pure Oracle PL/SQL or platform-specific tuning, a specialist follow-up course makes more sense.

You then move on to advanced techniques. You work with joins, subqueries, table expressions and combining queries. You also learn how to modify data, manage transactions and use window functions. Under the guidance of an experienced database trainer, you alternate theory with demos, practical examples and plenty of exercises in Microsoft SQL Server. That way you quickly get to grips with the advanced functions of (T-)SQL and can apply them directly in your own work.
