Insecurity is part of life, but too little self-confidence holds you back. In this course you work on a realistic self-image, gain insight into your qualities and pitfalls, and learn to communicate more consciously. That is how you break old patterns and achieve your goals.

Description

Uncertainty is part of life, but if a lack of self-confidence holds you back, you can end up in a downward spiral. You avoid challenges, set your goals lower and your self-image deteriorates further. In this course you work on breaking those patterns.

You learn to recognise the causes of a lack of self-confidence and gain insight into the role of verbal and non-verbal communication in your self-image. You work with realistic role plays from your own practice, in which mutual feedback helps you to let go of old behavioural patterns. You are given tools such as the RET method, the 4G's and core quadrants, and you practise breathing and relaxation exercises to deal better with tension.

By gaining more insight into the underlying causes of your behaviour, you learn to distinguish more consciously between what brings you closer to your goals and what keeps you away from them.

Topics

  • What is self-confidence? And what is assertiveness? You learn the difference between subassertive, assertive and aggressive behaviour. How do you stand up for yourself in a pleasant way?
  • Working on a realistic self-image: what is your background and what do you want to achieve? You will start working on setting realistic goals.
  • Your own qualities and capabilities: success experiences and core quadrants. You gain insight into your pitfalls and trace them back to the quality behind them.
  • The importance of verbal and non-verbal communication in relation to your self-image: behaviour prompts behaviour. By consciously choosing the attitude you adopt, you use your behaviour more purposefully to achieve your goals.
  • Creating and maintaining a positive mental attitude: rational thinking using RET and the 4 G's.
  • Recognising and acknowledging the causes of a loss of self-confidence through self-reflection.
  • Breathing and relaxation exercises to deal physically with tension and uncertainty.
  • Dealing with negativity and criticism: giving and receiving feedback.

Result

After this course you will have a better understanding of where your insecurity comes from and you will recognise the patterns that undermine your self-confidence. You will know which qualities and pitfalls you have, and how to use them to achieve your goals.

You distinguish between sub-assertive, assertive and aggressive behaviour, and consciously choose the attitude that suits the situation. With your verbal and non-verbal communication you steer other people's reactions, while breathing and relaxation techniques help you stay calm under pressure.

You will also deal differently with criticism and negativity: you will receive feedback without belittling yourself and give it back in a constructive way. Through rational thinking with RET and the 4Gs, you will maintain a positive mental attitude, even when things go against you.

Target audience

This course is intended for anyone who regularly feels insecure and wants to change that. Perhaps you recognise yourself in this:

You feel there is more to be gained from yourself or your environment, you doubt your abilities or qualities and want to increase your self-confidence, you want to stand your ground more firmly when communicating with others.

This list is of course not exhaustive, because everyone is different. What would you like to work on when it comes to self-confidence?

Teaching method

The course alternates between concrete experience, experimenting with behaviour and techniques, reflection and exploring theory. This makes the programme a good fit for every type of participant. There is plenty of action in the course, so that you actually experience the effect of new behaviour. That way you recognise your own success and can build on it.

We emphasise that everyone is responsible for their own development and takes ownership of it. You are invited to reflect continuously and to make connections with your day-to-day practice. The aim is to increase your insight and to let you make the translation to practice yourself. That increases the chance of genuine behavioural change.

Prior knowledge

No specific prior knowledge is required for this course. It does help if you are open to self-reflection and willing to practise new behaviour. Your own experiences and situations from practice form the basis for the work you do.

In-company

Would you like to organise this training for a whole group or several groups? This can be cost-effective. For example, we can tailor the content entirely to your organisation, and training a whole group is also cheaper.

Are you looking at large numbers of participants or a complete academy? That involves a great deal. Consider planning and communication, for example, or identifying and agreeing the objectives and content of the training. Or differences in level, feedback mechanisms and safeguarding. Fortunately, Learnit has extensive experience in this field (more than 25 years) and we are happy to help you through this process.

    Frequently asked questions

The Self-Confidence course is suitable for anyone who feels insecure and wants to get more out of themselves. You may recognise yourself in doubts about your abilities, the feeling that there is more in you, or the wish to communicate with others more confidently. No prior education is required. The classroom course works with small groups, so there is room for your personal learning objectives.

During the Self-confidence course you work on behavioural change with realistic role plays and mutual feedback. You alternate between concrete experience, experimenting with new behaviour, reflection and theory. Methods such as core quadrants, RET and the 4G's help you break through old patterns. Breathing and relaxation exercises are also covered, so that you learn to deal with tension physically.

During the Self-Confidence course you work on themes such as the difference between sub-assertiveness, assertiveness and aggressiveness, building a realistic self-image, core quadrants and pitfalls, verbal and non-verbal communication, rational thinking through RET and the 4Gs, breathing and relaxation exercises and dealing with criticism. You practise with realistic role plays and receive feedback to help you break patterns.

Yes, on completion of the Self-Confidence course you will receive a certificate of participation from Learnit. This certificate confirms that you took an active part in both course days, including the role plays and feedback exercises. The certificate is a useful addition to your CV and shows that you invest in your personal development and communication skills.

Yes, the Self-Confidence course can also be taken in-company. The programme is then tailored to the learning objectives, practical experience and prior knowledge of your team. Individual intake interviews take place beforehand to sharpen the content. The classroom course lasts 2 days for scheduled courses; for in-company rates you will receive a tailored quotation.

There is overlap, but the emphasis differs. An assertiveness course focuses primarily on behaviour: how to stand up for yourself, how to say no, how to set boundaries. Learnit's Self-Confidence course goes a step deeper and works on the self-image underlying that behaviour. You examine the causes of a lack of self-confidence, work with core quadrants on your qualities and pitfalls, and use RET and the 4G model to develop a positive mental attitude. Assertiveness is covered as well, including the distinction between sub-assertive, assertive and aggressive behaviour. The course lasts 2 days and is taught in the classroom. Choose this course if you not only want to show different behaviour, but also want to build a firmer foundation beneath that behaviour.

The Self-Confidence course suits you if you notice that uncertainty is holding you back in everyday situations: not daring to speak up in meetings, difficulty setting boundaries, or the feeling that you are getting less out of yourself than you could. You work on insight and behaviour using role plays, core quadrants and RET (Rational Effectiveness Training). Choose something else if you want to train a specific skill such as presenting or negotiating. In that case, those more targeted courses are more effective. If you are dealing with deeper psychological problems such as anxiety disorders or burnout, guidance from a psychologist is more appropriate. Not sure? During the intake beforehand we look together at whether your learning objectives match.

A self-help book or online video gives you theory and insights, but you do not actually practise with your own behaviour. In Learnit's classroom-based Self-Confidence course you work with realistic role plays drawn from your own day-to-day practice and receive direct feedback from the trainer and fellow participants. This makes old patterns visible and open to discussion. Among other things, you work with core quadrants, RET (Rational Effectiveness Training) and the 4 G's. Breathing and relaxation exercises are also covered. If you opt for a book or e-learning, it remains a matter of knowledge. If you opt for this classroom-based course, you experience the effect of new behaviour directly in a small group. That demonstrably increases the chance of real behavioural change.

The role plays are based on realistic situations from practice that you bring in yourself: a conversation with your manager, giving feedback to a colleague, or standing up for yourself in a meeting. The trainer and fellow participants play the other parties. Afterwards you receive targeted feedback and discuss together what went well and what could be better. That may sound confronting, but it is precisely what makes it effective: you become aware of your own attitude, facial expression and use of voice, and you recognise patterns you would otherwise miss. The group is small, which keeps the atmosphere safe. You practise in several situations, so you can repeat and adjust new behaviour. Compared with theory alone or an online module, this is the difference between reading about swimming and actually getting into the water.

The Self-Confidence course is a classroom-based group course in which you work on your self-image, assertiveness and communication together with other participants. A one-to-one coaching programme often runs for weeks or months and focuses entirely on your personal situation. The main difference lies in the group dynamic: in the course you practise role plays with other participants and receive mutual feedback on how you come across. That gives you a sense of recognition you miss in a one-to-one setting. On the other hand, a coach can go into personal themes in more depth. If you want concrete tools in a short space of time, practice with realistic situations and feedback from several people, the course is a good fit. If you are looking for long-term individual guidance, coaching makes more sense. The two approaches also combine well.

In the Self-Confidence course we work with a number of proven methods from psychology and communication studies. The main ones are: - RET (Rational Effectiveness Training) and the four Gs (Gebeurtenis, Gedachte, Gevoel, Gedrag – event, thought, feeling, behaviour): with these you learn to recognise irrational beliefs and turn them into realistic thoughts. - Daniel Ofman's core quadrants: to map out your qualities, pitfalls, allergies and challenges. - The assertiveness model, distinguishing between sub-assertive, assertive and aggressive behaviour. - Breathing and relaxation exercises for regulating physical tension. - Role plays for concrete feedback on behaviour. The combination of cognitive models (RET, core quadrants) and experiential practice (role play) is a deliberate choice: insight alone does not change behaviour, and practising without insight does not stick.
