Do you want to stand up for yourself without steamrolling others? In this course you work on acting with self-assurance, setting boundaries and communicating purposefully. You learn to express your opinion clearly and to present yourself decisively, with mutual respect as the basis.

Description

Assertiveness is about standing up for your own interests without trampling on the interests of others. When you respond assertively, you increase the chance of achieving your goals and you build relationships based on mutual respect.

In this course you work on presenting yourself more confidently and on the way you profile yourself. You gain insight into the difference between assertive, sub-assertive and aggressive behaviour, and you discover how communication and frames of reference influence other people's behaviour. You consider how verbal and non-verbal behaviour works, and you practise saying no, setting boundaries and making your opinion clear.

You also pay attention to giving and receiving feedback, communicating purposefully without manipulating, and recognising limiting thoughts and emotions that hold you back from standing up for yourself. By doing and experiencing in a safe training environment, you translate the theory straight into your own practice.

For teams and organisations. For a team we deliver this course in-company, focused on the situations in which your employees need to be clearer.

Topics

During this course you will cover topics including:

  • What is and what is not assertiveness? You learn the difference between assertive, sub-assertive and aggressive behaviour.
  • Communication and frames of reference: sending, receiving and interpreting. It is not what you do, but how the other person interprets it that determines his or her reaction.
  • Non-verbal and verbal behaviour: you are always communicating, and above all without words.
  • Saying no and setting boundaries: how do you make your boundaries clear and explain your expectations?
  • Giving and receiving feedback: you will work with the rules of feedback and learn to put your feelings into words.
  • Communicating purposefully: how do you influence someone without manipulating them?
  • Dealing with limiting thoughts and emotions: what is holding you back from standing up for your own interests?

Result

After this course you are aware of your own strengths and pitfalls, and you know what effect they have on others. You have a clear sense of where your boundaries lie and you dare to state them.

You use the right communication techniques to make your interests known and achieve your goals. You also know how to present yourself decisively, while maintaining mutual respect.

Target audience

This course is suitable for anyone who wants to come across more assertively. Do you recognise yourself in one or more of the points below?

I find it difficult to achieve my goals at the right moments, I want to stand up better for my own interests, I want to take the initiative, be clear about what I want and profile myself well, I want to ask for attention in conversations and make my opinion clear.

This list is of course not exhaustive: everyone is different. What would you like to focus on within the theme of assertiveness?

It is a short, practical course for use at work.

Teaching method

You work in a small group of no more than eight participants, led by an experienced trainer. Beforehand you have an intake meeting, so that the programme matches your personal learning objectives.

During the course the emphasis is on doing and experiencing. You practise with real-life situations, experiment with new behaviour and receive immediate feedback. The atmosphere is safe and open, so you feel free to try out new skills.

We alternate theory with exercises, role-plays and reflection. This way you translate what you have learned directly into your own working and living situation.

Prior knowledge

You do not need any specific prior knowledge for this course. It does help if you are open to looking at your own behaviour and willing to practise new communication skills. Your own experiences and situations form the starting point.

Comments

This course is suitable for anyone who wants to learn to respond more assertively in work or private situations. Thanks to its personal character and the small group of no more than eight participants, you have plenty of room to work on your own learning objectives.

Who is the Assertiveness: standing up for yourself course suitable for?
The course is suitable for anyone who wants to come across more assertively, stand up for their own interests better or express an opinion more clearly. You might recognise yourself in the following: difficulty setting boundaries, taking the initiative or raising your profile in conversations. No prior knowledge is required. The classroom course is given in groups of no more than eight participants.
What will you learn during the Assertiveness: standing up for yourself course?
During this classroom course you learn the difference between assertiveness, sub-assertiveness and aggressiveness, and how to deal with this in practice. You practise saying no, setting boundaries, giving and receiving feedback, and communicating purposefully without manipulating. You also work on recognising limiting thoughts and on using verbal and non-verbal behaviour.
What is the difference between assertiveness, sub-assertiveness and aggressiveness?
Assertive behaviour means standing up for your own interests while respecting the other person. Sub-assertive behaviour means putting yourself last and not daring to say what you want. Aggressive behaviour means pushing through your own aims at the other person's expense. During the classroom course Assertiveness: standing up for yourself, you learn to recognise the difference and to respond assertively.
Is any prior knowledge required for the Assertiveness: standing up for yourself course?
No, the Assertiveness: Standing Up for Yourself course requires no prior knowledge or previous education. The course is suitable for anyone who wants to communicate more assertively and stand up better for their own interests. An intake takes place beforehand, so the trainer can tailor the programme to your personal learning objectives and situation.
What is the approach of the Assertiveness: standing up for yourself course?
The Assertiveness: Standing Up for Yourself course is taught in a classroom setting in a group of no more than 8 participants. Beforehand there is an intake in which the trainer identifies your personal learning objectives. The programme is determined on that basis. The course has an active set-up: you learn by doing and experiencing in a safe atmosphere.
When should you choose a classroom assertiveness course rather than a self-help book or an online course?
A classroom course works better if you actually want to practise assertive behaviour, not just understand it. A book or online course gives you theory about communication, setting boundaries and feedback, but you read it on your own and miss the mirror that others provide. In the classroom course Assertiveness: Standing Up for Yourself you practise real conversational situations in a group of no more than 8 participants. You receive immediate feedback on your verbal and non-verbal behaviour from the trainer and the other participants. Beforehand there is an intake in which your personal learning objectives are gathered. Choose self-study if you mainly want to acquire knowledge. Choose the classroom course if you find that you know how it should be done, but cannot manage to indicate your boundaries or express your opinion in the moment.
How do I know whether this classroom course really has an effect on my behaviour, or whether it stays at theory?
The effect lies in the working method. This course is active in its set-up: in a group of no more than 8 participants you practise with real situations from your own working or private life. Beforehand there is an intake in which your personal learning objectives are identified, so that the programme is tailored to your situation. You experiment with saying no, setting boundaries, giving feedback and non-verbal signals. All under the guidance of a trainer who gives immediate feedback. Theory such as communication levels, frames of reference and feedback rules is linked to practice. That is the difference with a book or e-learning: you get direct reflection on your behaviour and practise in a safe setting. Whether you keep it up in practice depends on your own repetition afterwards; the course gives you the framework and the first experience.
What is the difference between this assertiveness course and a course in communication skills or giving feedback?
Assertiveness: standing up for yourself focuses specifically on making your own interests, opinion and boundaries known, with respect for the other person. The distinction between sub-assertive, assertive and aggressive behaviour is central, as is working on limiting thoughts and emotions that hold you back. A general communication course more often covers sending, receiving and conversation structures broadly, without that personal focus on setting boundaries and self-presentation. A course on giving feedback deals only with the rules of feedback and raising behaviour for discussion. In assertiveness, feedback and non-verbal communication are parts of a larger whole: learning to act from your own position. Choose this course (classroom-based, maximum of eight participants) if your question concerns daring, boundaries and inner blocks, and not purely conversation technique.
How does a group course in assertiveness compare with a one-to-one coaching programme?
A group course and individual coaching serve different purposes. In the classroom course Assertiveness: standing up for yourself, you practise with a maximum of eight participants. You experiment with saying no, setting boundaries and giving feedback in role plays with other people – exactly the situations in which assertiveness is difficult. You receive immediate feedback from both the trainer and the group, and you recognise yourself in other people's patterns. The costs are. A one-to-one coaching programme is more suitable if you want to work through deeper personal themes, analyse a specific work situation, or if group dynamics are actually a barrier for you. Coaching is generally more expensive per hour and offers fewer practice partners. Many participants combine the two: first the course for the basic skills, then coaching for greater depth if required.
Will I really be more assertive after the course, or will I still need to practise afterwards?
The two training days give you the framework, the techniques and the practice, but changing your behaviour requires repetition in day-to-day work. During the course you actively practise with situations from your own job: saying no, setting boundaries, giving feedback and dealing with limiting thoughts. You leave the course with concrete tools you can apply straight away. Experience shows that the first few weeks after the course are crucial. Those who keep practising deliberately with small situations (turning down a request, voicing an opinion in a meeting) build up new behaviour. Without that application the effect fades, as with any skills course. The classroom format with a maximum of eight participants helps: you receive feedback from the trainer and the group, so you notice more quickly which behaviour works. Expect several months of active practice before responding assertively becomes your new default.
What do you get in this classroom assertiveness course that you do not get from a book or an online course?
The difference lies in practising with real people and receiving direct feedback. The course works with a maximum of eight participants, so you can experiment with new behaviour in a safe setting. You have an intake conversation with the trainer beforehand, so the programme matches your personal learning objectives. During the days you work on non-verbal communication, saying no, giving feedback and dealing with limiting thoughts. Topics on which a book only gives you theory, but no mirror of your own effect on others. A book provides knowledge; this course provides experience and behavioural feedback, including course materials. Choose this if you find that reading alone does not get you moving.
What does the Assertiveness: Standing Up for Yourself course cost and how long does it take?

You can find the current price at the top right of this course page, along with the schedule, location and delivery format. For in-company or bespoke courses we are happy to provide a quotation on request.
